RRoD 360
« on: October 26, 2009, 08:02:57 PM »
Someone's selling one to me for $50-55 with the cables and a controller.  He said he purchased it in December of 2007 and that he's done the "towel" fix on it 10-15 times at least until he decided to use the penny method he found on youtube.  He hasn't used washers to fix it or x-clamps.  What I want to know is if the towel fix has done too much damage that would keep it from running.  He said with the penny fix, it worked for about a month before it got the RRoD again, so I would assume that the internal chips are fine, but let me know if it can be fixed after all that.

Thanks guys

well, when dealing in used 360's I dont buy them after they have been opened for anymore than $10 there is no telling what they have actually done. however most of the ones you see on ebay are just the console. no cables, no controller.

as far as how much damage has he done, i would say probably alot. towel trick 10-15 times makes me cringe just at the thought of it. and the penny trick is crap. It is posible that a proper xclamp fix could bring it back to like but its not likely it will last long, the board is probably badly warped by now.

as for the price though, when I buy them on ebay, like I said unopened, no error, just rrod if it has E74 PASS..I get them for like $15 and it cost about $15 in parts for the xclamp. then if you fix you need cables and a controller..

cables=$15-20 dollars
controller=$25-50 dollars (used/new)

it is was me, I would go ahaid and get it for the cables, controller, disk drive etc..and look for an unopened RROD like I said above for like $15..

I did the towel trick to mine at least like, 20 times before I fixed it properly. I did the X-Clamp in August and it has been working fine ever since :tup:

I might have just got lucky though.

I got one from my friend for $40 bucks with only the cables. $50 bucks for the controller, cables, and the internals is a great deal.

Just buy it...For the price and what it comes with it's worth a shot. I hate when people try the towel trick..That is so stupid...People just don't understand there are a lot of components inside the 360 that aren't suppose to heat up period.  Just look at the mobo once you get it to check if anything is busted from the heat.(caps/tras) If anything exploded you will def. be able to tell on the mobo haha

I doubt that anything is really wrong tho. Just do the x clamp mod and it should go for you.

I still don't get why people are being so stupid/cheap to not spend the money on a proper kit to properly repair the unit. Most are kids who are idiots coming up with these stupid "fixes"...penny,towel,eraser,credit card on top of the chips,thermal on chips,etc... To me if I was going to spend all that time doing that crazy BS, why not just buy a repair kit and do the x clamp mod? haha

Stupidity amuses me. But yeah buy it up and give it a shot..If fails, sell the console only as-is and keep the other accessories you got and look for one like matt said...Un opened/good seal. cromwell dog is a good supplier on those on ebay..He works out great deals on bulk units   :hifive:

a x-clamp is.....

the badly designed system for holding the heat sinks on your xbox down to the mother board/GPU/CPU

there a bit flimsy and dont do a good job hence why we replace them with big fat bolts through the main cage of the box.

this the underside of the motherboard showing the x-clamps...
(i ddint take this photo, we can thank google images for it....

Ok, my last question: Is the X-Clamp fix recommended for a system that never had the rrod? Or should I not bother with it for now?

If you've got a newer console, you don't need it.  If it's from 07 prior, highly recommended in my opinion.
