Ok so for my product design class I'm making a portable modding/electronics workbench. I need to conduct some research, so I ask you members of AM;

1. What tools can you not live without?

2. Where do you do you modding/ electronics work?

3. How many plug sockets do you have? how many would you like? and how far away is the nearest socket to your work area? (ie. how long would the power cable need to be)

4. How do you hold the item you are working on? helping hands? vice? other method? (explain) and what would be your ideal solution?

5. Roughly how big is your work area? Would you like a bigger work area? (@rodent surface not the room :P)

6. Also if you wouldn't mind me using it in my folder work could I have an anonymous photo of your work area?

Please answer as much as you can in as much detail as you can

I found a eletrical plug strip which has 12 outlets in them and works good For about 20 bucks at a Big Lots store . could always add a surge protector.

4. How do you hold the item you are working on? helping hands? vice? other method? (explain) and what would be your ideal solution?
Helping Hands or Vise depending on what I am working On C-clamps , vise grips, contractor clamps they all work good.

5. Roughly how big is your work area? Would you like a bigger work area? Garage is a! 1/2 car garage 12 x 19 feet, bedroom is 10 x 12 feet

6. Also if you wouldn't mind me using it in my folder work could I have an anonymous photo of your work area?
Wouldnt mind but would have to get pics and what a mess everything is right now, will try to get you something

Read thru you can see my answers ....lol hope this helps out. I also bought a small 15 inch tv and hooked up a adaptor for av cables and hdmi cables more like a splice so i can have them for more then one game system and never have to change out cords just the systems for xbox, xbox 360 , ps3, wii etc.

4. How do you hold the item you are working on? helping hands? vice? other method? (explain) and what would be your ideal solution? my own hand when ever im dremeling or painting i usually were gloves to not get paint on my hand

1.Multimeter, Comp, Screwdriver, soldering iron, and to a leser extent breadboard

2.In my room, but it has its own area, none of my electronics mess goes elsewhere in my room

3.It's a small Room so 2, but i have 2, 4-Plug extension leads

4. Tape, but if i had helping hands then i would use them (Something with a solid base, and flex arms so they wouldnt get in my way)

5.120x60, i would like a longer bench, so my laptop and electronics dont get mixed up, the amount of resistors i have found in my keys

6.On it now, lemme tidy it a little ( I made a vid, actualy pics when i find a good cam)

2. Where do you do you modding/ electronics work? The corner of my apartment living room

3. How many plug sockets do you have? how many would you like? and how far away is the nearest socket to your work area? (ie. how long would the power cable need to be) Right now i have 12 sockets... two power strips hooked into different sockets on both sides of my worktable for easy access about 1 meter away. I would like as many sockets as i can get.

4. How do you hold the item you are working on? helping hands? vice? other method? (explain) and what would be your ideal solution? vice, c-clamp, a modded version of helping hands that uses 10-awg romex for bending and twisting to my desire. (depends on what it is i need to work on). The ideal setup would be if i could make things float and it stays there so i don't have to fiddle around with a stupid clip.

5. Roughly how big is your work area? Would you like a bigger work area? (@rodent surface not the room :P) my Worktable is exactly 4ft by 8ft, its 3.5ft highwork area i use is about 12ft x 6ft (about half of my living room haha). Obviously i want a bigger work area who doesn't? ... the size of a warehouse would be perfect so i can have all the equipment/parts i could ever want.

6. Also if you wouldn't mind me using it in my folder work could I have an anonymous photo of your work area? PM sent

1. What tools can you not live without?

Measurement tools:
Digital multimeter, Oscilloscope. (I'd like to get a signal analyzer but they're pretty expensive).

Power supplies:
AC transformers in voltage outputs from 12 to 700VAC, DC power supply.

Hand Tools:
Basic screwdrivers, torx set, allen set in mm and inches, cutter, pliers, vise-grip, tweezers, knife.

Power tools:
Small 12V drill for PCB, 4 pound hammer drill for metal and concrete, grinder.

Solder tools:
20W-40W solder pen, 200-250W solder pistol for heavy work, stand and sponge, tin and solder paste.

Misc things you can't miss:
Masking tape(x tagging wires), electronics tape, rivets and riveter, hand saw, hammer, zip ties, super glue, epoxy, breadboard, sand paper, metal files, thread makers.

My workshop (a room).

I have 12 sockets, and sometimes I need more.

I'd like to have individual on/off switches for every set of 2 sockets, maybe a lit switch if possible.

In the room sockets are pretty close, but I have a 10 meter 3x14 AWG TSJ extension cord just in case.

A vice and a third hand.

The size of the table is 2 meters by 1 meter, the only thing I have on it is a 12 inch laptop, the rest of the area is clean ( most of the time is filled with electronics stuff in different stages of the repair process ).

Well I probably missed a few things.

I might take pictures of my work room, I happen to do a lot of things, Industrial electronics design, manufacture, repair, maintenance, installation, sales, all brands of PLC programming, microcontroller programming, computer programming, in all languages from assembler to C to visual basic to microsoft office, web design, embedded networked systems design.

I have a toolbox where I keep all my hand tools for when I have to work outside the shop, I also keep the laptop bag ready with all PLC cables ready for work outside.

The first station is my dismantle station. This table is a drafting table. One of the things I do as an artist. Anything that needs to be taken apart gets broken down here. Reassembly sometimes happens here also.

this one is a box of parts I am currently using.

The next station is for small ventilated projects. I have a small fan exhausting the air. I use this to make the molds . When my wife is on the computer I use this area to tinker just so we can conversate while she messes around on FB.

This one is my main station. All soldering and modding pretty much happens here. I took some of the tools out and placed them on the table.

Next is my to-do and done area.

Last is my molding area on the porch. The table was a huge dual processor pc case.

I will come back and edit my description to talk about needed tools.

LOL I bet you do toad know what that stuffs for.....lol :#1:Just kidding, with you, any how the vaseline, makes like a mold release, and probably the easiest thing for denal to use for a mold release no harmful smell and easy clean up

I have an idea, you should put in a shelf for something with separate slots where you can place your electronic components so that they are organized and easy to find.

hyper i got a idea from when i was in shop bout 8 months ago and came up0 with a bench idea i dont kinow if i still have the orginal googloe sketch up files but it was bascialy a shop table with a bunch of ciircles in the table but it was mesh with the table it self so u wouldn't know it was there and all u would have to do is use ur fingers to poke in to the holes provided and then u could lift the back panel up and there would be a bunch of shelfs underneath that

in place when the top was folded
