Yeah. I made an external module to plug into the RJ11 jack on any Guitar Hero guitar. I personally used my new GH:WT guitar for it.

*edit*
TEASER VIDEO:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MkLedFVn0ww

Quote
This is just a teaser video, I'll have the guitar hero video up tonight.
This is only to show the module size, use, etc. and the rest will be up later on once I've fixed up my guitar(s).

Yes, I know it's CoD4. Yes, I'm expecting comments on that.
The reason I used this game to show the use off for STARTERS, is because when played CoD4 with the guitar, the player automatically looks to the right continuously. When the Auto-Whammy is plugged in, the player "shakes" back and forth because he is now trying to look to the right(in pulses) and continuously to the left.

You might not be able to see the "shaking" occurring, but it's there. In real life, it's much faster and noticeable. In the vid it's less frequent, but that's because of my piece of crap camera.

Size comparison to a regular AA battery:

Guitar Hero 3 guitar Auto-Whammy tutorial
Sorry about the crappy quality pics sorta. *CLICK PICS FOR FULL SIZE*

Part 1: Modding the Guitar Hero 3 guitar

Step1: Wiring the board
You're gong to take apart the whole guitar body, down to the main board. Flip over the board, and on the pins for the long connector you'll see +V, WH, and -V.
Wire 1 wire to each of these pins, keeping track of which wire is which.

Step2: Prepping the jack
All you're doing here is cutting the 2 traces for the jack.

Step3: Wiring the jack
Looking at the jack oriented the way I have it in the picture, you're going to wire it up like this:
N/A     WH
     -V       +V

That is, the pins farther away from you: Left is blank and right is WH. The pins closer to you, left is -V and right is +V.

Step4: The finished guitar
You're DONE. Just put the guitar back together and move on the the next part.

Part 2: The Whammy module

Step1: The connector
Just get any ordinary RJ11 cable that has all of the middle pins. Preferably get a 6pin cable. It's a fax cable, in case you didn't know.
There's 6 pins, the ones we're using are in bold here, so make sure your cable has those:
- - - - - -

Step2: The guitar jack
This really isn't a step, but really just a picture of how the jack is wired up right now, for reference reasons I guess.

Step3: Shaving the connector
At this point, what you're going to do is just shave down the little clip on the top of the connector so it's nice and smooth.

Step4: The wires
Here's a pic of the 6 wires for my cable. You're going to want to (IF YOU HAVE A 6 PIN) cut the far left wire, and the 2 far right wires.

Step5: The Whammy module
This is just a basic TLC555CP rapidfire module, the same as if it was in a controller. To make one, follow one of the MANY tuts on here. Be careful, as there's tuts for the CMOS 555 and the TLC555, which are different. One of the many tuts can be found right HERE.(Note: You do NOT need any potentiometers or the transistor for this...or a switch)

Step6: Wiring to the connector
Pretty basic, wire the left wire to +, the middle wire to trigger on the 555, and the right wire to GND.

Don't know. I've never seen anything out there. And looking inside the controller, 2 of the pins are shared with the sync button o_O

Tutorial for the Guitar Hero 3 guitar is up now. Tut for the GH:WT guitar is coming tomorrow. It's basically the same.

Video coming tomorrow sometime, either before or after my friends get here/leave. Lol.
Tell me what you think, any improvements, the usual. :D

And in case any of you are wondering, you're allowed to double post for updates.

why??? this port was made for a foot pedal that Microsoft dropped because most people don’t care about the whammy. this is going to make every note distort with the whammy. please explain the point. I have the guitar hero games and I don’t believe you get extra points fo using the whammy. the only thing being accomplished her is distorted music.

however, nice initiative on your part to think of something completely useless, I hope you had fun building this. you do know Google has many listings for the use of this jack? did you know if you look hard enough you can find a foot pedal that’s been modified to work with the guitar and you don’t have to open the guitar. that port is made for power supply and whammy input, why are you cutting traces? whatever, LOL have fun

Uhm, screw you?
Get out of my thread if you don't have anything nice to say.

Maybe I wanted to make this? Ever think of that?
There's TWO TRACES on the gh3 guitar jack. TWO. That will NOT provide power and whammy.
I don't care what you say about this, just shut up and butt out if you don't like it.

@modded matt:
dude, the best way to gain star power is with the whammy. wiggling it back and forth during a glowing blue note will gain it faster, the 555 simulates someone pushing the whammy bar back and forth. and yes it does gain points, not all notes will sound distorted either numbnuts, only longer ones and its a varying distortion, if he boosts the transition speed it might not even be noticable.

awesome work kicks.
It's been a long time

Wait, I'm kind of confused.

This lets your whammy move back and forth really fast?

You know, no one appreciates anything but the "big mods" anymore. You've really got to WOW everyone to get even the slightest bit of positive feedback. I'm not posting a video, there's no point to it. TUT DOWN. PM me if you want it, but don't act like a :censored: like some people.

OH by the way modded matt. Have you noticed that most of the mods on this site are completely useless? LEDs don't do ANYTHING to the console/controller/etc. yet people are always doing that. Yet, when I do one mod that you may think is useless, but it actually serves a purpose, you yell at me and flame? Go to hell.

i agree 100% kicks. moddedmatt you just need to GTFO, kicks did this, and was successful. its not modding if you just make something for a plug thats already there. It seems now days you have to program a micro processor and add 400 LEDs and an LCD panel into a damn coffee cup and turn it into a full blown computer, just to get a "eh thats pretty cool i guess"

The one I used was slightly bigger than the regular controller bit. So, I'm guessing it's just the next size up. I don't know the controller size either, because I just use my special screwdriver from a faceplate or the bits in my box. I've got the Zoozen Pro Access Toolkit V2. =]
