The xbox 360 disc drive has a security key called the DVD key that is built into the firmware, you must get the DVD key from the old drive and put it onto the new drive.  One option is to use a program called Jungle Flasher to read the key from your old drive, then import the key into your new drive.  Alternately, If you replaced with the same model drive and the circuit board of the old drive is still intact, you could swap the old DVD drive circuit board onto the new drive, which would allow it to work, but it is a lot easier to just read and write the key with Jungle Flasher.

Majic man is correct but when you use jungle flasher you have to extract the orignal firmware off the orignal dvd drive.. If you use the same drive you can flash it with the same firmware... also if you use a different dvd drive say you have a benq drive and want to use say a hitachi or lite on or samsung drive you have to spoof the dvd drive to make it think its the drive you orignally had.. you need more then just  Jungle flasher .

To do this you can use the xbox 360 to power the drive
you will need a longer sata cable to reach from your computer to the dvd drive in the xbox..
you will need a vt6421 chipset  sata controller card there like $10 on ebay
Jungle flasher

depending on the dvd drive you might need a probe for the lite on 74850c drive
as for the 8 or 9 series drives you need  to cut traces..

Hitachi drives after you unlock them you to restore stock firmware

Once you tell me what kind of dvd drive you have i can help further along...

If its a slim drive your better off changing the mobo from one drive to another .  there a little more tricky to do.

simple case if there both the same exact model of dvd drives just tear them both apart until you can reach the pcb board and put in your old board unto the new drive small desoldering and soldering is involved but its easy enough with minor experience and put that sucker back together and test

Well the reason I said the firmware method was easier is because I don't know how experienced you are at soldering.  I haven't followed drive firmware for a while, so I forgot that you may need a probe, or have to cut traces, to get the key.  In that case, it is definitely easier to swap the board.  FYI Rodent, you don't actually have to have the VIA SATA card, it is just the most compatible.  I have used an Intel chipset before without issues.  Some chipsets work better with certain drives also, the VIA card is just the most consistently compatible.

I have intel chip on my mother board doesnt reconize it also x360usb pro works the best :D

Toshiba samsung, and benq  think the lite on you can just unhook the ribbons and swap not sure about hitach's havent done one in a while and the new slims you have to solder some..

If you did buy an identical drive (ex samsung ms28 to replace a samsung ms28 drive) then all you have to do is open both of them up and swap the motherboards.
