Versitile Cardrige-Load Mods ideas...
« on: March 20, 2009, 11:44:38 PM »
Ok, I am willing to bet I am not the first person to come up with this idea, but I MIGHT be the first to actually sit down and MAKE it work out!  Simple concept.  All that needs to be done, is have a modified UMD door, and remove the UMD drive!

Details:

Mods would be varried, and would be in the form of a "drop-in" or cartridge-style loading system.  Same idea as loading a UMD disc, but it would be a solid cartridge, containing a specific mod or set of mods that the user wants to use at that time.  At the bottom, around the right side of the PSP, where the right set of home row buttons are, is where the motherboard does NOT go.  There is a pretty big gap there.  It would contain a set of solid, permenantly mounted, spring-loaded contact pins, similar to what is used in most home cordless handsets.  The receiver has 2 or 3 spring loaded contacts that the phone sits on to charge.  There would be 11 of them.  There hardwired outputs would be:

1.   Left speaker +
2.   Left speaker -
3.   Right speaker +
4.   Right speaker -
5.   Ground (common)
6.   Ground (isolated, or power dependent)
7.   3.6 volt + (common)
8.   3.6 volt + (isolated, or power dependent)
9.   5.0 volt + (isolated)
10.  WIFI switch IN
11.  WIFI switch OUT
12.  Full set of MS slot pins, wired to its own set of contacts

With these contacts, all someone has to do, is make their own cartridge, and use whatever pins they want to, and build their mods into it.  This mod would allow anything from dual memory cards, to custom jewel lighting, double spare battery pack, and more.

If your interested in helping me make this a reality, let me know.  It WILL involve buying parts, and possibly shipping stuff back and forth for extra help when needed.

Cool concept.

There's gonna be a lot to what you want to do but by all means do it.

I get the idea, but in order for this to really work well in terms of light mods, is the lights that you want at any time would already have to be in the PSP.

But good luck dude.

That part would be true.  But if you install LEDs in the rest of the PSP where you want them, then it can be up to the cartridge to change the pattern, how they react, and which ones to use or not to use.

This is just a preliminary idea, physical modding will happen in about 2 weeks, when my parts arrive.

I dont know about that.  I am pretty good at making stuff to you might be surprised.  I have already begun building the contacts but have not mounted them yet.  There is still some work to be done that I cant do without the parts that I ordered offline.

coming from the guy who has done simple mods to a psp and already want to do an external psx controller..

to arkman, its a cool concept, but it sounds like more work to build this cartridge system than to actually do the mods.

Sure, it sounds like work.  But think about this.  Where would most of the work actually come into play?  Building the cartridge?  Think about this.  Where can you get something a bit smaller than the size of the UMD door, at practically a dime a dozen?  One thought is a gameboy cartridge.  Premade, small, already has contacts (LOTS of them), and a board that can be cut and used as the connection to other things.  If you want more room, stack 2 of them back to back, and attach the cartidges together, and you have more space.

That what I see a lot of people doing on their mods.  They think too DEEP.  The best answer is almost ALWAYS the simplist.  Dont be picky.  Start with things that dont normally go together and see if it will "come close" to fitting.  Just go from there.  I had NO idea that the laptop fan I used would EVER be able to fit.  I just started cutting, without thinking too much about how it would fit, and things just lined up from there.  These mods, at least for me, are really not as hard as they sound.  Its kinda like magic tricks.  Its looks awsome to spectators, but when you see HOW the trick was done, you almost want to kick yourself for believing that there is no "real" way it could have been done.

The using a cartridge to control some mods just seems "extra"

The one application I see, would be to use it for prototyping, such as see what combinations of electronic parts give the most desired effect, say for a sound reactive mod.

I'm wondering or trying to picture how would this so called cartridge would look like?  Have u done some sketching on a paper?  Also, where and how would it be attached to the PSP?

Try buying a DS cart shell.

There you go guys.  Simple thinking.  And a good point.  The size of the DS cartridge would make it possible to put in at least 2, so you could have a couple mods at once.  You could hot-swap drop-in jewels and such as well with this.

Don't feel bad.

I'm relatively sure I'll hit -20 before I get a positive point lol.

Is there a way to tell who gave you a good or bad point?  (and are there any real rules behind giving them?

Nah no rules... Some ppl hate your g uts and you end up with lots of negatives. Turns out, I'm really good at offending people, thus. my -16 rating. Anyway, this could be cool, but you got any good uses for this on your mind? Only thing i can think of is testing different combos with SR leds, but even so u will need to make lots of carts.

I would not need too many carts, just the ones that I would personally use.  Like a lighted jewel (SR), data display, powered speakers, or extra battery pack.  (I would not really expect this mod to make it past myself.  Doubt anyone would be interested in it, so I am just doing this for myself.  (hance, not totally universal)

Ah, i see. But woulfnt it be easier just to wire everything up internally and just add switches?

hard to have speakers, and a jewel, and other things all at once.  Just not enough room.  Even I would have a hard time making room.  lol

speakers and jewels would be built into the carts.  And with this, you could have, for example, a cart that has two speakers in it, and a curved plastic jewel (in whatever shape you want), with custom LEDs in it.  Kinda like what you see in some of the high end car stereo trunk installs you see at car shows.  Another could have nothing more than a lighted jewel in it, that takes up the whole area.  Another could have four speakers in it, but no jewel, and could be a "stealth" install (looks as close to a regular UMD door as possible, but with vent holes for the speakers)
