Case Mod: Rustoleum Galaxy Blue
« on: October 02, 2013, 09:59:39 AM »
This is my first case mod and I'm curious as to what color LEDS i should use with the Rustoleum Galaxy Blue colorshift paint?  The case has a 9 1/2 x 7 1/2 plexi window in it.

Here is a few pics of the first coat, the can said to add 3-4 coats for the best effect.  I have blue masking tape on the inside of the items to keep the flat black look on the inside of the parts.  The pics are from diff angles so you might be able to see the color change effect.

This is the Primer & Flat Black that I used for the base coat: $6.11 per can

This is the Galaxy Blue: $23.99 per can

This will be the Clear Coat that I will be using: $7.98 per can

I'll be using 2 cans each of  the paint mentioned above,

love those color shift paints very well done. It looks like a galaxy on those parts.

Hmm since the shift of color goes from a green to blue and purple in different angle. Try using the same three set of color as well. Placement I guess is all you need to figure out to hit the color shift in the right spot.

it's going to take awhile to get it done because i'll end up using 3 cans of the galaxy blue and its $25 a can.  It's going to be $100 paint job.

The Galaxy Blue doesn't look as good doing it in the evening when the suns low.  I painted the bottom half of the case and the face plate yesterday when it was cooling off and the sun was down and it looked bad so now I have to sand it down and redo so that was a half of a can wasted.

Here's an example of how bad it looked when I done it in the evening when the sun was down.

Temperament of the paint starts to react to the change in temperature. The cure process in this paints have to have temperature over 72 degree or it leaves bashes, wet spot or off shades.

It tend to happen to me, living in a very humid summer state the paint job works great during the 87 to 95 degree weather. As soon as sunset when temperature climbs down quick to 82 and down to 74 or 70 as fall approaches the chemical in the paint starts to react differently and leaves this bashes sometimes doesn't cure at all and other deforms leaving off shade and thin spots or pull and thick spots or dips.

I figured out a quick fix when wanting to get the last bit of painting.

After every paint layer run it to an end close area like room corner or make one using cardboard box and  leave it under a small room heat fan. I use low fan speed and high temperature close to summer 95 degree. This reactivates the curing process and the paint  begins to reform back again. I tend to move it around after every 30 to 45 minute to get to every corner.
