Woo hoo! This even overshadows the fact that me and a few friends actually convinced someone to rm -rf /
To think that 2 great computing related things have happened in one day, makes me almost cry.

Yeah, 'bout half Vista needs. Seriouslyy.
I've got my beta build I got running INSIDE VMWare on my ubuntu partition.
Only 1gb of RAM suppplied to it. Boots fast and is super quick...
...and that's inside of another OS.

Triple boot OSx86 10.5.5, Vista Ultimate, and Ubuntu 8.10
Ubuntu is my OS for testing others, since I've already got VMware installed.
All on my laptop =]

I triple boot Vista, Windows 95 and Gentoo. Gentoo took a while to start compiling but it did it eventually. Windows 95 is there for sentimental reasons above all else.

don't do that command if your running an os which does runs unix commands. Most probably your install is protected from it unless you disable it. I think Ubuntu does because its whole aim is easy computing which your grandparent's shouldn't easily break.

If you're interested, it is a command which deletes all files from all mounted filesystems (apart from those which are read-only of course [luckily for someone I know ])

Probably not, does OSX run UNIX commands?

Apparently rm is a command for terminal or whatever its called. So... it may do.

EDIT: Upon further inspection it seems -f can be used to force delete so actually it probably would, so don't try it. I figures since it is mainly built on Nextstep which is UNIX (I think)

Not sure about the newest OSX, but I know OSX is Unix based. At least, I'm 99% sure.

Yeah, because I found a website that said rm -f is a valid command so rm -rf / should be.

This thread has gone from Windows 7 Beta to rm -rf /

I wanna see just how close they mimick the vista.  It seemed most of vista's problems spawned from
trying to prevent piracy.  Should be interesting.

It's apparently a lot faster and less resource intensive than Vista too. The thing I am anticipating most is Libraries.

Unfortunately they have delayed the release for people who aren't members of the MSDN.

Update on Windows 7 Beta Availability
Brandon LeBlanc
Due to very heavy traffic we’re seeing as a result of interest in the Windows 7 Beta, we are adding some additional infrastructure support to the Microsoft.com properties before we post the public beta. We want to ensure customers have the best possible experience when downloading the beta, and I’ll be posting here again soon once the beta goes live. Stay tuned! We are excited that you are excited!

windows 7 is pretty neat, i have it running in VMWare rather well despite no official vm support for it, the only thing i can't do is use the aero becuase the virtual graphics card, although, i might be able to; im not sure..

in any case, its pretty neat and rather fast, which is definitely good

Are microsoft's servers kinda retarded?

Its powerful enough to withstand the masses, downloading massive files at the same time (i downloaded 32 bit and 64 bit)

And it downloaded fast too

But theres not enough bandwidth for my to get a small 10 digit or so code so I can use it

If its a free beta release, why does it even need a code?

Due to the large amount of dl requests MS switched to master keys, there are 10 of them and they are as follows:
From the 64bit link:
JYDV8-H8VXG-74RPT-6BJPB-X42V4
RFFTV-J6K7W-MHBQJ-XYMMJ-Q8DCH
482XP-6J9WR-4JXT3-VBPP6-FQF4M
D9RHV-JG8XC-C77H2-3YF6D-RYRJ9
7XRCQ-RPY28-YY9P8-R6HD8-84GH3
From the 32bit link:
6JKV2-QPB8H-RQ893-FW7TM-PBJ73
4HJRK-X6Q28-HWRFY-WDYHJ-K8HDH
GG4MQ-MGK72-HVXFW-KHCRF-KW6KY
QXV7B-K78W2-QGPR6-9FWH9-KGMM7
TQ32R-WFBDM-GFHD2-QGVMH-3P9GC

And so you know, the 32bit and 64 bit are interchangeable.

you'll just have to go and activate it on the phone.

you activate it online and just put in the key

i got this early cos i was signed up to MSDN, and 'Microsoft Devs' get it earlier.

I've had it installed a week, and it is very good i must say. Though the level of noob-friendliness is good for the everyman, the techy like you or I can get irritated by the dumbing down of process names.

The difference between 32bit and 64bit is the same for ALL operating systems.
The ability to read/recognize more RAM.

64 Bit, have more ram capacity, more faster (because you get more out of your ram)

but unfortunatly you have to use different drivers for everything, and usually companys dont really care so they only release 32 bit, so I never use 64bit anymore

and you have to have a 64bit processor

yes they are
...then why doesn't it say that when you're looking at specs? And why can you run 64bit OS's on just about any processor?

Higher end cpus are usally 64bit, but 64bit can run 32bit aswell

Also thats why theres 64 in 'AMD 64'

thats the thing, you cant run a 64 bit OS on a 32 bit processor and vise versa. Thats why they make 32 bit and 64 bit OS's, other wise, why waste the time?
Title: Re: Windows 7 public beta comming tomorrow the 9th
Post by: PspKicks316 on January 11, 2009, 01:54:40 PM
why waste the time?
Because 64bit can read more ram?
Lol. I don't get it. Where on a specs sheet or on newegg or something, does it say whether it's 64 or 32bit?
Like I plan on getting a core i7...and 6gb or 12gb of RAM. That needs 64bit. The Core i7 should handle 64bit right...?

Seriously like this is confusing the hell outta me, I've never even heard of 32/64bit processor architecture...

Although I tried the x86 and x64, but I dont have a 64bit CPU in my laptop and x86 is having the driver issues :O

the only things that didnt install drivers for were my SD and Memory Stick slot drivers. not a big loss xD
windows update even automatically installed the pre-release drivers for my NVidia 8400M GT.

I heart Windows 7 it is awzum. fast, and uses 29% RAM whereas Vista uses about 40% lol.
less RAM usage = more battery life
sweet sweet battery life.
