test your network
« on: July 12, 2010, 09:09:23 PM »
wow, today I purchased a netgear switch for splitting the internet to my pc and xbox. I hooked it up and all went fine. We have extremely slow broadband, today I realized why. I decided to test my old hub against this new switch, turns out the old hub was cutting my potential speed in more than half. I went from an average speed test of 3.54Dl to this

which is a friggen amazing speed compared to what I was used to, so guys my point of this hole thing is, if you have slow internet, check your network components and wiring. I am so happy youtube 1080p loads without buffering, awesome.

You went from a hub to a switch? Yes hubs are old man... Firstly hubs run a half duplex which means that communication is one way your PC is sending or receiving but not at the same time. Also a hub is a single collision domain which means that when data from one port is put on the wire all the other ports broadcast that data whether the device connected to a port requested the data or not. This causes collisions to occur which will also slow down your connection...

Switches on the other hand will operate at full duplex allowing your PC to send and receive at the same time effectively allowing (if you had a 100mb port) 100mb to send and 100mb to receive at the same time, although that's not how ethernet frames work.

Also on a switch each port is its own collision domain so if you had an 8 port switch you would have 8 collision domains -vs- the 1 collision domain you had with the hub (regardless of how many ports it had). Also switches remember Layer 2 information IE your PC's MAC address. Switches use MAC address tables to remember where everyone is.. think of a road map... this way switches know how or what port to pass traffic to...

There is so much more but thats a quick look into hubs and switches...

to clarify it's $30 a month for the first year then it's $60.  So right now I'm paying half ($15) but after the first year it will be $60. The thing is we are running uncapped.   We aren't using comcast's modems, We have our own (unhacked) and since it's not theirs they don't know how to cap the speed so we get everything.   They set it up like that and it's still working great.  :D
