PS3 problem
« on: July 21, 2011, 09:31:36 PM »
So I moved out of my apartment after graduating and one of my roommates had a broken PS3 so he just gave it to me.  Score  .

So the problem.  The PS starts and will run normally but once you put in a blu ray it will start to play but then the PS3 will freeze at some point.  I feel like this problem could be fixed by replacing the laser.  Do I have the right idea? From what I know if the PS3 cant read the disc then its the drive but if it can recognize the disc then its the laser.

I hope this is something I can fix that easy I would be stoked.  what are your guys thoughts on this issue?

EDIT: this is the original 80gb PS3 not the slim if that makes a difference

Awsome SCORE , first off you will probably need to replace the laser, but what i would try first before taking it apart is get a Playstation laser lens cleaner by CLEAN Drx. then if that doesnt work then you need to take it apart and  find out what laser you need . for under $75 US dollars between the disk and laser you will have a awsome deal and a working PS3 .

Can get the laser here at this website. http://www.thegamersfix.com/home.php

Good luck and keep us informed. hope this helps you out. :hifive:

Awesome thanks I will look into that laser cleaner and hopefully they sell it local, Frys should carry it they got everything electronic.Ill also have to look at the AMshop, I'd rather buy from here for sure over amazon and what not since I dunno the intelligence of the seller.  Then all i need i to get a controller (bastard took it with his other ps3 >.> lol)  and its game on.

Thanks for the responses and tips, time to see if I can fix this haha.

but do you guys really think it is worth fixing it?
the laser will cost around 75$ and then the ps3 is also a 80Gig so it will YLOD soon and then reflowing will also require a heatgun and thermal paste and that too will be temporary.

EDIT SORRY : thought you said controller board for dvd drive, let me know when you got it together and up and running ;)

Personally he has  to take it apart so he would I am sure clean it out from any debree or dust, the Reason the PS3 get the YLOD is do to  lack of respect to the maching , leaving it on all the time when  its not in use playing dvds and leaving them run. they suck in so much dirt that it can no longer cool or keep it cool to keep it from overheating. this causes the YLOD . Long gameing hours also. so if  it were me yes i would spend the 50 or 60 bucks to fix it.

Pretty sure controller and controller board are two separate things. My mind first goes to the controller used to play the game, which could easily be used with another PS3, before thinking of an internal component that wouldn't even be usable on another PS3 anyway. All those "pretty" projects got you over thinking things Rodent ;).

actually is its hackable sitting on 3.55 firmware or lower you actually wouldn't need to fix the bluray drive just flash the no-bluray needed custom firmware to the ps3 and load all your games off the internal harddrive and spend the $75 for the laser on a controller and you got a sweet ps3 lol

no it will not play online, and if he updates after installing no brcfw he will brick his console.
Note : not all games will load w no brfw. Also it depends on what the problem w the laser is. If his laser is dead he's fine. If the br controller is dead he cant load pkg's. which means he's stuck with cfw and cant play anything.

I think he ment with the 3.55 firmware jailbreak...but  i could be wrong. I think krazy-one didnt either read the whole thread cuz we got talking about something else before he posted this.

I could be wrong thou.

Some one above brought up nobrcfw and thats only a band-aid. Until he fixes his br he has to run no brcfw, meaning no 3.56+.
I have done 2 nobrcfw's and they work good. But like i said, no online and some games wont play. Certain games will require a disc in the drive. Correction, no psn , you can still go online.

Ok so I went and got the Clean Drx and gave that a try and it does not seem to have fixed the problem.  I am able to run DVDs just fine and I can start to play blu-rays but they freeze early in.  Rockband 2 (game that came with it and only one so far) will load to the menu and i can maneuver through that just fine but once I start a song it freezes, though it still registers my button clicks and I can see the "strings" light up.  So with that I feel that the decoding is going on just fine and its just the laser farking up when on the blu-ray discs.  I would rather not hack this considering I DO intend on playing online with my buddy who gave it to me.

The main use of this is for light game play and occasional movies and netflix (when I'm not using the 360 so game time is already split there) so it wont be left on for more then a few ours at a time not even every day and this house is not dusty at all unlike my old apartment.  And yes I do feel that a $75 fix is worth it, I am not a fan of the new slims for my own reasons and this model is the 2nd best when it comes to the features (there is another post that shows the differences).

I would love to spend the money on a controller and another game but getting this working is the main priority since blu-rays can be watched while i wait to get those.

I appreciate all the comments, advice, and ideas (even if I don't go that route) and hopefully I can get this working.  If I do have to replace the laser I will make sure to document it and post it.

Ok so I did a test tear down of the PS3, which I swear took me ~5min, all the way to the blu-ray laser assembly.  The assembly is the KEM-400AAA according to the sticker on the drive.  Unfortunately the AMshop is showing it as -1 (back ordered I assume).  It didnt look much more difficult to just replace the laser itself.  Is there a place to see which laser it takes? the AMshop has the KES-400A but only show 1 or so in stock.  I just need to now if the inventory is just out dated or if the assembly is really out of stock but that laser will work, the extra work is minimal so either is a viable option for me.

Thanks

If its a KEM-400AAA that  is the one you need to replace it with. If our AM shop doesnt have it, then I am not sure  why that is. go to the website i gave you . if you need one they will have it in stock. Not promoting them over AM but if you want it fixed you gotta go where the parts are  ...lol good luck thanks for keeping us up to date.

Sounds good, maybe I will contact the AMshop first (would like to support them if I can) and see what the deal is.  Then if I cant get it through them then I will get it from that other site.  I wont be able to get to buying the part until later in the week but when I do get it in I will post the progress of the repair (probably in video form).

Hopefully this will fix my problem and i can own and play the PS3 BF:BC2 copy also >.> haha (buddy wants me to get it for PS3 also, already got the 360 one >.>)

Thank you for the help and advice, I will still keep up on this topic but watch out for a repair thread (would do it on this one but I want it to be clean and at the top of the topic).  Plus if its clear and complete enough maybe it can get saved =p.
