 My dad grounded me from my soldering iron "until further notice"... that means my mod i'm working on is postponed.
-
Whyd you get grounded frome it?
-
I was in the middle of soldering, and my mom comes in and makes me put my laundry away. so I left, and the iron was still on. I came back like 20 minutes later to a soldering iron turned off, and my dad all pissed at me...
-
there you go then
NEVER leave an iron on unattended.
-
LOL... agreed with proper. I mean, I've left my iron for 10 secs to check a diagram, but never for like 20 minutes. That's pretty bad for your tip, anyway, since it must be oxidizing like crazy.

Naw, I always clean it before I leave it, so It's just fine. And mine takes a minute or so to unplug (my workbench has weird plugs), and i had to go really fast cause my mom was yelling...
-
Erm... If you clean it, it's even worse. There is nothing protecting your metal from your tip from oxidizing. If you coated it with solder, the solder would oxidize, therefore protecting your tip atleast a bit.

:/ dang, well, it isn't oxidized, so I'm fine either way :D
-
 i left mine on when i went to vactoin lol and its fine
-
yeah dude i would say dont leave your iron on. I forgot to turn mines off and went to sleep when i woke up it burnt thru my bag and was still burning. Luckly it was just my bag.
-
Yeah ive left my iron on before for a couple hours, but i have a stand that sits on an alluminum plate, so everything was all good! :hifive:
-
Generally the term cleaning refers to tinning, considering there is no other way to "clean" your iron tip.

yeah, but I have this thing to get rid of ANY junk on my iron, You tin it, and then wipe it down with this metal-ish cloth.

-

lol, not the first time... I also wasn't allowed to use it for a while, because when I was little and he was trying to teach me, I thought that the metal near the grip was cool to the touch, so I touched it... It hurt like hell
-
oh yea im sure everyone has done it before i did couple times
-
Would make things a LOT easier to do if it was cool to the touch >.< Though I can say that I have never done it... My dad was VERY clear on what was ok with it, and what wasn't.

-

-
Cold heat? Those suck for soldering.

There is, but let me refrase that... "I wish they had a soldering iron that cools down without burning you AND doesn't absolutely SUCK."
