It turns out that all those fantasies of looking through walls (and other things) may soon become a reality. How? I hear you ask. The answer lies with two things: Terahertz Radiation and Meta Materials. Terahertz Waves 101: these waves are close to radio waves and microwaves in the electromagnetic spectrum, and have similar properties to x-rays, yet with a much lower chance of death (pretty much nonexistent). They can penetrate objects up to a certain density (depending on wavelength), commonly they are used to scan people going through airports to pick up firearms, drugs, and explosives. Metamaterials are able to act as 'pixels' in various applications. The most recent of these was an 'invisibilty cloak' which took pictures of the background and copied it onto a layer of these 'pixels'. Where can you preorder them? Unfortunately more like when. The technology is currently limited to a large-scale process with heavy machinery. This is due to the power of the beams being projected. The glasses themselves are very complex and could take years to design to a small enough scale, and even then, it may still look like a Visual Boy strapped to your head. The true limiting factor is the fact that not enough and not powerful enough terahertz beams can be emitted from a feasibly sized device. And then there's the issue of power, too. Well guys, keep on dreaming... Maybe one day. Just remember this famous statement: "In the future, computers may weigh no more than 1.5 tons" Source: Engadget May 07, 2010, 07:35:42 PM by aquatsr
Views: 2541 | Comments: 3 The Battle Between Disc and Disk by, aquatsr Ever wonder why all the new consoles (sans handhelds) have disc-based (CD, DVD) media? To answer that question we have to go back to the 90s, when Sony first proposed a disc-accessory for the classic Super Nintendo gaming system. Of course, Nintendo denied the offer, and Sony went on to develop another cherished console, the PSOne. Not to be outdone, Nintendo came out with another disk-based (read: cartridge) platform similar to the Super Nintendo, the fantastic N64. The Nintendo 64 was, and is, a great console. With classics such as Mario 64, Starfox 64, 007 Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and more, it's easy to see why the N64 was such a big success. The N64 had just one big drawback. Compared to disc-based systems, disk-based systems offered much less storage. To put it in less confusing terms, CD and DVD media offered much more storage capacity than traditional cartridge media. At the time, non-volative Flash memory was expensive, fast, and limited in capacity. In contrast CDs and DVDs dropped in price, were slower, and offered huge capacity increases. Hence all consoles, including Nintendo's, ended up using CD and DVD formats for games, with the N64 being the last console to use cartridges for game distribution. The situation is in prime position to change once again. Some people may say that physical media itself will disappear. Already Sony has games available for download from their online store, and Nintendo has the Wii Shop Channel, which provides a similar function. The Internet as the primary media distribution platform is very enticing to distributors since it cuts their costs for physical media to nothing, and allows a wider range of people (global) that have access to the same exact content. ... The latest update for the PS3(v3.21) was not exactly the most popular update Sony has put out considering it removed the feature to install another OS onto the system. The "security" update appears so unpopular in fact, that a class action lawsuit has been filed against Sony... May 05, 2010, 11:26:06 PM by Spriche | Views: 3503 | Comments: 2

Views: 3611 | Comments: 0 New Apple Developer Mandate May Land Company in Hot Water by, aquatsr Long playing the underdog up against behemoths, Apple may have to taste a bit of what it's been fighting against since before the popularity of the iPod and iPhone. Due to a new rule from Apple that states developers for the App Store only use Apple Development tools, the U.S. Federal government is looking into whether this merits an antitrust investigation. Most developers write a piece of code for a certain hardware and then change parts of it, often using intermediary software, in order for it to run on a separate device. Apple's new declaration, in essence, ensures that applications meant for the App Store are developed on an exclusive basis. in other words, an individual is not allowed to use an non-Apple tools to write a piece of software that ad ultimatum will run on an iPhone, iPad or iPod. This seems to be in response to Adobe's attempt to get Flash onto Apple's devices, for which Apple and Steve Jobs have repeatedly (and somewhat viciously) denied. Packager for iPhone would have let people use Flash development tools in order to make apps for the iPhone (and related devices) without actually using Flash. The recent missive from Apple prohibiting outside development tools may be aimed squarely at Adobe, a company whose market share fell 2% when Jobs attacked the company and forcefully stated that Apple would never support Flash. ...
