You need at least 5 volts. My experience shows that being way over that is sometimes benificial. I use 10 volt ones at the time I made the diagram. I've also used 16 volt and they also work fine. I'd suggest one of those.

atomic, basically, the voltage you dont have to worry about, you only need the voltage to be higher than what your working with (As the voltage is the highest voltage they can cope with) so If i was you, get 16v, they are by far the most common and cheapest (And smallest)

The capacitor blocks the foreward voltage to the speaker. This prevents you from getting distortion or annoying noises in the speaker.

Why not just use a diode?

Because a diode in one direction will block all voltage coming through. Therefore you get no sound. Put it the other way, and all power goes through. Thats what we are trying to stop in the first place. The capacitor just absorbs the extra electricity that would be making noises in the speaker.

I just ordered 10 100uf 10v capacitors from mouser to try this mod out. I already have a few LM386.
EDIT: These came today and they are no good for this mod.  It still sounds fuzzy and it sounds horrible. Wiring the speaker in parallel is much better... Wasted my money on something that won't work for this mod.  :faint:

Hmm i know its been a few weeks since this has had a post on but i got question what you want to add 3 more speakers does that mean you add a 100uf(16v) to each speaker.

Yeah add one to each speaker.

psp339: the caps work fine. I've used this method many times. You probably had them In backwards. Put the - side to the speaker.

hmm on the diagram doesnt say what volts is going to the leds im guess its 3.0 cuz its using the volts from the speaker.

that looks good. Just remember to put the - side of the cap to the speaker and the + to the source.

Also, where did you get the mesh material that is around the center speaker?

ok now does it matter with tip of the uf i use to connect to what. i still need to figure whats the positive and negative ends on these speakers cuz there not marked. i got my mesh from a old portable cd player it was no good and that so i used parts from it even the uf i got from it as well.

well for the speakers it shouldn't matter which side you use as the + or - . Also the cap has the - side marked with a white stripe and a - sign.

You want to put the cap on the + side of the speaker. Attach the - side to the speaker and the + side to the + leading to the speaker.

you lost me me on the second part so i thought its like the pic you connect one uf to each + of the speaker and then connect all the - ends of the uf together

Not exactly. Just do it like the picture is. The capacitor will only work correctly one way. The - side needs to go away from the speaker.

Well I've built my own speakers for my iPod before. I used the method above and it works very well for me. Even the speakers I bought use the same thing. A 100uf cap after the amps.
