Hay guys i would like to share my latest project A PSP slim single connector external controller mod
the PSP side of the project is finished so enjoy

and

image quality sux sense i had to use my camcorder to take pix. I'm using 2 20 pin IC sockets for the connector only thing ive found that will fit in there anywho need to start on the ps3 controller i'm using so yeah...

2 20 pin IC sockets wouldtake up a lot more room than an ipod 30pin connector I have one I kinda wana do a controler mod on slim too.

Good job man! Keep up the good work and finish it!
If you want to you can order some ipod plugs off of sparkfun, they are cheap and are worth it for a project like this.

already have 2 sets of the same Ipod connector i tried using it but the pins in the female are 2 flimsy I only needed 20 pins to get all that i need working 30 was just to many. The IC sockets are used for bolth male and female so thats y i used 2 of them

got my controller today and finished the wiring also slapped a new coat of paint on the controller to match the psp all i have left to do is the end connector

Very nice mod!

Also, the female ipod sockets are terrible things to jumper with kynar wire, as they were designed to be surface mounted onto a pcb, so I cantell folklord has never tried to solder one - they are do able, but the wires tend to pull the pins out, or flex so much the pins snap off.

I really like your soldering to the zif connector, can you still lift up the ffc clip? Or did you solder it with the fpcs in? If you did, well done for not burning the contacts on the ffcs.

ffc clip fpcs ffcs what are these things i dont know.

i solderd the ribbons inside the connectors if that's what you're asking

ffc is th thing that holds the ribbon cable. The ffcs is the ribbon cable. they are just different names. AWESOME JOB btw! can we see some more pics of the Ic sockets on the psp?

I wasn't talking about the controller. I saw the pic. What I didn't see was the analog wired on the psp.

the analog is wired up on the bottom of the mobo so u cant see them bit yeah i did

a video would be awsome. Also, is the connector flimsy at al? it looks like it sticks out pretty far. but hey, this is an awsome piece of work.

little update I am scrapping my IC connector the connection fits 2 tight and i broke off 2 pins on the male connector removing it

Yes I have tried its not all that hard just depends how you go about it I did tit the same way I did with my LCD soldering I taped the wires flat on my desk and had them all pre stripped and then soldered to each pin. Then keeping all the wires bundled transplant the connector to its new home in your psp case then simply solder to all the mobo contacts cutting the wire acordingly. I have one soldered and glued to a phat case think I might rip it out and do it on my slim.

man ryan your choice of soldering points scares me dosent seem to stable and seems like it would just snap off and it makes less clearance between the connector and LCD but seems you got it working I had doubts but I give you props you got it done your kind of like me you make do with what you have lol.

lol they aint gonna snap off i wouldn't solder something if i new it was going to fail those points are fine to solder on

Where exactly did you solder the connection for the PSPs analogue?
That's the only thing holding me back. Especially as I can't see where the tracks run for 2 of the plates.
Or did you solder directly onto the contact plate?
I've already ruined one analogue nub, I had to buy a replacement.

Also for anyone else interested I'm using an old useless 32MB CF card for the plug/socket.
It has 50 pins and can easily be cut down.
I'm going to use the card part of the connector in the PSP and the pins from a stripped reader for the plug. Cut down to fit a small PS2 AV plug.
I should be able to fit the socket in the little recess next to the battery, above the power slider.

But I could do with pics of where to solder from the analogue nub.

If anyone can help, I'd be really appreciative.

Actually, no. I'm not attempting it. Not yet anyway.
Not until I know for certain where to connect to the analogue.
I fail to see the comedy in that. I'd rather be cautious, ask these questions and do a good job, instead of "messing" and possibly destroying my PSP.

Agreed with alien and don't continue this project if you can't solder to it, you're going to destroy the psp.
Just solder to the gold plates and continue if you want to be daring...
The other parts are going to be 50x harder for you to do.

It's nothing to do with difficulty. I'm no stranger to micro electronics.
My concern is the little rubber contact strip on the analogue device, this is my first encounter of it.
My concerns are the connections it makes. If I were to change the surface of the plates it uses, will I change it's resistance level. Since that's how it works that's why I'm hesitant.

All I wanted was some place to solder that doesn't directly effect the natural workings of the PSP, so I can retain original functionality.
If the ONLY place to connect to is the plates, then I'll have to use the plates. But if anyone knows of an alternative location then that is what I was asking.

That analog stick. This is the easiest part of the mod dude... look around, everyone's done it before.
