SMD 603 LEDS

if the viewing angle is 130 deg and 140 deg do i have to mount them a certain way other than flat for me to see them most effectively?

just lay them flat unless your changing the ROL on your console then they need to be mounted on their side

lay them flat, regardless. the console leds are bi colored with an offest lens. If replacing them with 0603 leds, lay them flat.

im doing my messenger pad, the lenses are water clear and angles range from 130 deg to 150 i think, might be 140s.

try it, lol... The plastic shield is called a diffuser I have done at least 15-20.  I think its hilarious when people make tutorials of how to do something and people take it for granted that that is the only way to do it without understanding why. Take a real good look at the lens on the stock leds. there is a big difference and the reason for that difference is because they are on their side. look at the center led which has a standard lens... which way is it facing...........case closed point made.

take a look at how the stock leds is, compared to 0603 led.... your 15 to 20 ?  i have done over 100  your point made about the diffueser  but look at the stock led  how it works compared to replacing it with 0603 leds 

here is proof... looks tto me like there isnt much of a differcene other then the diffuser is little missed place cause i did this in in the time it took to make the videos... Case Closed Point Made !!!!

Rodent, your videos are irrelevant. your comparing stock leds (which are made to be on their side and have a specific 90 degree lens to be on their side) to aftermarket super bright red leds which have a standard lens and are made to be viewed flat and you have mounted them incorrectly. (they are SMD and designed to be mounted flat. not bootleg on their side)

If you want to do an actual comparison, you need to use the same leds with one set flat and the other on their side.

In the center of the rol, there are standard smd leds. Which way are they mounted?....... Ah, that should shut you up....LOL

FACT: (back to the OP's question, 90 degree lens vs 130-160 degree lens)
You preference, or the way you do something does not change the way the manufacturer designed and intended the product to be used. If you want to mount them on their side, you should be using leds with a 90 degree lens, which are what Microsoft uses.  The light is supposed to be shining directly out of the xbox into the diffuser, THE stock leds have 90 degree lenses, so the stock leds are shining out of the xbox.   

See how crisp the player l-4 bars are in the stock leds that have a 90 degree angle and are shining straight out of the xbox?  see how washed out they are when standard leds are placed on their side. That is because the diffuser can actually do its job when the leds are shining directly into it. would you like me to post the link to the definition of a diffuser again?

You are wrong. will it work on its side? yes, is it the proper way it should be done? no. no matter how many installs you do, it will not change the fact that it is a misconception that the stock leds are pointing into the center of the rol, when infact they are mounted on thier side with a 90 degree lens meaning, they are actually pointing straight out of the xbox, and the closest way to replicate that is to mount 0603 smd leds flat on their backs as designed and engineered, not how some mod shop bootlegged a tutorial and everyone followed suit.
