Apple preventing iPhone from filming live events.
« on: June 16, 2011, 04:59:33 PM »
Have you ever been to a concert or a show and thought "Im going to film this with my phone so i can show my friends"? Well Apple has, and have decided to create a program that will be imbedded into the iPhone's operating system to stop you from doing just that.

How the software would work:

If a person were to hold up their iPhone, the device would trigger the attention of infra-red sensors installed at the venue. These sensors would then instruct the iPhone to disable its camera. So no matter how hard you tried you would not be able to film the concert.
Other features, such as the phone’s ability to make a call or send text messages, would not be affected.

I personally think this to be a great idea to implement into a concert, because i for one hate when I'm trying to watch a show that i paid good money to go see. And the guy in front of me decides to hold up his cell phone and start filming the show, blocking my view.

Although i think that it would be better if the same program could be used in movie theaters to turn peoples cell phones off while the movie is playing. Because again who likes to hear some persons ringtone in the middle of an awesome action scene or dramatic climax?

So this is one of the few things that Apple has decided to make that actually seems helpful in some way.

What do you the reader think?

the DIY way... add a IR filter to your phone camera. (block all IR light) lol

the legal way.. move to android. lol

why is apple doing this? prob they will be paid by these venues. but i can see how this gan get to a hackers hands for potentials pownage. lol

just go to a convert with a IR reciver, a PIC or AVR. record the signal. then just repeat the process in movie theaters or anywere.

... this is basicly like a tv-bgone, but in software and without our consent.

Your flaw in this statement is it would be in a new iPhone update in which you would have to agree to the terms and conditions before you can update.

So yes you would be giving your consent  :yess:

Anyone else reminded of the human cent-ipad episode of south park after reading this?

That is probably what they had in mind when they got the idea in the first place.

Think about it. It would be an APPLE technology, and would be THEIR patented product!
It would be a mulit million dollar profit for them. (just like bluetooth was for the makers of bluetooth)

amateur live footage always looks like crap, and sounds like crap, why would they bother trying to stop people? its not like they are going to make a dvd quality film with their crappy iphone.

LOL this could be used for some cool hacks! like a jacket that emits the right signal, completely removes the need to hide when you don't want to have your photo taken, instead just sit and laugh at your less techy friends while they try and work out why their phone won't work ;)

Like i said Sammy the signal would have to be set up at the place where the party was being held. And im assuming it would be expensive so it would probably be only used for large events such as a concert or in a movie theater and the like.

amateur live footage always looks like crap, and sounds like crap, why would they bother trying to stop people? its not like they are going to make a dvd quality film with their crappy iphone.

That is true as of this day, but technology is always advancing. And who knows? Maybe one day the iPhone will have a 11 megapixel camera that takes great pictures AND video's! lol

But my guess is that Apple is thinking ahead of themselves and are creating the technology before it's created by someone else... So maybe their planning on upgrading the camera on the iPhone 5 to something decent?

But its an idea to play with... Like maybe one day it will be mandatory for all new camera's to have this infared signal protocol installed.

actualy it would be a ir light that will pulse a code.  just like a remote and your tv. then the iphone ir sensor or camera can pick up this signal. if it determines its a "turn off camera mode" signal then it will not work.

@hyper999 try to build a tv b-gone! lol some people in makezine put this into a jacket and when you sip up the jackets zipper all tvs turn off. you will have fun man! lol or a hat with ir led and just make your fiends take a pic of you. they will look fullish for not being able to work a iphone camera! hahahahaha
