How?

can I just directly swap them or is it like the xbox 360?

yes you can replace the motherboard to a new ps3 drive...  If  that dont work then we move to the next step

Just swap the board out with the same model number drive.

yes matt the ps3 drive are exactly like the xbox drives
A. get the same exact br drive and swap out the board
B."remarry the drive to the board if the firmware is low enough
C.could be wrong but most slims not sure the series but u dont have to remarry the drive any drive will do due to it having the firmware onboard could be wrong will double check when this beer wears off lol

ok so this is the first time I have worked on a ps3.
I have two identical ps3's, one has a bad disk drive, the other has ylod. (Drive worked at last boot.)

the one with the bad drive, takes games in and out, but wont read.

how deep into this do I need to go? there is a big board attached to the bottom of the drive, then another inside and the laser assembly. what part is married to the ps3? is it just the bottom board?

UPDATE:
Ok so I got it done. just swapped the board on the bottom and we are now playing bluray movies again. yay me.


If someone wants the ylod ps3 let me know. the drive is bad and the system is ylod. but all the parts are there. pay the shipping and handling.
