12f683 chip power?
« on: July 10, 2013, 09:45:43 AM »
I am working with a 12f683 chip that is programmed with a open source LED Flasher code on here. I do not have a voltage or power tester right now. The specs of the 12f683 chip for power is a min. of 2V to a max. of 5.5V for input, say I run 5V of power to the chip, will the output power be 5V aswell? Or does the chip somehow reduce the power to a different voltage? Any information is greatlt appreciated, thanks.

you will get close to 5v unless you add resistors of your choice for your set up of leds but the recommended 150ohm is also a good setup
what exactly are you trying to do little bit more info would help

correct with Voltage, the output will equal the input. use a voltage calculator to determine what resistor you need for your leds.  http://ledcalculator.net/

So if your using standard blue leds which have a 3.3v drop @20 MA and using a 5V source, you will need a 91ohm 1/8th watt resistor. That is figured for one led at each output, any variance and you should recalculate the resistor.

I appreciate all the info. Im just experimenting with the LED flasher open source code for the 12f683 chips on projects such as edge lit acrylic and other stuff. Thanks again for the fast responses.

It's worth noting that there is a limit on how much current you can sink or source from these PIC I/O pins, might pay to check the data sheet, I think its about 30ish mA but don't take my word for it.
What this means is you shouldn't really be running more than 2 leds in parallel off these outputs, and that would be pushing it. Probably need to use the PIC outputs to control transistors that will run the led's from from your VCC.
Unsure how other people have got around this, I bet there are a bunch of circuits available in the original led fader thread.
