Well, yeah. Driver support for 64 bit OS's is terrible.

really? i've been running 64 bit since an year without any issues at all. PS: xp 64 bit is the worst thing ever. use windows 7 64 bit if you want a true 64 bit experience because when xp 64 bit came out, 64 bit wasn't much popular/ widely used so very less things will work properly on it.

thanks chase for this sig =)

I use XP Pro x64 SP2 at school and it runs without a hitch. We have 8.00 GB of RAM installed (really pointless, Inventor needs 3 at most) and the x64 utilizes all of it

And RAM has nothing to do with what a program wants. You're not going to get 3GB just because Inventor needs 3GB.

Considering the computers aren't going to be i5 or i7 based, they're going to use Dual Channel RAM.
That means all 4 sockets will be using 1GB or 2GB sticks. The school wouldn't be stupid an buy 4GB of RAM, and you can't do 6GB of RAM. At least, not productively.

Even with apple os x leopard 64 bit (which I also run),it's still very hard to find software for my devices for 64 bit.Drivers for things like peripherals are fine, but for my music production equipment (mixing desks,keyboard,I/O devices etc.) are still messed up.

Overall I'm going to leave 64 bit alone for a few years until it's been adopted properly.Although I heard with windows 7 64 bit you can use 32 bit drivers in compatability mode 0.o

Plus, when it comes to RAM your program will probably be using a lot of virtual memory rather than all the physical RAM, since some of the physical RAM is allocated to run the OS and associated programs.

99% of my drivers work fine in 64 bit windows 7. if ati would just get there crap together it would be perfect. then again i'm not using any crazy music equipment so maybe it would be different for you.

Ya, I'm kinda surprised, I'm not had anything weird happen with my 64bit WIN7 install.  Any specific issues?

Wait. What's wrong with 64 bit ATI drivers?

The 5000 line cards crash still. supposedly they are working on it. most of the time its fine but every once in a while it has a bad streak where i can barely get in 10 minutes of use without a random vertical lines/black screen crash that requires a hard reset. on a positive note I'm getting pretty good at frequently saving everything

maybe you will be one of the lucky few to have a stable system :) its worth it for the extra ram options over 32 bit in my opinion.

All I can say is if you're using it for music production, make sure all of your hardware has 64 bit drivers, and don't buy m-audio equipment as they don't have any 64 bit drivers (unfrotunately I use mostly m-audio).....I had to switch back to 32 bit because I'm not going to go replacing everything in my studio for the sole purpose of it being compatable with 64 bit.
I am jealous of anyone who has a perfectly working 64 bit system running...but at the moment 64 bit isn't for me.
