cyber showed me the gp2x today. after doing alittle research on its newest version, the gp2x f200, ive decided that the console is a worthwhile investment.
these are the specs on it
Chipset: MagicEyes MMSP2 MP2520F System-on-a-Chip
CPU: 200MHz ARM920T host processor, 200MHz ARM940T programmable coprocessor (can be overclocked to 319)
NAND Flash ROM: 64 MB
RAM: SDRAM 64 MB
Operating System: Linux-based OS
Storage: SD Card (Latest firmware support SDHC)
Connection to PC: USB 2.0 High Speed
USB Host: USB 1.1
Power: 2 × AA battery or via AC adapter (battery mod not a problem)
Display: 320×240 3.5 inch, 65,536 colors TFT LCD (touch screen with stylus)
TV output
Physical size: 143.6 mm wide, 82.9 mm high, 27 mm (excl. joystick approx.) / 34 mm deep
Weight: 161 g (without battery)
after doing much research on it, its got one of the best homebrew/emulation for a handheld out there. only problem is it cant emulate psp items. so to fix that problem im going to attempt a hybrid of the 2 by combining both hardwares into one device. more than likely im going to have to make a shell for it which isnt a problem. more than like its going to have 2 lcds (one for psp and the other for 2x)
basically its got linux based xmb with no limitations on software, usb host, tv out, dualcore capable of overclocking to 319mhz, touchscreen, capable of hooking up any usb device (if u have or can make the driver), sd card reader.

keep us updated, even if you have to show us the secret notebook
as it is... looks easier to hold (less cramp)
-
how much does it cost?
-
169.99 its at their site (sponsor of this site)

benheck's done something like this before, not the same consoles but same concept
good luck
It was a NES/Atari in one handheld
-
lol the ads was right up there lol never noticed it
-
once i get the hybrid together, ill wire up the psp usb port to the gp2x ext port (usb host port) and port usbhostfs to gp2x.
-
lol seems like he is working in every direction on the whole usbhost thing with the psp. Very Nice.
-
haha, I only imagine the 10 armed ninja god Krashniko with 3 processors, 2 lcds and usbhostfs. Now I don't kno for super sure, but I think you need the cradle to get the usb host.
-
comparison of the 2
and u dont need the cradle to be usb host.

now your just confusing people
thats not the f-200, thats an earlier model
-
i kno but the dimensions and design are the same

the entire back shell with battery will be removed and a custom shrunken down shell will be on the gp2x as it will lighten it quite a bit and let it be mounted on top of the psp. the hinge will only open up 135 degrees which is what your ds has set too. the battery for the gp2x will be relocated in the psp's umd drive space. there is also space for a flash drive in there. the flash drive will be wired to the gp2x usb host port. the psp's usb port will be wired to the gp2x usb host port. installing usbhostfs on gp2x will be a breeze since the gp2x is linux based. when you're accessing usbhostfs with the psp, the gp2x will be set at the lowest possible clock speed to preserve battery life.
of course i forgot to mention this but gp2x can multitask so i can be surfing the web etc while playing on the psp.
-
I know that this isn't constructive and you hear this all the time, PvP;
YOU ARE AMAZING! Is there anything you can't do?
I will never be able to make something like that, but just watching a POC would be amazing...
-
congrats pvp
even tho im talking to u on msn
lol
good job!
u deserve to be a complete admin
-
going over the dimensions and materials, this will actually be quite easy to build. total weight will be estimated at 421g
-
0.928146 lb
or a lil bit under a pound for thos who dont know grams too well lol
-
What size are we talking about for storage space?
If it is for a flash drive foowie i think the HDD is much better.
But i love your idea this is realy good thinking on getting around the psp hardware limitations. Koodos for you.
USB flash drive , they cost a lot and aren't that big. i have a 4 Gb flash drive but i also have a 4 gb memory stick it is a wash.
cant you take a HDD and do the same thing that is used to make a hdd in to a portable usb one( the cases that have a lithium battery that do i cant remember i am tierd almost falling assple at the key board.) .
just take the gut out and it should fit in the umb tray with a hdd like the ipod. may have to mount two chips but it may work if you are going this route.
-
i could but when u stack the psp with the gp2x heighwise i dont think its wise to add a hdd considering it will increase the bulkiness. what im doing is sticking the flashdrive inside the umd drive next to the gp2x battery
-
the hinges that will attach the psp and gp2x will be screwed to the plates. ill have to drill holes on the hinge where the usb screw holes are on the psp and then screw the hinge to the psp there. ill have to drill holes into the gp2x faceplate and then put screws there.
-
was about to go to sleep when my mind started thinking about my notebook again and then i realized i had started a design which i never finished.

grey pencil shading represents ps2 controller
r2 and l2 will be wired to the gp2x's triggers. after i researched the mobo of the gp2x i didnt realize how easy it was to wire up the buttons to external buttons
pic of gp2x f200 mobo
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg169.imageshack.us%2Fimg169%2F3205%2Ff2002fh5mh0.jpg&hash=88b88d5e6ba6e2e7a428dd50b21b1fdeb52526bb) (http://imageshack.us)
i also did addition customer research to find that most people that have this complain about its 'awkward lightness' without the battery so this will be quite useful when doing the hinge.
-
What are the chances of trying to get both mobos into 1 case and making the top flip down part about as thick as the LCD screen because it kinda looks clunky
-
MY opinion is,
this will never work.
so much work and i dono if it will look neat.
-
well the fact is that i cant make the grip detachable because itll make the console unstable. its just easier if i do it this way
-

i still rather have a little bulk to my psp too add a hdd. then not to add it if you are going this far to add a ps2 controler that adds bulk i sujest to add a hdd to top it off.
Are you removing the case of the --- and creating a new one for it elminating the buttons and the batteriy space it cant be that hard to transfer the mobo of one of the Laptop USB External Enclosure that contain the battery. it wouldn't add much weight then have the HDD connection next to the flash drive connection in the umd drive if you want to add a HDD
Would this work?
-
nice work you have going on :D
although imho it looks hideous with the ps2 controller :D
-
this is what we call a labor of love  Whatever it looks like, so be it, its pvp's time traveling, touch screening, back flipping mofo. I think if it comes together phyiscally as it does in the picture in the notebook that enough for me to appreciate this entire process. Go pvp go.
-
it doesnt look that bad.
i see where he is going with this their is going to be no tuts on how to do this he is going to resell them. lol
Looks o good on paper cant wait to see the finished thing.
-
lol its a lot harder than u think.... ive added the ps2 controllers because if im going to relocate the buttons it needs more support while gripping.
-
it looks kwl but couldnt you have the gp2x and the psp wired up to the same buttons
-
yeah and use a switch so that if you need them to be separate then you can just switch it
-
that would require too much additinal time on this. having 2 sets of buttons would be more ideal since ill be able to access both consoles at the same time without having to switch
-
true that is what makes it a hybird. Just like adding HDD support if wanted right.
I openend my ipod up and the HDD and board take up hardly any room.3.3v the HDD is too. i have a 5g i wonder what the inside of my sisters 6g ipod is like. cant you just buy the HDD from apple and stuff them put the guts into the umd drive bay that would take no room.
I went to ipodlinux forms like i do often but this time i looked for some one talking about usbhostfs and got the ipod to ipod usbhost (only one ipod has to have linux the other in disc mode) no good, this was no help. now i know you ported the usbhostfs to the ipod but how or where can i get it.
-
lol just port it. right now im deciding whether or not to add the ps2 handles. im thinking i have to because the dpad/facebuttons are too close to the bottom with a lot of weight towards the middle which would throw off the center of mass for gripping.
right now my main concern is that the gp2x f200 has usb host 1.0. if it was usb 2.0 i wouldnt care but ive never streamed anything to my psp (using usbhostfs) with usb 1.0. anyone kno if theres going to be lag or lag spikes?
-
i would guess their would be some what of a lag considering that the usb 1.0 has a lot less transfer rate then the usb 2.0. Any ways that is what i was told by my prophesier. cant rember the dif off hand i should but i cant think of it.i thought i read that it was usb 2.0
12 mbps is the max and the usb 2.0 is 480mbps
a hard drive uses 40-320mbps
flash drive now hits at least 30mbps
then again i could be dead wrong.
-
ok ive tried it on an older computer with usb 1.0.
the load time for the games are longer but im not experiencing any lag during game play so thats good.
-
169.99 its at their site (sponsor of this site)
I think that is an alright price, i would purchase from eBay if possible though.
It looks like a brick though :dntknw:
-

Have you tried it with GTA: LCS
-
no i tried it with silent hill
-
no i tried it with silent hill
try it wiht fifa 08 cuz that game lags even on some slower memory sticks. So it would be a good way to judge all scenarios etc.
-
just tried it with wipeout pure and i ran a lap w/o any lag on usb 1.0 with usbhostfs
-
Ya but you should try it with one of the more biger games that are 1gb or more to really see the diff like ff7 or manhunt 2 are two good ones to try it out on.
-
He will do it with whatever games he has.
Not just becasue they are your favourite, noob.
-
Really amazing, is this really doable ???
Then the DS must vanish in front of this supa-hybrid
-
It looks like the psp's face buttons are too far , but I like this hardcoregamer's muttantmonster :#1:
-
As i keep looking at the handles it would seem that it would be too top heavy unless you put weight on the handles to balance it off. I dont know but i remember when i had the GBA the big one and had to get a light but i also bought the handles add ons and it hurt your wrists. am afraid this may do the same thing.
Hey pvp could you switch the screens around so the touch screen is at the bottom an the psp at the top it may be easier to operate.
-
I think that is an alright price, i would purchase from eBay if possible though.
It looks like a brick though :dntknw:
i wouldnt as i have had to many troubles with large purchases on ebay i would buy it from a trusted site that help support a small modding comunity
-
ya man dont get it from ebay save a little money and buy from a trusted site. you have some time before this is made public if this works.
-
i dont want to switch the ts to the bottom because the gp2x is lighter by design so it should go on top
just msged Mathieulh about having a xmb icon...
'That would require either to code your own xmb or to reverse vshmain and the way rco files are done. This would be way too time consumming'
-
Why do you need and icon for. I guess i missed something. I would ask him how we can add the usbhost that irshell has into the xmb. I mean you can switch the usb from flash or memory and umd why not add the usbhost as an option.
-
Other then being pink in that last one I think it would look fairly cool and would be really entertaining to make. I don't think I would get enough use out of it to do the mod though, my PSP gets a lot of use and adding bulk to it makes it far less worthwhile to carry around.
-
It is not that much bulk. It is a few more pounds of weight and a few inches wider it cant fit in a pocket but it is a way to go if you own 2 psp's one for home with the hybird and one for the road.
-
like i said this will never work.
if you want to let it look good you need upto 1000 dollar...
Pvp, stop showing 10 new mods everyday....just make one and let it work.
-

haha, you can't blame him for dreaming big!
-
dude if u pull this off then, i would be :censored: speechless
-
this is very doable. hardest part of the whole mod i think is gettig it all to gether and look nice with out wires out and zip ties holding the parts together. but the rest cant be that hard to do.

lifesize prototype drawing

below the psp shell will be the top part of the ps2 controller (without handle)
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg211.imageshack.us%2Fimg211%2F5078%2Fp1170002mt3.jpg&hash=c329ba75f8fe6b00eb72ac78846ab5053bb481a1)
will need to shorten the height of the top half to let the analog sticks poke out without hitting the top half
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg247.imageshack.us%2Fimg247%2F3554%2Fp1170004pu9.jpg&hash=62d93a1e52c173d21e92b20f3ffad10bff4f6b44)
it curves with the palm perfectly. if i reduce as much weight as i can for the top half of the case, and make the bottom heavy i can use the bottom dpad/facebuttons without having it unbalanced
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg503.imageshack.us%2Fimg503%2F9049%2Fp1170005cs8.jpg&hash=56d71fc74f3c85c3d1d14742eda330864e23d321)
-
Show us a picture where you reach for those Analog sticks, and don't drop that paper thing.
-
PvP, you have always had some wierd analog placement. personatly i would put the analog sticks ( i would actually use nubs like the stock ones.) were the dpad and face buttons are and the buttons were the analog sticks are. easier to hold in my oppinion but it is your mod, do as you feel.
-
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg205.imageshack.us%2Fimg205%2F2606%2Fp1170006ot3.jpg&hash=922fa52bd858191c8308dc87efa815dcbfbe1273) (http://imageshack.us)
this is where the triggers for the f200 and psp fps will be located underneath where my finger is positioned...
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fimg175.imageshack.us%2Fimg175%2F4504%2Fp1170007ll9.jpg&hash=b58a3d818f7543d4fe35b4320d64a0f65561e760) (http://imageshack.us)
right now its alil iffy about the balance when using the analog sticks. if i put the ps2 controller handles on there, it will definitely grip and balance a whole lot better but idk if i want to sacrifice some more height on this project.
-
So you will pretty much hold the whole console on 2 analog sticks in the end... oh god.
-
if that doesnt work i either have to go with the ps2 controller or extend alittle outwards from the dpad/facebutton so itll fit the hands alil better
-

ik what you mean, with the whole thing on the top/front, when you are using the analog it will all want to go and fall backward on you
your best bet is problly to put the ps2 handles on it, screw portability, it will be awezome
-
For balance it is good but for finger placement it is kinda poor i dont know about thos analog where they are. It is comming along but hier are still some flaws with the design
-
well i want dpad with analog and facebuttons with digital analog for the psp. and also i need dpad/facebuttons for f200 so i really cant do much about the placement of it. i mean other tahn placing the analogs where the lower dpads/facebuttons are thats about it. but that will get in the way if u want to use the upper dpad/facebuttons
-
can you not just either wire one dpad/other side to eacother or merge them into 1 would be way better. by one imean like a whole new board or set of tactile buttons.
-
too much work and idk if itll fit underneath it.
-
too much work and idk if itll fit underneath it.
It will, now go and do it, because that other way is horrible.
-
i mean i could easily do the right side and put in tactile buttons underneath the facebuttons but idk how to do it to the leftside considering its ribboned
-
i mean i could easily do the right side and put in tactile buttons underneath the facebuttons but idk how to do it to the leftside considering its ribboned
Solder to the ribbon connectors like real men O_o
-
well even if i soldered tactile switches underneath the dpad and facebuttons, there is the fact that i need to wire up the 8 wires to a switch or multiple switches to switch back and forth. first off no way am i going to use 8 switches for all 8 buttons. and im not sure where to find a micro 8 lead 3-way switch
-
too much work i say forget that just keep it the way you had it .
