whats the best method for painting chrome? like the back of an ipod. i have a project in mind but im bad with painting stuff
Is this how you do it?
1. Sand down till chrome is gone
2. Primer it *idk how many coats*
3. Paint a certain color
4 Recoat it with the color again
5. if i want clear i will clear coat it *2-3 coats*
and what paint do i use? the chrome on an ipod isnt plastic so i cant use krylon
You don't need to sand if you use a metal spray paint, like certain types of Kyrlon says "no primer required" which is what I bought. I have actually painted my ipod myself and sanding does nothing on that type of metal except make it feel rough which even still feels rough after you pant, sanding the ipod case metal is a bad idea. Just give 2 thin/medium coats of paint, then seal it twice, 3 times is overkill.
If you use Krylon you only have to wait 45-60 min for each coat to dry, waiting a whole day don't make a difference. But I suggest sitting it outside to dry, over sitting it in your garage. It's faster to sit it outside and works well. Then after your 2 coats of paint and dry give the sealer about 2 hours to dry it will make a really strange white coat if you apply too much/spray too close on the first coat, same will happen for second coat so be careful. Also for painting, it may seem like your wasting paint but spray about a foot away it makes a VERY nice EVEN coat which is important. I highly suggest you get Satin finish for an ipod, gloss looks really out of place and flat is just bad looking. Satin is just perfect for an ipod.
Hope this helps bro and good luck!
Just don't cheap out and get the generic brand of paint OR sealer, buying a good brand like Kryolon makes a WORLD of difference on the finished product.
Also if you decide to use gloss it takes longer to dry, if you touch it before the gloss dries it will leave a permanent ugly smudge on it. I just say no gloss paint for an ipod.
