If sites like Google, Youtube, and Facebook all did this it would have a huge impact on the bill passing.

I doubt it, I haven't seen a site that wasn't still "use-able"...I think these blackouts are pointless if you can still use the features. Making your page have a black background I wouldn't expect make an impact, acidmods is blacked out 24/7 lol

In order for this to make an effect, you shouldn't be able to still search google or even sign in to facebook.

i can make it like that if people really want but i think the banner atleast conveys my beliefs.

also i have been posting this to peoples facebook posts that are freaking out about wikipedia etc.

They are not getting shut down They are in protest against two new bills going through the USA government called SOPA and PIPA. this bill would give the government and entertainment industry the power to take down any website they want and censor them from the internet if they manage to pass these bills. it moves the responsibility and guilt from the content creators (people who upload the videos) to include the people who host the content as well. this would mean that if a site had content on it that breached copyright (think of all those music videos on youtube etc) even if it wasn't the site creators that uploaded it they would technically be able to be shut down and have there funds seized by the USA government.  Its quite a scary bill when you look into it a bit deeper. The problem is most of the people in the USA government and at the top of these big entertainment corporations are greedy old people who don't understand modern technologies and ideologies as much as younger people hence why a lot of them are all for these bills.

I think the point is to get the attention of people who dont really know whats going on. This is a way to get their attention. Here at AM I think everyone knows what this is about. I dont think we need a black out, I like what you did Robin.
