What's the best cutting tool to use for plastic?
« on: February 12, 2014, 04:17:33 PM »
Hello, I don't really know where to post this so I guess I'll do it here >.>

Anyways, I'm wondering what are the best tools to use to cut various plastic on consoles or anything else really. The first thing that I am going to cut into is the PSP housing, to cut out a hole for an internal camera on the back, a second analog nub, and also to cut out the ring of the UMD drive:

The hole that I'll cut for the 2nd analog nub:

I was thinking for the internal camera maybe use a drill, but for the rest I am not too sure.

As for stuff that isn't the PSP, I plan to cut out a window and maybe a design on the other side of my Xbox 360, and my PS2 as well.

Example of a window:

This is a jig saw:  http://www.harborfreight.com/orbital-jigsaw-with-dust-blower-and-laser-cutting-guide-69077.html

not good... use a scroll saw as shown above, or use a dremmel like I do. but I use the cone attachment to help control my cuts. http://www.dremel.com/en-us/Attachments/Pages/ProductDetail.aspx?pid=565

Jig would probably work awesome for the consoles as you have more space to work with and its pretty flat for the most part, but for your psp. I'd go with a dremel. You can get one from walmart for like $18.

Mostly use mine for drilling through glass

that is what they USE to call them in older days till they came out with a hand held like you show here... you forget that in 10 years difference things changed!

Alright awesome thanks for all the input, I'm definitely going to be getting a dremel. I found one on ebay and am wondering if this one would be good, or do I need to find something better and maybe get more attachments? I use a chicago dremel tool with a grinding wheel or a diamond crest cut wheel from harbor freights. I like the 565 multipurpose cut kit Modder matt posted I might get that myself for my latest PC/MAC project for a friend.

it helps alot. set the depth then you can use it more like a router. you dont have to support the tool with your wrist. which from experience, when your wrist gets tired, it starts getting sloppy. with this kit you can just let go and it supports itself.

Just bought one last night for $20 at lowes. Took the threaded cover off my chicago dremel fits like a glove. Now I have to make a template so i can do my round cuts :) thanks modder matt great advice. Ill post picture of how it works once I start to work on my hackintosh mod.
