My ROL mod
« on: July 28, 2011, 11:34:06 AM »
Hello everyone. I have been inactive on here for a long while now, but ive just recently gotten back to modding. This is my first attempt at a ring of light mod on my psp, and i think it has turned out pretty well.

This is what the ring started out as:

Then it looked like this:

Anyway, here is what the wiring looks like on the inside:

And here is where I hid the button to control the functions, inside the memory stick door:

I used 2 red, 2 blue, and 2 green 3mm leds. I was originally going to use 2 smd rgb leds, but they were just too hard for me to solder with my crappy iron.

Here is the Finished product:

It has seven different colors, and one alternating mode. This psp also has blue sound reactive leds in the triggers, but Ill have to reconnect those in the next couple days. Please let me know that you think.

@arjohn: I didnt actually need to buy anything for this project. The LEDs were from other devices and whatnot that I had laying around. I     did however have to shave them down a lot to get them to sit flush in the umd area.

@rafaliyo86: I have removed my UMD drive because I have recently gotten custom firmware, and I dont have a need for it anymore. However, you dont need to remove it to do this mod. Also, the pcb came from one of those cheap color changing pens or similar device.

@rceckspurt13

that mod is sick. I've always loved rgb effects

my suggestion would be to remove that metal ring... it would look so much better, much more flare, and you could see the colors mix better as well.

@nEoVaLoR: I actually thought about that, but I wanted to try to retain the stock look of the PSP, while still adding a little style to it, thats why i kept the ring.

@arjohn: I got mine from a light up pen, such as these:

Im sure you have seen them before. I just desoldered everything from the little board, then re-attached two LEDs of each color, rather than the one that is on there.

@loboplayero: Im glad you like the idea. Just a tip though, make sure to place a small resistor on the +5v source; this will protect the pcb from over-voltage since it usually only runs on +4.5v. I skipped that part, and it works fine, although it gets pretty hot if I leave it on for extended periods of time. Also, the leds actually go all the way through the black umd door and into the clear ring so the ring is clear to allow the light to sperad out away from the LEDs.

A fellow member emailed me with a request for a wiring diagram, so here it is:

I apologize for the quality. It uploaded in .jpg rather than .bmp.
