Xbox LEd's 7805 regulator

does anyone know the standard operating temp for the 7805?

I have used this regulator before and never noticed it getting hot like it is now.

I tested and confirmed 12.1V supply from the xbox, and the regulator is putting out a clean 5V, I have a 10ohm resistor running 11 pink LEDs. It should be fine, but the regulator gets hot, hot enough to melt the hot glue holding it in place.

I replaced the regulator. Any ideas?

I would bolt it to the metal chassis, so its like a heatsink, use some thermal compound if you have it. i looked at a datasheet for one and the operating temp can get up to 125 degrees C

After getting back into this project and reading.. LOL so much data is out there if you just read the data sheets....the 7805 is a 5v regulator, but the input voltage is recommended to be 2-3v higher than the output voltage. Once you exceed this, the regulator must discharge this added voltage in the form of heat. Once the regulator gets hot enough it shuts down. http://www.eidusa.com/Electronics_Voltage_Regulator.htm

They generally die around 100C or so. You should try to get a lower input voltage. Also, keep in mind that most 7805 variations can only handle 1 to 1.5 Ampere, and that is all.
