External HDD - Yes, it has USB ports
RAM - Not sure about that model. Some models have the RAM soldered in.

Soldered in is permanent. Well, unless you want to desolder the chips and solder new ones on...I have the feeling it's the physical chips soldered on, not the stick.
I'm not sure whether that one has them soldered or not. Don't know how to tell either.

This machine works fine, if you know how to run Linux. It comes with I believe Xandros, which is horrible in my opinion but I guess it is easier for those who have never run a Linux distro. I put Ubuntu 8.04 (...) on it and installed an extra 1GB of RAM, works great even with CompizFusion. I recommend getting an external hard drive to store your files on, with that said, its worth the [price]. I take this everywhere with me and use it for research purposes at my university to access databases and store documents.
