BBOS- Big Brother Over Shoulder
« on: July 29, 2011, 06:56:49 AM »
This is usually the time for a witty comment, but today the news is just sad. It has been coming for a very long time. In a Nineteen to ten vote the first major technology initiative has been passed, after last year’s fall election. Internet Service Providers such a Comcast, Verizon, AT&T and so on will now have to keep logs of all their customers’ online activities.

The original intent for the bill was changed at the very last minute. The changes made now force all ISP’s to keep logs of all online activities for individuals, by including the customer’s name, home address, phone numbers, credit card numbers, bank account numbers, and temporary IP addresses. Now some of the individuals that were voting knew it was wrong for all of this information to be stored. They suggested amending it afterwards so that only IP addresses would be kept in the logs. They lost the vote at seven to sixteen.

Now these logs are just to be kept for a year, and are supposedly only intended for use of the police during criminal investigations. However somebody seems to think having a list of every American’s actions online would be more beneficial to law enforcement.

“It represents "a data bank of every digital act by every American" that would "let us find out where every single American visited Web sites," said Rep. Zoe Lofgren of California, who led Democratic opposition to the bill.”–cNet

Now not only is the bill specific about what information is to be logged, however it also clearly says that commercial ISP’s are the target. Meaning that any criminals can now go hop onto a local internet café’s free wireless to do there illegal activities and be able to do so anonymously while law abiding citizens have their own actions monitored just in case.

Wow, just... wow, I don't even know what to say to this.  I thought the U.S. was the land of the free? So much for that.

I understand the use for this.  But for everybody thats just no. It should be amended so that only individuals such as previously convicted individuals should be monitored. This i feel is a invasion of privacy and Im waiting for the courts stance on this. (unless i missed it)

I second that.  I have heard of this bill, but found no news today saying that it has passed.

Pepsi all the way, lol.  Land of the free, as in freedom, and I don't think taxes take away our freedom, every country has taxes, government couldn't exist without taxes.

I was just being a smartass about the taxes, but any land that is bound by rules, regulations and red tape isn't really free even when the same restrictions are for the good of all. Do you see some people, especially in high places, getting away with actions that you or I would not?(Lindsay Lohan) Exactly. They can. We can't. That's not true freedom, although it is as close to it as we will be allowed to get. Just my opinion.

Anyhoo, I know how you guys get crazy when people get off topic so thats the end of that.

what i have learned from being in Mexico... true freedom does not exist, but American freedom and opportunity are what makes United States so great to other people. Our great constitution is what made this country so great... the bill of rights...  but violating privacy for the sake of security... thats a dooozzy lol

The big picture is the security of the system that holds all this info. The security will fail and people will get their info taken, hopefully its by an honest hacker that does it to prove that they are not safe. Hopefully there will be a supreme court over turn here. Oh and btw there was one web page w an article about this yesterday and it was on cnet. If you think your getting the real news from our media about this , you guys are sadly diluted. No way would they let the general public know of this outrageous breach of our rights as Americans.

no, violating privacy for something that is only an illusion (security) is how you said, a dooozzy. (security really is just an illusion)
