Tutorial-- PSP Phat Direct Contact Sound Reactive Triggers
« on: July 30, 2008, 05:48:28 PM »
PSP Phat Direct Contact Sound Reactive Triggers

Introduction
Ok so this is my first tut and I hope it helps everyone that
needs help doing sound reactive triggers the Direct Contact
(Or Noob) Way.
Enjoy!

Parts Needed
-- PSP
-- 2x 603 SMD Led
-- 30 Gauge Kynar Wire [Two Colors is Best]

Tools Needed
-- 15-30 watt Soldering Iron
-- Solder
-- Screwdriver
-- Flux
-- Electical Tape
-- Drill

Average Time To Complete- About 30-45 Minutes

Difficulty Rating-3/5

Step By Step Tutorial

Ok so use PSP Disassembly Tut by Kenshinffx which can be found
Here
Until you are at your mobo.

Ok so Now you need to unplug your speaker.

I use the right one more ofter but either one works. So now that
should look like this.

Ok so now heat up your iron get all you leds out. While waiting
for your iron to heat up you will need to get 4 pieces of wire.
Two will go to the Right Trigger and Two to the Left Trigger.
Like So.

Ok so after you wire your leds to the wire you have to wire it to
the back of the speaker. The black wire leads to ground or
negative and the gray leads to positive.
Like this-

So then when that's wired the back of your speaker should look

like this-

Now you drill the triggers. You should use a 1/16 or 1/8 bit. I
didn't have a drill near bye so I used a dremel but either are
fine. So you drill a hole in the middle of the trigger not to far
though just enough for a bit of hot glue and an led.

When done they should look like this-

Now just put a dab of hot glue on the led and stick into the hole-

Now just route your wires. It doesn't really matter but here is an example-

And I found it better if you put some tape over the wires to keep them in place.

Now We just need to put it back together :)
Put on your LCD Cage and screw it in. Now every time you put
something on after modding ALWAYS TEST IF THE PSP WORKS! It would
really suck if it all together and you notice it doesn't work
right?

Put In your LCD
No picture i am looking for one :P

Put on your home bar-

Put on your faceplate-
Now after your put in every screw test that the PSP turns on and
the leds too if they don't its a short.

Turn it over and screw in these screws-

This image is from Kenshinffx's Tut.

Now Turn On your PSP And enjoy your easy to do Sound Reactive Leds!

This is a Video on how the Look!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OOAq7xJ7BwA
And that is in the day time ill make one at nite asap :)

Um idk I Know this way if you put like 10 leds it doesnt look as good as like 2-4 leds on the speakers. The most i would do is probly 6. But it can probly handle even more

i have seen a psp running abot 25 leds with this..... its crashman's psp.... he sold it and i myself have done 8 leds :#1:........4 on each speaker.... there was no significant decrease in the battery life too. Its just better than lm386...... its cheaper, easier, and supports more leds than it.

thanks chase for this sig =)

Yea but what you didnt kno is that your speakers will dim and wont be as loud cuz most of the power that runs into the speaker is being taken by LEDs.

Im gonna ask one more time, Why do u want to use LM386? And why u would not?

Reasons to use lm386
- It makes the leds a bit brighter
- Doesn't drain battery faster
- People say its more reactive to sound
- you have so much money that it wont affect if you throw a bucket full of $$$$ out of the window....

Reasons not to
- its hard to use and its easier if you dont use it
- if you want a load of leds it may not be able to power all of them
- it is cheaper if you dont use it
- you wont have to solder the anything to the mobo if you dont use it... and also a less risk of frying the mobo.

thanks chase for this sig =)

well .. the "brighter" and "more reactive" is pretty much the matter we want.
but about the power issue .. let's say 4 LEDs that's the average of LEDs somebody would
want to mod, so 1 LM386 can't power 4 LEDs enough? if not what will be effected? LED brightness?

Very nice tut Jumbo! was wondering when someone would make this.

I've found with my slim that the batt is drained quicker than before. but it's a chip rather than a soundboard. not sure if that makes a difference but i prefer this method as there is less soldering. what i would like to know is if there is a way of wiring this type ofled mod to a wifi swich or hold so you can turn it on and off?

You can't wire this way to the hold or wifi switch. You have to get the + and - from the spekaers to have it sound reactive. I THINK that if you wired them in a series curcuit then added a dip switch in for the + wire is would work as an on off fpr the leds but i can be wrong.

What other way is there that you'd need to use a 10ohm resistor? (soldering to motherboard speaker points?)

10 ohm is just for the trigger mod, (when it stays on all the time) for blue leds

10 ohm is just for the trigger mod, (when it stays on all the time) for blue leds

Accually secret-

Blue leds dont need any resistance in a psp phat :)

Unless hooked up to the 5 volt then you do need some.

Chart of Voltage LED can take-

Color           Potential Difference (Vf)
Infrared    1.6 V
Red            1.8–2.1 V
Orange    2.2 V
Yellow    2.4 V
Green    2.6 V
Blue            3.0–3.5 V
White    3.0–3.5 V
Ultraviolet    3.5 V

Taken from-
https://www.acidmods.com/Wiki/tiki-index.php?page=LED%20(Light-emitting%20diode)

So UV, White and Blue don't need any resistance off of the powerboard, LM386 IC Sound Mod, Sound Mod PCB, Direct Contact Sound Mod.

Only time it does it off of the 5 volt sources :)

OMG I DOUBLE POSTED :(

I feel dumb now. I though i modified :faint:

The only problem i found with this method is using red leds. because they require less power than blue, green and UV for example, they blow out very easily. i had to use a sound board in the end to get them working and an extra two 10ohm resistors. apart from taht, evry other led seems to work fine.
