Title: My computer build
Post by: PspKicks316 on January 14, 2010, 02:05:09 PM
Intel Xeon w3520 2.66GHz i7 CPU (being overclocked)
Asus P6X58D motherboard (bought)
12GB DDR3 1600MHz RAM (overclocked?)
850w Corsair 850tx
Tri Monitors (not sure model)
ATI Radeon HD 5970 GPU
Thermaltake Element V case (bought)
128GB SSD
300GB WD Velociraptor (bought)
1TB of storage
All watercooled
Haven't decided on any drive bays yet, but I'll have a DVD/CD burner, Card reader, and Bluray reader for sure.
Custom lighting? Hell yeah. Haven't decided what yet.

Should have all of it bought by the end of the month or middle of next month.. =)

Thoughts? Ideas? Go for it.

What are you going to use it for? Seems like overkill.

Still, no doubt about it, it's a rockin' system

pretty much a ballin system. Its insanely fast.

Everything ;)
It'll be hooked up to my HDTV for the 3rd monitor and 7.2 channel (buying after the computer) home theater setup as well.
Gaming while sitting on the couch ftw.

Thanks for the feedback.
Motherboard came in today!
Case is being delivered on Tuesday.

I'm extremely excited I'm finally able to build a sick desktop.
Thanks for the comments =D
Next parts I'm buying are the RAM and probably the CPU and SSD.

Eventually I'll price out the build and then compare it to what I'm actually paying lol

I can see this passing the 4k point easily, however, what kinda ram are u getting? why arent u reusing that 1k cpu?
Title: Re: My computer build
Post by: PspKicks316 on January 15, 2010, 06:36:06 PM
Because I can sell it and get a cheaper one that will suffice.
Might upgrade in the future, but I highly doubt I'll need to.

Any thoughts on the hard drive setup?
If I went SAS drives, they'd be blazing fast, but a ton more expensive and I'd need a SAS controller too...
and if I went 7k2 SATA hard drives, they'd still be fast but not that fast, and I'd be fine.

Or maybe get a 1TB SATA drive for now then upgrade to a 1TB SATA 3.0 drive when possible, then just keep the SATA 2.0 drive still.

Any ideas?
Title: Re: My computer build
Post by: aquatsr on January 15, 2010, 07:42:57 PM
Go for the best hard drives (best as in fastest) possible, because that's the slowest part of your system. Also unless you definitely need 12 GB of RAM right now I'd buy 4 and slowly upgrade as the price of RAM continues to drop.

Actually, now that I think about it, you already have a fast drive (the Velociraptor) that I'm assuming you'll game off of, so the 1 TB should be pure storage, so instead of speed go for reliability - you don't want that thing dying at any point.

As for the RAM, get however much you need and buy more later. You'll save a decent chunk of money.
Title: Re: My computer build
Post by: PspKicks316 on January 16, 2010, 06:25:34 AM
Sounds like a good idea to me.
I really wanted to go for 4GB sticks, so that it could be upgraded to 24GB in the future.. haha.

I'll check my mobo specs and see what DIMMS need to be filled to boot.
The 12GB was only like $250, not bad.
I'll go 6GB for now then grab another 6GB after a while then.

Any suggestions on really reliable hard drive manufacturers?

edit:
Found an OCZ Z-Drive 512GB version that ends in just under 2 days. If it goes for a decent price, I may pick that up. I doubt it'll go that cheap though.

edit 2:
There's 2 drives. I'm trying to get both. 1TB of SSDs > any hard drives.

edit 3:
Nevermind =( My x1 slot would bottleneck it too much for it to be of any advantage. I'll just try for 1 and then get a hard drive with it.

I'm going back down to an i7 920, so 4.8GT/s. I felt a Xeon was overkill. If I wanna upgrade in the future, my friend can get me any Xeon for about 2/3 of retail price.

Lol. Should be buying PSU or RAM soon.

I think I'm gonna get the basic computer (Just need GPU, PSU, CPU, and RAM left for that) and then sell my laptop to pay for some other stuff (other RAM, LCS, HDDs, Monitors).

I'll keep you guys posted.

Got about $375, about $100 cash, getting about $100 hopefully tomorrow, possibly another $45 soon. Maybe more cash soon too.

Once I get the PSU, one set of RAM, and the CPU then I'm going to sell my laptop and buy more parts using that money.

Post Merge: January 31, 2010, 01:32:04 PM
Got a CPU.
Xeon w3520. 2.66GHz, SLBEW stepping (D0).
OEM.

Got it for $185 =D
Title: Re: My computer build

Got a CPU LCS block, a radiator, and some blue led lit case feet. $98 shipped. I wanted to use up this $100 visa I had.

Got $150, and getting ~$500 probably by the end of next week.
Also selling chocolate in school for side money.

Uh. Yeah...this is on hold for a while. Paypal closed my account and I lost $1300 (well, for 180 days) and I've got to pay $1200 of that back to my friend...

Title: Re: My computer build
Post by: loganbyers07 on February 09, 2010, 12:35:25 PM
Dude, how do you owe your friend $1200? Drugs? LOL j/p but seriously why did your account get locked?
Title: Re: My computer build
Post by: PspKicks316 on February 09, 2010, 12:43:52 PM
I'm selling stuff on his behalf. We both make money.

My account was limited because of too many high payments, and then when I couldn't provide ID, they locked it. It's limited until I turn 18 and I have to wait 180 days before I can request a payout.

Oh well. Check the auction section. Selling a few things.

Post Merge: February 10, 2010, 01:33:32 PM
Should be ordering the 12GB of RAM and the PSU by next weekend along with maybe buying some more LCS parts.
Then I'll have another $575 in another week or two and I'll be buying my two TB hdds and probably the rest of the LCS and if there's enough left over then maybe a screen. After that, it all goes to the GPU.

Post Merge: February 12, 2010, 11:58:01 AM
Radiator, CPU block, AS5, and case feet came in today.
The case feet aren't compatible with my case (it says compatible with all TT cases though=/). Oh well.

Installed a 120mm fan onto the rad and mounted it on the top of my case in the spare 120/200mm spot. I just checked specs, and my fan was actually 140mm but it fit the 120mm holes on the rad perfectly fine. Hey, works for me.

It looks pretty awesome right now. =D

Oh, and in case anyone hasn't noticed, the OP specs are constantly being changed slightly based on available products and prices. So far, this build is worth like ~$1200 and I've spent ~$900 on it.

Title: Re: My computer build
Post by: PspKicks316 on February 14, 2010, 05:19:22 PM
I've been looking at stuff and I've figured out how I'll do my liquid cooling system.

It starts with the pump, which gets the water from the reservoir. The outflow from the pump will be split. One line will go to the NB, then the GPU, then a voltage regulator, and finally to a 120mm radiator. The other line will go to the SB, then the CPU, then the other regulator, and finally to the second 120mm radiator. The line will then join, and go to the external (most likely 120mm) radiator. From here, it goes back into the case to the reservoir.

:censored:ing A.
My LCS setup is currently $390, and I spent ~$80 more on parts already, and then I'll need the other two radiators. Oh lawdy.

This gives new definition to "Go big or go home".

Possibly buying a SSD by the end of the week. Possibly.
Same 128GB 1.8" that I was gonna get from my friend, except instead of getting it from him for $150, I'm buying it from a retailer for ~$280. It retails about $350 so that's still good.
Title: Re: My computer build

He can't get anymore and he refuses to sell me one of his (he's running 4 in Raid 10).

The SSD speeds are amazing too. Seq read is ~220mb/s and write is ~200mb/s.
It'll be plugged into my SATA 3.0 port so it boots first and so there's no chance of bottlenecking it.

edit:
Aw :censored:ers. It was bought. I'd rather not pay $350 for one... oh well. I'll wait for another chance to get one.

Anyway, I'll have about $760 or $900 by the end of this week. About $425 of that is going towards watercooling parts. Check out the res I'm getting. Ohmygod<3

The other $475 will go towards RAM ($280ish), the PSU ($135ish), and the other $60 will go to whatever else I come across in that price range.

edit 2:
Found another at $300 with $30 shipping BIN/OBO. I'll see if I can get it $300 shipped...
Found ANOTHER at $300 with free shipping. I'll see if he will go any lower. This will be bought before the RAM/PSU because it's not everyday I'll be able to get it at ~$290 instead of $350

Lol thanks. Just edited the bottom of my post above yours if it matters. Just some info about the SSD.

If anyone knows of a 1.8" uSata to 2.5" Sata enclosure and a 2.5" Sata to 3.5" Sata enclosure could you let me know?
Or a 1.8" uSata to 3.5" Sata.

I've got 3 HDD slots open (and 4 5.25" bays) in the end. I can mount a 2.5" drive on the bottom of the case, though. Just trying to think of options and it's good to have an enclosure ready to buy, should I need one. I'll probably mount the SSD in the 2.5" spot on the case, then put the 300GB VR in a padded 3.5" enclosure in the drive bay along with 2 1TB HDDs. I have no idea what the hell I'm going to do with so much space. xD

Not sure where I'm gonna mount the pump yet, though... I suppose I can drill 4 holes and mount the pump on the bottom.

Ebay account was suspended. This time I'm clueless as to why.

Just bought my PSU, some OCZ RAM (6GB 1600mhz), a temporary Radeon 5570, and some LCS parts(res, tubing, coolant, pump, fittings).

So change of plans. Just cooling the GPU/CPU because it'll save a ton of money and I'm actually running out of room in my massive case. I'd never fit another rad in here.

Pics up probably Thursday. PSU coming Monday, and my last water cooling stuff coming Tuesday or Wednesday (needed last minute parts).

Gonna try to get early birthday presents from my parents and grandparents to get more of this built. Gonna sell my laptop for another $800ish soon, too. I need maybe another $1900ish. Not sure, I'll have to recalculate.

HELLO WORLD FROM MY NEW DESKTOP.

I'd like to give a special thanks to FOOKz who suggested air heating the tubing (I used my heatgun on low [300C]) to fit it over the 1/2" barbs. That gets this up and running till Wednesday.
I had a little problem with the rad at first, though. When I drilled one of the mounting holes a bit bigger, I chipped a hole in one of the water lines. A little solder sealed that up, though.

The thing is amazing. CPU runs between 29-35C idle (depending on program used to read it).
I'll take more pics next week and just upload them to the gallery.

My RAM shows up as 1066MHz instead of 1600MHz. I read that other people have that problem with this RAM too. Using CPU-Z and SIW, it says it's running at 533MHz.

WHY. Am I supposed to OC the RAM so that it runs at the designed speed?
Or is it because it's running at about 1.5V and it's rated for 1600MHz at 1.65V?

So it's been on for about an hour and 45 minutes, and my screen keeps flickering on/off. I'm using my TV.

It's becoming more and more frequent. WHAT THE :censored:. Is it the driver?! The card?! My TV?!

Restarted it. No signal...

BIOS said OC'ing failure? I didn't OC though. Loading BIOS defaults and it gives a signal on my TV again. I used a VGA monitor to get a signal to get to the BIOS.

That was weird...

I had that problem awhile back.  I was using a vga adapter on a dvi cable to hook to my monitor. ya i know (noobish).  So i went out and spent like $20 and got me an actual dvi cable and now it works perfect.  That will also happen if you overclocked your video card to much.  So its gotta be a bad cable, or bad overclock.

Are all of the settings on the new hardware stock? Cuz you may have the wrong drivers if they are stock. (I'm not an expert, but im sure the recommended settings for your hardware should have no problem.)

In ways people show off something to flaunt how powerful they are; for example fame, hobbies, or skills, in this case its to show off how much money he has since everything costs so much! Its like having a fancy car or a big house, so why not have a computer that can completely own anything out there?

Its a normal human being trait...

It's a misconception. If you refer to official Intel docs and the site, it's a Core i7 CPU.

I'll take pics when my computer works again.

My processor died on me. No clue why. I restarted the computer after installing a driver and then it wouldn't boot.
It boots fine when the CPU power plug is unplugged. =/
My friend is going to get the processor replaced.

In the mean time, I'm taking money out of my savings to buy a new processor. Either an i7 920 or the next one up.
Parents won't let me buy a 980x because it's too expensive and I don't have enough to put back in the bank just yet.

Although, there's a very high chance that I'll be allowed to take money out and buy a GTX 480 along with the new CPU. Hopefully I can find one of the EVGA water cooled ones.

Edit:
Also, my monitors come in tomorrow. Dual 24" 1920x1080 monitors.
Doesn't do me any good since my processor committed suicide.

I'll have pics up as soon as I can get them onto my comp from my phone (BT isn't transferring correctly).

And, yeah I read the x58 chipset (i7 CPUs) can support up to, I think, like 48 PCIe 16x connections.

I also emailed Intel about a sample i7 980x to review for AcidMods, but they said they only provide samples to OEMs for testing/reviewing. I knew that was coming.

Also this. I'm still trying to get a 3rd monitor working. I specifically bought this card because it had native VGA/HDMI/DVI instead of VGA/DP/DVI so I could use my 3 monitors... but it's still not working.

with that spare pcie u should get a pciex16 ssd and put ur os on it. ive heard awesomely scary things on how fast the read and write speeds. there was a site my friend at school found some with about 500 read and write speed. for about 150-250.
Title: Re: My computer build
Post by: PspKicks316 on April 03, 2010, 10:00:13 AM
Show me one for that price and I'm sold. The cheapest I've seen (and only PCI-e cards I've seen) are the OCZ Z-Drive cards. They use the x8 slot. My 3 slots can run at 16-16-8 which is perfect for SLI/XFire and a SSD.

I'm now completely torn on a graphics card. Radeon HD 5870 for multiple monitor gaming, or a GTX480 for single/dual monitor gaming?
For 3 monitors I'd need a second GTX480...
Title: Re: My computer build
Post by: jacobia jacob on April 03, 2010, 06:57:51 PM
why not a 5970? also I think i remember reading something about the 5000 series cards not being able to display on 3 monitors without using the display port output (meaning you can't just use HDMI, dvi, and vga). so that could be your problem. I'm hearing mixed things about whether or not an active display port adapter will work with eyefinity. so as much as it would suck, you might have to use the dp output.
Title: Re: My computer build
Post by: PspKicks316 on April 03, 2010, 07:15:55 PM
My card can't support it. You're right it HAS to use a DP port for the last display.

And no 5970 because I don't have that kind of money. $500 limit; that's the price of a GTX480 (which I want).

I think I'll go GTX480 for single monitor gaming and then have a 5850 for triple monitor gaming.
Sooo overkill.

With that kind of thinking we'd never have the systems we have today. On the other hand we are powering through a limited number of resources and at some point it's all going to run out.

wanna blame someone. blame the porn industry and the gaming industry

Gaming yes, but actually better systems are driven largely by competition between companies as well as high-performance computing. Steve Jobs commented that when he was in the computer business he hoped that competitors wouldn't come out with a faster, more powerful system before he did. But in Pixar he always hopes for a newer, faster computer so that he can take advantage of all the processing power.

Gaming largely drives advances in graphics board technology, not much else, really.

So...my reservoir decided to shatter today and dump close to 250mL of coolant over my computer.

I didn't find out till night when I went to swap power supplies.

My hard drive is running slow. I'm worried. I'm on air cooling now... probably gonna sell my LCS stuff and stick with air cooling for good.
