Open Tray error Help/dilemma
« on: April 25, 2011, 12:28:16 AM »
so i just got a 360 that has the open tray error.  it occurs once in awhile. (sometimes it works and plays games and other times it just wants to be a stubborn lil b*tch )

Do you think its the laser dying or just needs a pot calibration?

the one year warranty just expired about 3 months ago (GRRRRR) but is still covered under the 3year warranty (arcade with HDMI w/ lite-on drive, Jasper chipset?  i think).

should i void it and get it to work? whats your thoughts?

First I would try getting a disk cleaner and try that. before i would open it up. See if that works, being that it occurs once in a while , and being the warranty is only been up for 3 months, it probably just needs to be cleaned. Thats the cheapest and easies fix .

2nd If i had to take it apart i would clean the laser with alcohol there are videos on you tube that show you how. just google them or seach you tube.

i would try the simpliest things first before I would  mess with the pots, or replacing the laser or the dvd drive.

Let me know your results hope this helped out.

Sorry meant dvd cleaner disk , its a cd/dvd cleaner that you just put in the dvd drive and cleans the laser . you can just put it in the dvd drive and follow the instructions and will clean the laser lens.

heres one on e-bay, but you can buy them at a local store also,

Your lazer is failing, call microsoft and see if they will do anything, tell them it does this now and again and now it red tringed on you today, twice, then went back to normal, and is doing the disk read error.

if they wont fix it, buy a new drive Matching type, and swap out the lazers, make sure to reuse the motherboards out of the origional disk drive, as its only the lazer which failed.

Just get a disk cleaner, and see if that makes a difference, may solve your problems all together, you will never know till you try it and for $8 to $10 dollars you will have it to  use, its only a year old, I have fixed other ones that guys had the  same problem that were alot older then yours and been using it ever since I have cleaned it.

Smoke dirt and animal hair  etc can get on the laser and cause it do the same thing.

I would try it you have nothing to lose

I had the same problem with a benq hdmi box and I opened the drive and cleaned the rail slides re-greased them with white lith. I had lil bits of hair stuck at the end of the rail that kept the tray from closing all the way and sometimes would give me "open tray error".

for me it seems like a stuck rail than a dirty laser. all i did was stick something in there so that i can move the laser and all is well

OK so it open trayed on me again.  last time i shook it and tried to slide the laser tray a bit and it seemed to do the trick. i suspect dirty rails instead.  im contemplating if i should open it or not.  how reliable are Jasper Arcades? if they dont rrod then i might not care about the warranty and pop that sticker off to fix this laser.  i read somewhere it had something to do with the laser accidentally going to far out when resetting itself and the laser doesnt make contact with the disc causing the 360 to think the tray was empty.

whuthefxk- have you tried contacting MS yet and see what they say. If your still under 3 year and your worried about warranty , see what they can do. If they won't help you. Come back I'll help you fix your tray issue, I went through the same thing. Its not hard to do If you know how to take an xbox apart.

could of , would of ,should of,  had it fixed or called MS right from the begining, yet alone should of been fixed by now.  its only a  little over a year old, probably just a dirty laser . I bought one the other day thatis 4 years old the guy said it dont read disk anymore, brought it home first thing I did was pop the cd/dvd disk cleaner in and now playing games as if there wasnt an issue. not saying that there all that way but could of been solved by now.

and why worried about RROD or E-74 issues? this topic was about open tray issues

for me it seems like a stuck rail than a dirty laser. all i did was stick something in there so that i can move the laser and all is well

If this is the problem then maybe after you call MS and see what they can do for you . IF MS wont repair it or fix it then you need to take it apart and clean it and make sure that everything is working properly,

IF YOUR NOT SURE... whats involved get someone to help you that knows what they are doing or it will turn in to something that isnt usuable.  So many xbox 360's could of been fixed due to someone who opened them and didnt know what they are doing.

Just being safe for you and your 360

i have several 360s laying around.  i fix them myself.

reason im asking all this is cuz i've gotten a 360 like this one awhile back that was having same issues. popped that one open and just cleaned the dog hair out of it and BAM it was good to go. sold it to my room mate. about 10months later he tells me that it rrod.

this one just started occuring right after the 1 year expires ( i called and they told me when it expired). they want that 100 bucks to get it done by MS.   i just wanted to know if these jaspers were reliable or not and if there is any way i can fix it without peeling that sticker off just yet.  i may try the disc cleaner soon if i can pick some up

UPDATE: i managed to slide the laser close enough and used a q-tip w/ 99% rubbing alcohol and tweezers to clean off the laser.  works great now.  hopefully that did the trick as the q-tip picked up some brownish-red residue. (the person i got it off of smoked a ton of prescribed Cali stuff while playing. maybe that was the culprit of the dirty laser?)  thanks for all the help!
