Pickit 3
« on: February 27, 2013, 05:10:51 PM »
Alright, I will start this out by saying that I am a complete noob with programming. I don't know where to start, never tried. Now, with that said, I would like to "try" and play around with it and I may have gotten my chance. I stumbled across a pickit 3 programmer along with some other components but there was no software disc. I will provide a link in hopes of someone telling me what I have and what I'm missing to get started.

The above link is what I have along with a usb cable and a few other cables.
If you guys could, please post a link of what I need to try and figure out how to program.

You will need MPLAB. It's free from Microchip.

http://www.microchip.com/stellent/idcplg?IdcService=SS_GET_PAGE&nodeId=1406&dDocName=en019469&part=SW007002

Once you have it loaded, you select Programmer at the top and choose PICKit3.

If you have existing code then you can import it into MPLAB with File->Import. Or if you want you can write your own code.

Oddly enough the PICKit3 is a little more cumbersome than the PICKit2. I have both and use the PICKit2 for almost everything.

I hope this helps.

Thanks man. Will I need a compiler or anything like that to go with the MPLAB or does the LAB do it all for me? Like I said man, I'm a complete noob at this so sorry for the noobish questions. Funny part is I've taken a programming class but I only passed by attendance. LOL. Now I'm kinda sorry for not fully paying attention.

MPLAB is a all in one tool. If you have a pickit programmer, you dont need anything else.
