entry #7355
« on: January 14, 2012, 11:08:57 AM »

AKA: wireless PS3 portable.

Description:
PSP GO connected to a HD 13 wide screen 12V LCD. PSP might be docked I might just internalize, not sure yet. I will mod controls from left over parts to the modded lcd faceplate. These controls will be connected to a real dual shock 3 controller. I will make a psp style jewel mod for the front displaying the PSP3 logo. I will use the back side of the lcd as a glow light to back light something on the back. This will be battery powered and totally portable.
I have since figured out how to play some PS3 games on the psp and have true dual shock through bluetooth on the psp go. For now no hdmi wireless transmitter will be used. I might add one in the future . All PS3 control and video will be handled ny the PSP go and a DUAL SHOCK 3 controller. The controller will not be used as a PS3 controller but could be if needed.

In the beginning:

YEAH it works!

I had to use my clear psp 2000 for the mobo as the ol vader video out on mobo was not working. I will swap vader mobo into clear shell after mod off.

So some build pics and a lil description of the mod. First up was desoldering the wires from charge port. Then I used that connection from mobo directly to 5 v and ground source on lcd control board. get everything up and running and test. TADA it worked. Then came a lil layout planing. Controls testing will be next on list.

Can someone tell me if this counts as a console mod? I am assuming so , but if anyone has any objections its fine.

So First up for todays update 1/19 : I found HDMI PSP upscaler. MMMM.

I will be putting in a umd jewel w ring on the front where the craig logo is.

Next up is lay out mock up with a preview of some of the goodies being installed with the psp.

This is a shot of the lcd controls and the home/4way button. Might use to control sel/start/rf right rf left. Also look for mode lights here. Ie : PSP mode led/PS3 mode LED/ RF LED's. I might still use player led but have different colors for ps3 and psp.

I put the hdd in for future mod. If testing works out when I have the money, look for hdd for psp. For now I will be using CR-3100 DUAL SD cards. 24GB atm. 8+16. Find my 32 and I will have 48gb. Not a bad place to start. But I want all my psp games and videos right there at my finger tips. So when I can afford it I will buy the microsd card adapter to usb and test psp hdd theory . If that works I will improve upon that again buy trying that w the cr3100 and see if I can raid 2 usb drives together. oohh boy.

This last pic: I will be putting a switch on the data + line to see if I can switch from cr3100 to mspd . I remeber someone doing something like this on here and I will try to find the info on it but if I cant I might not put that feature in for now. either way it will attach right here.

The case mod started... I gotta say its off to a good start. It feels good in your hands. I know this thing looks huge but really w/o battery its lighter than my fat boy PSP.
Right hand controls

Left hand controls

UPDATE: 1/22

Afternoon update: controls put into place. Had to cut up the control board. The buttons i am using do not have resistance on them. They are not pressure sensitive. I will be lighting these buttons on press. I might do 1 color for constant and another for press.

Side note we need psp touch so I can make this into a tablet. ANDROID OS on psp would be sweet.

If you are looking for a good, light weight battery, why not get a 4 cell lipo battery with 14v and get a regulator.  The ones used in RC airplanes can be very useful and lightweight.  If you get 3-4 of them (considering you have space and money) you can wire them in parallel and get a good battery life on it.  Try searching this website: www.hobbyking.com  They have some good batteries there. Search for something with the keywords "4S", "25C", or "30C" if you are going to get only one battery.  The 4S is the amount of cells in the pack.  You get about 3.7v for each cell in a pack.  The 25C is a term of the measurement of amps it can output constantly.  Some of them may be marked as something like "25C~50C", which means 25C at constant draw and spikes of up to 50C draw.
If you get 3 4S packs and wire them parallel, you can get them all in the 25C range.  If you are looking at only one for the whole system, go with the 30C battery.  A 40C may even be better if that system uses a large amount of electricity.  It just depends on the power draw.  And with the regulator, make sure you get a heatsink for it and make sure it can handle high loads.  Remember that these packs are meant for large scale RC planes and can support large 1"-1.5" diameter motors with only one pack.  multiply that times 3-4 and you have a lot of power that can burn a regulator easily.  Look at this lipo as a basic minimum for 2 packs in parallel that can be expanded as you need the capacity.  http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/__9338__Rhino_3700mAh_4S_14_8v_25C_Lipoly_Pack.html
And remember to get a peak charger for it and charge each pack equally.  A slight change in voltage between packs under load could mean a lipo bomb! Be careful about how you charge them!  A kid I knew tried to charge these from the wall adapters in his living room.  He left it there and starting watching TV.  A good 30 minutes later the thing burst and he felt like he was blind from the explosion.  Turned out he left it on the charger too long and the batteries started to swell from overcharge.  A good idea is to get a ziploc bag and put them in it before installing them in your system or charging them up.

Now that my hands are cramped and I am done with the long comment, good luck modding!

Thanks for the info. I might still go wireless. So budget will have to fit battery first then wireless. I cant even order the battery till next month. My funds are all tied up.
I did find out if you wire 10 AA rechargeable@1.2v  to get 12v but I will only see a couple hours of life out of that. I like that idea because the V stays constant till it dies. Most other batteries will loose v slowly over time. The screen uses 2amps and the controller is less than an amp, but its wired for now. and idk how much the psp draws but it cant be much.
I think i need to figure out which wireless device I will use for hdmi video transmission so I can figure out the total draw. Plan for future mods yah know.
This thing is light for its size I would love to keep it that way.
Thanks again for the input.

I think I am stuck. I was testing controls and I went to wire up left stick, and the psp was not giving me anything on left stick. I tried wiring slim nub directly to the contacts and still nothing. I tested couple points where the V feed is and I dont have any v there. I am lost now. My other mobo does not have video out so If I loose left stick I am screwed. This mod will be over if I cant fix it. :cry2:   :sadno:

   :w00t:
I am stoked. This mod is shifting a lil. Being that I am unable to get my analog working on my psp 2000 at all. I started looking into using a different MOBO. I have a couple ol fatties laying around, but I didn't want to break down and gut one. But I figured something out in the process . If I use a PSP go mobo I can use a real dual shock 3 to control my psp through bluetooth. I will still have to wire my controls to the ps3 controller board , but I wouldn't have to wire controls to the psp. I will be wiring up buttons /switches , leds for wifi etc. So a friend had a go he doesnt use, so I made a trade deal tonight for it and I pic it up tomorrow.

POC with some game play and movie and music. Had some trouble with my network at the end.
VIDEO 1 uploading now please be patient. Others will fallow.

VIDEO 3
http://youtu.be/KLjvBwM2ZLM

Side note: The right stick on my dualshock functioned as a right stick when I used the psp in remote play w  my dualshock connected to my psp through blue tooth. I only noticed it when I was adjusting a background image. You have to use the right stick to adjust scale of picture.
Problem is you cant really play games from the stock xmb. and so far I have only been able to get NES to work through XXMB . available in new multimanager. But in that list of emulators there is PSP , PSX , and others , So as things with the emulators get worked out could see something cool there. and being XXmb is kinda new, might see more support.
I would be happy just to store my PSP/PSX games on my external HDD connected to my PS3 using the same method in video as the NES gameplay.
Every ones  probably like so what you got a psp to play an NES game. Well it was not a SONY mini or anything SONY , and I was able to play a game from my PS3 to my PSP.

OMG OMG!
I just played a real PS3 game on my PSP. With dual analog support!
POC video:
http://youtu.be/4z93oqdJffo
http://youtu.be/diI_mZLMWZQ

HOW I did it:
things you need.
Modified PS3 w new multimanager installed. 2.0+ not sure what version we are on.
The game must be able to be direct booted. (post list later)
For dual true analog a psp go is needed to connect bluetooth to ps3 dual shock. The psp can be stock.

Step 1 : sync psp to ps3 dual shock.

Step 2 : initiate remote play.

Step 3 : run multimanager

Step 4 : select game that supports remote play. If it does you should select that check in "game options". This way it does it boots automatically w/o going back to the xmb. Also suggest setting the game to "other" under genre . This way all games supported are easy to find. Full Emulator support soon. currently only nes.

Compatibility list These are all PS3 games that are tested to work direct boot. They are not tested for direct boot for psp yet. But Most will be tested I assure you.

Thanks lobo. Wont see much more of the pretty stuff until the end.
Here is my new ps3 dual shock 3 controller w 3pin analogs. (be weary everyone as walmart is selling knock off ps3 controllers as real ps3 controllers.) (either that or sony has cheapened out on their build.)
These controllers with the grippy black finish are not true ps3 controllers.
Anyways first up is to add resistors to the com 1 and com2 and v. I scraped the coating off contact points for the controls. tp points 103-106 are the analog sticks. the rest will come from the contact points.

I removed the resistors , i will add them in on the connector or on the button board. I pinned out the entire controller to a female IDE . I will solder the male end to the button boards.

A lil bit of an update before debut.
I did some testing with some PS3 games that are whats called blue ray mirrored, instead of direct boot. And boom I was playing a whole new batch of games. These games boot from regular xmb after multi manger boots it. First game tested with BR mirror was Alice madness returned. I love that game and waited for a while for a patch to play it on my modded ps3. The patch came and it made it only play with br mirror. Some games can only be played w br mirror and/or direct boot. Fear 1 and 2 worked played very well on the "PS3GO".
Also I ran a new eithernet cable for my ps3 so my ps3 can be hard wired into my network. This makes for better streaming on my network.
Also I have put some thought into building a controller with a dock for the go as a side project in the future. Just to have simple dualshock controls for the go.
What I like about this mod is the PS3 does all the work, so the graffix are not psp at all. They look better on my psp than on my projection tv.
http://youtu.be/Qdq_M04eJvQ
http://youtu.be/lf4wHPHA6Ks
 new compatibility list:
Alice madness returns
Army of two 40th day
AvP
batman asylum
Battlefield 1, 2 and 3
ben 10 alien something
bioshock 1 and 2
borderlands
condemned 2
COD 4 MW boots for a split sec and black screen. enough to see logo of cod mw. Ill look into a propper patch... all other cods tested either say you can not play this content on remote play or just black screen and freeze ps3.
Crisis 2
dead space 1 and 2
demons souls
devil may cry 4
fear 2 , (1 untested do not have game)
GT5 boots but black screen after first couple loading screens... have not played this game on my ps3 yet, might still work since it tries to boot.
homefront
infamous 1 and 2
ironman 1 and 2
killzone 2 and 3 thats right killzone portable before sony releases vita killzone
lego batman
lego starwars III
mass effect 2
mortal kombat 9
red dead redemption undead
socom 4 ( booted but did not recognize psp as controller not tested w dual shock 3 connected to psp yet. )
soul caliber 4
Spiderman shattered demensions
Street fighter
Turok
Wolfinstein

There are some great titles there. And I have a lot more to test. COD series coming up next. Thats right people portable COD!
Sorry guys so far no black opps... :cry2:
have not tried any game from disc yet.

From what I have heard the vita does not support ps3 remote play of games yet , anyone confirm? Side note I updated multimanager and got ps vita like menu options. remote play supported by multimanager for vita?

Also note graffix are as good as the game and are usually full screen. only the cheaper kids games only display in 4:3 ratio and that is rare. So a game like crisis looks great, and BF3 looks pretty good too. Some games the cuts scenes audio gets choppy but thats really the only lag i get.

I started trying to figure out why some games wont work. I think with some work I can get portable COD. Some of these games took some trial and error and special patches to play. I say I got about as much time in games as I do building the device. But to be able to play some real ps3 games portable is awesome.

Most likely you discharged the LiPo battery too far. This type of battery should not be discharged past a certain "low-voltage" point. Once this happens, the batteries can become unable to charge up again.

There is information on this page, about 1/3 of the way down: http://www.rchelicopterfun.com/rc-lipo-batteries.html

One trick I've heard is to plug the dead battery directly into a charged one for a short while. This should put enough voltage into the dead battery for the charger to accept it. This could save your battery, but I have never tried it, and it could be dangerous, so attempt it at your own risk.

Good luck!

Thanks for the help. I will be running off dc wall power for now. I do not feel safe messing around with a 3s lipo. I will order a new battery in the next couple days. Should be here in a week or 2.
So I am down to assembly. I put everything together and tested and it works good. I do not like the feel of the buttons and the dpad. The buttons them selves feel awesome , its they dont press right. They are clear silicone filled and back lit with smd leds. The leds are hooked up to a fader chip. The triggers are on 1 cycle, the buttons on another, and the PS button is on its own. I ran out of leds or i would have installed them in the R1 and L1 buttons too.
One last touch before its ready.

So here is a teaser before the final paint.
