« on: January 14, 2012, 08:06:29 AM »
Project: I am going to be making an N64 portable. I've been waiting on parts for a while, but it's time to get modding!
Console: This is my plain n64 motherboard.

Got a lot of work done today. I cut off all of the ports as I won't be needing them. I relocated the game cartridge and wired up the batteries.

It works!!!

I've done a few things recently. I've redone the cartridge port wires as they were to long, so i made all 48 of them shorter so that it takes up less space. I also wired directly to the screen instead of using the cables. I also made the battery charger. I used the port and cable from the screen for the charger. I'm going to be using a vacuum forming table for the case. I will be working on building the table most likely this weekend.

The batteries should last about 2-3 hours. I'm going to be building a vacuum forming table. This is similar to an air hockey table. Basically, you put your mold of the case on top of the tiny table, then you place a melted sheet of plastic and the vacuum suction will make the plastic shape to the mold. It is very cool.

Finished my vacuum forming table. Took two weekends to build. Looks pretty good. I also wired an audio amp to the console and I got sound! Just waiting on some plastic and then I can start building my case!

I gave my vacuum forming table a go today, and it was pretty much a failure. Many things went wrong.

This was my first try. You need to have a frame around the plastic to secure it and what not. I had a bad design for my frame and the plastic came out of the frame and it was wasted.

This was my second attempt, I perfected my frame by using a few screws and bolt, The plastic stayed inside of it, but when the plastic melted, it drooped down and get stuck to the tray I had it on. I had to use a spatula to pry the plastic off. Another sheet wasted.

This was my third try. I sprayed olive oil on the tray so that way, when it drooped down, it wouldn't get stuck. My trick worked but another problem arrived. I used thicker plastic than what is recommended, and because of that, the small suction couldn't move the thick plastic as much as I wanted it to. I plan on ordering some thinner plastic and I hope it will fix this problem. Each try got better and better, so I have hopes that I will get this process perfect!

I perfected my vacuum forming process and I made a nice looking case, well that is after about 10 layers of bondo. lol. Well anyways, it's about ready for its first layer of paint. If I follow my schedule, I should finish this project with only a few days to spare. It's kind of scary working all the way to the end. hope I finish on time!

I have an inner lip on the back of the case that I will screw a flat piece of plastic onto.

Got a lot of work done this weekend. Most of all the buttons are drilled and now I'm just touching up the case with some bondo to get it perfect before I paint it tomorrow.

Take your time when painting, make sure your area is clean, Primer, then wet sand, get all the little imperfections, out if needed, with primer you can spray it kind of heavy, will fill in any voids, then just make sure you apply  light coats of paint on your 1st or 2nd coat, then wet sand it, your 3rd and final coat should be able to put on a little heavier, being it will have a good bond now to the primer, then you wet sand it and then clear it.. Takes a little bit of patience...but well worth it when your all done.

Really awesome job you did on this.. winner by a long shot , Reason I believe that , its a Retro console, different then we have seen in a while , and something other then xbox 360 or PS3 or PSP mods...

Good Luck coming along really great..

Thanks Rodent! It means a lot coming from you since your work always turns out good! Just finished putting on the first coat of primer. It revealed a few imperfections but I'll fix everything once it dries.

Painted it purple by popular/personal vote. There's a big drip on the side, but i'll sand that off as soon as it dries more. Before I painted it, I drilled the last of my holes, which are the shoulder buttons and the z button. I was going to mount the actual buttons from the controller, but my dremel bit I use broke. I don't have enough time to get a new one so I drilled holes for tact switches. Not the same but you'll never really look at them since there on the sides.
