PSP GAME HELP

hi i've been playing driver 1 (a ps1 game on my psp) and the entire game works perfectly except for when yo fail a mission or retry a mission. the screen fades out like it should and it is meant to show the driver laoding screen and restart the mission but it freezes, the screen goes black and the psp is unresponsive for about 10 mins after which it turns off by itself. i turn it back on and it everything works fine again except for when you restart a mission.
im running 3.90m33-2 on a phat psp.
any ideas on what could be causing this?

you could try running the game in an earlier version through popstation or popsloader or something....
