Changed LED's now controller won't turn on

I changed the LEDs in two controller and now neither of the controllers will turn on! Why is this ? What could I do to fix it.

idk if this is why, but u do know led's have to be installed a certain way right.... like they arent like regular lights tht just need a current, the (+) side from the controller has to go to the (+) lead on the led

Yes I know I have done a few controllers before but this one won't work, every now and then the lights will flash once and then go off again

Your question is too vague to to diagnose. U will need to provide pictures of the board u are having issues with. From the sounds of things u might  have arched two connections or possible accidentally de solder a important component on the board. On some controllers there are small resistors right next to the player two led and when u de solderd that led u could of accidentally heated that resistor and destroyed or desolderd it.
From looking at some of your previous post I would work on your soldering skills. I'd use one of the boards u fried and practice soldering on it. When installing LEDs u should sweat the LEDs off by getting a small glob of solder on your tip and running that glob back and fourth over both the existing leds connections till it eaisly comes off leaving two flat soldering points. Its too hard to explain maybe u tube it and practice it. This is the best info I can give to u without seeing what u actually have going on.

Make sure that the leds are the proper way also looks like you might of desoldered the cap in the pic i see there is solder on it but i am sure your leds not on properly and its turning on just no led activity

Yes look at your pic your got solder all over it also I bet your leds are not on correctly!!!!


Where it says C28 on the controller gold with 2 silver ends is a Capacitor  you could of desoldered it  LIke i said i bet your leds are not on correctly!!!

J3 by led #1 looks bad. Try to clean all the solder debress up on your board. I Dont know how many times I've installed a mod chip and everything looks perfect then I find one little spec of solder touching some important connection.

If u want to be 100% to if your LEDs are on the right way u should take the led u want to put on and just set it on top the two connections and turn the controller on. If its facing the right way they will light up. I Dont even look at the bottom of the led as I Dont trust anyone that I buy from. I do it like this one led at a time.

Word of advice as well try using less solder. I'm also curious about your modding equipment? What watt soldering iron are u using and are you taking care of the tip and cleaning it after every solder connection? The tools of the trade are important. Your only as good as the tools your using.

Yes the best tools in the world can't do the work for u but having equipment that isent up to par can make soldering very difficult. The tip could be all used up or all coated black to were solder won't even heat up right. There are variables to everything and having the right equipment is crucial to the work your doing. I'm not saying go out and buy all the fanciest tools just make sure they are in working order.

The Capacitors are fine, C6 and C26 (not C28) are not installed from the factory, that's supposed to look like that.

There is enough solder alone on D2 that 2 controller LED swaps could be done, and if there isn't a short there I'd be surprised. D4 is the only passable one, but even it looks like one side has no solder on it from that pic.

LED swaps don't kill controllers, even if shorts are made there after it's all straightened up it should be back to working. Clean that mess off there and then test the controller, you don't need LEDs installed to see if it works. Then make sure the LEDs are oriented correctly and test after installing each one.

nerdy... i learned and used a 10 dollar no name solder iron (it is a POS but i got proficient w/ it pretty fast) until last year, BUT i have a cordless now tht uses batteries ( i use rechargeable lithium ion batteries) and coupled w/ flux it's like crazy easy to solder... picked it up @ wally world for like 35 dollars and it is great.... next investment is a variable temp solder station w/ a built in multi-meter... but thts irrelevant...

to the OP, buy some flux, because either u clean up REALLY well, or you just didnt use it... it helps the solder stick.... makes it to where you wont have giant globs (if you do it right) and just makes life sooooo much easier. its only like 4-5 dollars at radio shack, or any hardware store, also invest in a desoldering tool and some thread, also REALLY helpful.

I hear ya. I learned  to solder using cheep harbor freight equipment. My old soldering irons would run about 7$ lol. Like RDC said the best tools in the world cant do the work for. I just wanted to make sure the equipment he was using was "how to say" operational. I myself use to use those 7$ soldering irons till the tip was all melted and coated black to were solder wouldn't even want to stick to it. Having the right equipment just makes life so much smother!

I missed that one Rodent, but even if that cap were missing or broken the controller would still work as it's just a decoupler. A short there would jack things up though.

If that controller is still dead after removing the LEDs, then change however you're testing it, use a PnC cable to plug up to the 360.

only reason i mentioned it was do to he said it wouldn't power on.  he also told me personally that it flashes the leds when he puts battery pack in i told him to try new batteries and make sure the leds were oriented correctly   possible solder joints not connected or torn trace on the leds thinking that the controller isn't powered on due to no led activity.

Well after messing about and trying to find the problem it ended up being the stupid batteries just like rodent told me to check -.-

I plugged a play and charge lead in and the light came on perfect, so then tried it with some new batteries and it works.
