Shotty Job by random Shop

Here is a PS3 that I have as a repair item, This is the condition that it was brought to me... I was unable to take any clients for a few weeks so this long time client went to a guy at a shop in his area and I just wanted to post here to show you how shotty some "professional" work is.

This is also a kinda repair log... it may help others in the future?????

OK, I'm not going to name each picture, This thing went to hell and back...

1) The guy reflowed it with about 5oz of flux.... there was crispy flux everywhere....

2) Whoever it was lost some of the screws and damaged some of the plastic. With the facia on, you dont see the SUPERGLUE as much.... (Yes, you can see it on the facia - pics later)

3) This person DID NOT clean the PS3... It was only 4-5 weeks after my client initially got it repaired by some wacko before he came to me. And this client is a regular so i can gauge his dust levels... His computer comes to me once every 8ish months for a cleaning... (i also found dust IN the thermal paste)

4) With thermal paste, we all know less is more... Except this guy....

5) Artic Silver? - the paste that was used was very oily, almost seemed home made... it was not that tacky to the touch, felt like neosporin with baking soda...

6) EVERY SINGLE SCREW WAS EITHER LOOSE, MISSING, OR STRIPPED... (I removed the clamp bolts with my fingers)

7) My client brought it to this "shop" with a game in the console, When he got it back the game was gone.

It makes me sad to see people waste money... My client was charged $90 for this service. He had texted me to ask me a price, however I was unavailable so he just did it >_<

holly beeep that is the most crappiest job i seen i didn't think a ps3 could get so dusty  i've had mine since septish and when i opened it to paint it there was not a spec of dust  i feel sorry for the guy who had this done

wow, that's messed up, regardless of what job I'm doing the first thing I do is thoroughly clean the unit... the amount of dust in that is a little gross...

yeah, well it is an OLD FAT PS3...

this is why I know that the other guy didnt clean it.

THERE IS NO WAY IT WOULD GET THAT DIRTY THAT FAST...

also the dust was so old that it didnt have a "dust" smell, it was already biodegrading into soil, LOL

yeah, only reason i know is because the chip had been re-flowed... and the system had been glued together, also my client still had all his psn content and crap...

It was just a very sad day when i opened that PS3...

I often get systems that have been "worked" on before, this was a shock to me though as he took it to a place that has an actual storefront and busts things out.

I see why they bust things out... no attention to detail, no "long term" care for their customers.


That is why they have customers, and most people from here have clients..

Customers are there for the purchase... Clients are long term...

how do you manage to get dust in the thermal paste?

just put abit of new on the old and mixed it in instead of cleaning it


this is a very bad stat even my old was after 4 years of play was not this bad

Here are some pics of one I had fixed, this was the one that had a YLOD and then when I got it back together found out the dvd drive board was shot .

This is what causes the YLOD , these consoles are left on all the time and become the air filtration systems for your home when they get this way they over heat because it can no longer cool its self and just becomes a vacuum cleaner.


[Hop] I feel your pain you have been working on this a long time and people ask why do I charge so much to fix the YLOD , I usually charge $65 to $75 us dollars to fix it due to takes me a good hour or more to just clean it up before i can even begin to reflow or fix any other problems along the way that it may need. good cleaning of everything will make the PS3 last much longer and using NO CLEAN FLUX when reflowing the PS3 seems to make them last alot longer.

I give you credit for not giving up on your clients PS3 but sometimes you have to tell them the truth its just too much trouble to fix it.

This reminds me of the only modding shop in winnipeg. The company is called ModChip and they have locations in the states as well as in Canada. And they do such a crappy job that the first time i brought my psp in there was to see if it was modifiable and they told me that id have to upgrade my psp to the newest firmware for it to work. I was on 5.50 OFW when i went in and i left with 6.00 OFW.

(and i smack myself now thinking that i thought they knew what they were doing)

I came back in there two weeks later and asked how much it would cost for a new psp 2000 power switch and they told me $27.99 CAD! I later found the exact same switch on DealExtreme for $1.79 CAD with FREE shipping!

So ever since then i do my own system mods and my friends system mods because i know how highly overpriced those companies are!

They wanted $30.00 CAD for a Pandora's battery. I bought mine from DealExtreme for $2.99 CAD and it works great!

I do my friends mods for 5 or 15 dollars... Exept i only ask that if i dont have the parts that they want to use on the mod, that they pay me for the parts needed.

And seeing that job on that guy's PS3 literally gave me a shell shock moment

looks like he added the new thermal paste without fully cleaning off the old stuff. also looks like he attempted the reflow with the metal bracket still on. Sad
