sounds fun. but you have to have something to "filter" the frequencies if i am correct.. instead of it just being sound, they will only light when bass hits. if i am correct that is...

HMMM I wonder, the battery in a car is 12 volts... also depending on the year of the car you have to becareful.. due to drawing power off somewhere lese could cause a major issue... Read your owners manual... alot of the newer cars you can't just splice in to wires cause they use less voltage now days to operate componets in a car and some new cars or trucks have a 24 volt system.

On Newer cars you can't pull power from just anywhere, due to the Radio can can controll so many different things. headlights, volume . change radio stations all from the steering wheel , alot of the newer cars are powered with 5 volts or 3 volts ..all pulse sensors..so you have to be careful now days..

True that some cars use different voltages other than 12, especially really old cars, hybrids, and some new cars use the 5v, ir  higher 24v for greater efficiency. one of the neatest places to pull from a wiring standpoint would be the fuse box and use the provided places for a fuse. if you're going directly off the battery PLEASE make sure that you use an inline fuse. not only can your circuit fry, but can cause a firehazard and screw some stuff up.

Most of the time that steering wheel controls are integrated its just another plug that connects to the back of the factory headunit, just pop it out and you're usually fine. If you're going off of the cig socket they are (almost) always fused in the box with some other hardware (two of my cig outlets, dome ligh, and the cooler for my ac or something like that are on the same circuit, so if the outlet trips they all go out)  I'll checl

Most batteries in cars put out 14.4 V or so While the car is running due to the alternator. You want a regulated 12v line from the fuse box. I have put a few stereos in that era Honda and can tell you that the car has mainly a 12v system and the radio is not part of any other systems in the car.
You should use low level output (rca) for the audio part. RCA jacks on car stereos can vary in voltage output on the low level side. some are as low as 1.5v some higher end stereos output at 5v. 5v being the stronger signal would hit harder.
I used to have 2 neons hitting to the bass in my truck, (before kids) and you will need to find a way to adjust the sensitivity . A variable resistor some where in your circuit will help.
most high amps have a rca pass-through. If you use this be mindful of what frequencies are coming out of it.

Hey, I'm curious what the dealio is with this. Also if you made a low pass filter for it and that sort of thing

Why don't you wire up your lights directly in line with the subs? When the bass hits, the lights hit.
