An X-FI soundcard, and a way to hooke them up, be far easier to get some like $150 Logitech Surround speakers, and the cheapest X-FI

You would need at least 6 speakers for 5.1 surround sound (front left, front center, front right, back left, back right and a sub woofer). I'm guessing you don't have a sub woofer, you would also need a sound card that supports 5.1 channel audio.(take and X-FI for example like Matt said) Then you would have to make sure the speaker cables are long enough. If you don't want to spend money on an X-FI just get a Dynex brand one from best buy. They cost like $20 and the audio is good for the price.

the 3.5mm jack (used foe headphones etc) provides stereo sound, not 5.1 or what ever

not for surround. all you would be able to achieve would be multiple right and left speakers.

Ok, I have the same kinda question.
On the back on my pc i have 5 3.5mm socket things which I can attach surround sound speakers to. If I just bought 5 speakers can I just plug them into the sockets so I get surround sound. I presume this is going to be a yes, but the main thing is to get them working for my PS3. how do I get surround sound from the PS3? I am thinking i need to use the av socket and try to get the different sounds out of it. Would a component work as that has 6 plugs to it (1 is for video???)

A PC Surround set will have the correct plugs to plug into a PC, to connect it to a PS3, you need a Home Theatre kit, 2 different products, and i dont think one exists that would work for both.

Component is Blue - Video / Green - Video / Red - Video / White - Audio / Red - Audio

ah i see, thanks for the help.
I guess the only way to get surround sound is to use the optical cable  :eyebrow:
