[PS3][alman101] PulseVU 2X chip and 104 LEDs ((finished))
« on: August 13, 2009, 11:43:03 PM »
Iight so I'm using my PS3, I've been looking to do the PulseVU mod in my PS3 for a awhile, and this seems like a perfect time to waste money lol.
I won't be having any functionality mods since it is a PS3, pretty much only cosmetic mods.
I have put some LEDs in it before, 8 blue LEDs that underline the Playstation 3 logo, and kind of looked bad, and tried to put my old PulseVU in, but fried it since it can only take 5volts and not 12volts like I did last time. I didn't read the install instructions about voltages and I paid that price lol.
I'll rip the 8 LEDs out on saturday (15th), and ill show you what it used to looks like before.

A lil about me. I'm a 18 year old from Canada. Yes, your northern neighbours. I am on summer vacation so I will prob be done this mod in day(s) or when ever I get the parts. Been doing mods for a few years, mostly computer related or PS3 controllers. Have done about 20 DualShock3 LED mods, 10 SIXAXIS LED mods, 4 Rapid Fire mods and one 3-mode Rapid Fire mod (COD5).

Gonna order a new chip and the LEDs off ebay soon....

Post Merge: August 14, 2009, 01:37:53 PM

Here of some of the controllers I've done for myself and some local clients (its always fun doing house calls and people saying, "You're the guy?" lol, since I look young still)

My Christmas Themed Custom Controller
(its a SIXAXIS shell with DualShock3 internals, yes I did remove rumble, I played a year without it before the dualshock3 even came out so I prefer NO RUMBLE!!)

Laser LEDs in a SIXAXIS (clients)

Here are some pics of what my PS3 looks like before...

Went ahead and ordered another 100 LEDs for a total of 200 on the way! I calculated around 150 LEDs if I keep my original design. Putting 9 LEDs in my controller right now. 8 blue LEDs and a red laser for the PS button. Should be done tonight or tomorrow...

Controller is done and looking mint in the dark. Here are some pics of the controller from start to finish...

Drill some holes

Glue LEDs in

Put the LASER LED in and wire it up

Wire the blue side LEDs

Test them out

Wire the other side

Test those out

Put it back together and WWAALLLLLAAA!!!!

This beauty will look great with the PS3 when it's done. 9 LEDs in a DualShock3 takes tons of patience and around 4 hours of your time lol. EEENNNJJJOOOYYY......

"The power supply can operate on both 60 Hz and 50 Hz power grids. It uses a standard C14 IEC connector and a C13 power cord appropriate for the region it is being used in. The power supply is capable of delivering approximately 380W, although the PS3 has never been measured using this much power.

Japanese PS3 models produced since 2007 are capable of delivering 280W of power, in part due to the energy efficiency of the newer 65 nm-based cell processors."

Got the LEDs

Making some room for mods, took out the media card reader (pretty much never ever used)

Running 2 USB cords to power everything, hope I don't blow the PSU

They both run at 5.14volts stable

Ran them through

Will have some more progress soon...

Time to get the PulseVU 2X chip in the PS3....

The chip itself up close, need to solder 7 little wires

Wires soldered on the chip and put in its pernament home, a bread board
L1 and L2 are unused because this chip was specifically designed to be used in a XBOX360. You use those two connectors in the 360 only.

Strapped to the PS3. I used electrical to make sure I don't short out anything, that would be really bad lol. I admit I did go a bit crazy with it tho

Both USB cables connected and we now have power

So the PulseVU 2X chip is finally in and next I will be modding the front panel to put in the 2 swtiches. 1st is a lever switch to change mods, 2nd is a on/off switch to change between PULSE mode and FADER mode.
More progress tonight or tomorrow.... lookin clean so far

Got some progress for tonight, mounted the lever and on/off switches in the front media bay. If you go back I took out the card reader for a reason lol.
Used a hot glue gun to secure each switch in, they aint going anywhere lol

Here are the wires I soldered in on the inside

Tested it out in FADER mode, works good with 4 LEDs

So thats my little update for the night. Tomorrow is suppose to be a crappy day here in the north so I'll have more progress tomorrow night. Should start drilling the LED holes and figure out the audio outputs I'm gonna use. I have a new design idea for the front panel LEDs so check back in soon!!!!!!!!

So heres my design, thought it would look good...

So I did some drilling and this is what it looks like

Covered the blu-ray drive and PSU with some electrical tape so I don't short out anything

The LEDs ill be installing tonight

Pics of the install

Putting the green Positive wires in

Then the pink Negative wires in

I put it back together to see what it looks like and here it is

So next I'm gonna tackle the PS logo I drilled out which is 78 LEDs. I only put in 26 tonight in the Playstation 3 writing. Its gonna be a few days most likely, took 5 hours to do what I did tonight.

Check back soon.....

THIS IS GONNA LOOK SICK

You prolly won the mod-off  :#1:

Well I dunno its still pretty earlier in the competition and some entries look crazy. Some how I knew I would be the lonely PS3 lol. It pains me to think about putting 78 LEDs in there. Its gonna be days, it took me 5 hours to put 26 LEDs in, it will be at least 15 hours of work to do the PS logo. Its might drive me crazy lol, I'm putting in the audio source in today so I should have that taken care of by tonight, then the PS logo is the last thing I need to do.....

That sounds great. But I game with my Bose Headset so I use analog for audio anyway, I use HDMI with the 24" Dell. I'm gonna use an audio splitter to get the signal to the headset and pulse chip.

Ya I learned that, I put another piece on the LEDs themselves and that fixed the problem. New update in an hour, just waiting on the vid to upload. HD vids take forever to upload lol

K so did something today, I got the audio to the Pulse chip so that is working 100%.

I used an old pair of broken headphones and cut it up till I got this...

I use my Bose Headset to game so I had to use a splitter to put the audio signal to the Pulse chip also, heres a vid of the PulseVU 2X strutting its stuff.

Acidmods Contest - Part 5 Audio Source installed

K so that vid was only with the 26 LEDs in. The PS logo and 78 LEDs is the last thing on the list to do, I cannot wait to see it pulse to the music!!!!!!

I'm speechless. I don't know how to respond to this.

Also, you're wiring in series. Wire in parallel instead so they're all the same brightness. As you can see from the picture of the 2 lines of leds, the left side (furthest from input source) is dimmer, even by a little.

No its because the case is curved in the front, its not flat. Thats why they look dimmer, but they are actually all the same. Go look at a PS3 and you can see the front is curved.

Iight so I started the biggest pain in the butt of the project, the PS logo.

So heres the pic of the logo with the holes drilled

:faint: It hurts me to look at this photo (78 LEDs)   :faint:

A few of the LEDs in

Heres half the S part completed (18 LEDs)

And heres it lit up so far....

Thats it for today, I knew it would take 2-3days to finish it. I put 3 hours of work in today, plus an hour of thinking how the hell I'm gonna wire everything. Finally got the idea of thinking the LEDs are in lines. Don't ask how but I did it some how, and even surprised myself lol. Will do the other half of the S tomorrow which is 22 LEDs, and maybe start the P, depends when I get back from fishin in the mornin.  im out pce....
