Considering I STILL can't post in suggestions and improvement, do NOT move this thread, please.

Okay so it's like this. Everyone's complaining about them, blah blah blah. I have the solution.
What we need is a pseudo subscription membership. Robin, I'm not sure the smf mod but I know it's possible. We have it like this; Someone donates $5 through the paypal link, and you turn off all advertisements for that member for ONE month only. Once that month is up, the member needs to donate again to remove them.

To do this, I guess make a usergroup titled "Donators" or something, but don't make it visible/shown. Set this usergroup so that there's no advertisements for them. Next part is tricky: Get an smf mod or something that moves a user into that usergroup but only for 30 days and then takes away that usergroup from them. It's totally possible, but I'm not sure how to do it.

What do you think?

It kinda is, but the way I see it people will stop complaining and if a lot of people actually want this, then we'll get enough money for the server faster =D

he wanting to get on a much better server but its not cheap so

I cant imagine how bad it sucks for Dhruv.

But i like this idea. I see alot of other forums doing this lately and i think after a while people will start pouring in to donate. Do it, theres not much to lose.

ill admit i like the idea
but sitting here thinking about it
yea the people who pay will enjoy their lag free acidmods
but what about the people who sign up and then see how laggy it is for them
they are not as home here as alot of us
and so they wont feel the need to dow out 5 bucks
small i know but still

the only way i could see this work is if we get enough income to pay for the server and therefor id have to say that it would be lag free for everyone and thus we wont have as many unhappy / people who dont like the site because of the lag prob
a lil bit for the greater good

but thats my take on it

ok guys i have a rough timeframe now for when we will be moving from our shared hosting to a dedicated server and that is by the end of august i hope.

and its funny you should say this kicks as me and chives were discussing it the other night after we had the problems. and we were throwing round ideas and prices and some of the ideas we had (not definite) are no ads, online hosting of small personal html sites and thus a small area for storing files, donator badges, possible discounts from products, some additional forum features maybe, and maybe a random giveaway of something every 3-6 months only for those who donate and possibly a few other bits and bobs. but there just ideas for now. also it would be all tied into the forum so you would pay through the forum using paypal and automatically get added to the donators and then after each month if not paid you will be removed and there would be a cheeper price for a yearly subscription type thing.

also for those who are interested here are the proposed specifications of the new server. it aint cheap but it will last and it is needed for us to move forward.

yeh it should also allow me to run server modules that will make the gallery and site more powerful and more streamlined. and allow me to use acceleration and caching on the forums which will really speed stuff up

I have an idea for the new people to somewhat getthem interested into pitching in 5 bucks for the server, allow a free say 15 day membership. Or an alternative, something like deviant art has, after say ten pages of browsing show a page dedicated to an add for ten seconds or so then bak to acidmods. This way it's not in the way and works a lot better

Cant users just turn off auto reloading in there browsers? making the reloading stuff useless.
