PS36D, Left Stick and D-pad Swapped on PS3 Controller
« on: January 12, 2010, 08:49:15 AM »
Nasty quality video of testing the Left Stick..

http://s50.photobucket.com/albums/f320/RDC...nt=PS36D007.flv

D-pad insides installed and wired up. Still have to do something about the stick opening, but as far as function goes, there she is..

http://s50.photobucket.com/albums/f320/RDC...nt=PS36D008.flv

I don't care much for messing with bondo/paint, so I went with transplanting the stick opening from another controller over the original D-pad opening.

Not many, when I get to working on something new the last thing I feel like doing is stopping to take 10 pics of it until I get one good pic of it that I like. ;)

There was a good deal of altering the shell internally as well as the brace that holds the Daughter board that I don't have a single pic of, but these pretty much cover what was done with the board.

As far as the D-pad went, it's really the same deal as how I make the 36D controller up, just a little more precise since it's fit into a smaller area.

http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic=655017

I'd also like to mention that nothing was sacrificed function wise to make this swap, the D-pad is still Analog, no Tact switches were used, Rumble is still in place, it just has the Stick and D-pad swapped is all.

Thanks guys.

I post mainly over at XS, and as far as a controller mod off goes it's really not my thing. I prefer to take what someone says can't be done, would like to see done or just whatever strikes my fancy at the time and then see if I can figure it out, there's just more reward in that for me, plus I've already worked on the The CGnome Project, so there's really not a whole lot more to do with a (360) controller after that, until we get around to working on Mark II of it that is. ;)

Thanks again all.

This is really just something I tossed together in a few days after a user at XS sent me a pic someone had done in Photoshop or something a good while back of one of the Satin (Silver) PS2 controllers done up like that for a PS3 controller redesign contest or some thing..

http://www.joystiq.com/2006/01/25/joystiq-readers-redesign-the-ps3-controller/

..so I figured I'd see if I could make fake into fact, and there it is. ;)

The PS3 controllers are a right PITA to do some things with, Sony's design is just jacked up and makes for doing something simple like swapping X and D-pad Down a right chore. This really wasn't too difficult at all by comparison to some of the controllers I've done up, but it was still interesting to see finished up.

Again, Thanks all, much appreciated.

I've been here awhile though, just don't post as much here as I do on XS is all. ;) Hope the 360 is still kicking.

Great job very neat work! does it feel better to play games? used to own xbox 360 and when swapped to ps3 thought the controller was better with the size and weight difference but the sticks are level and am not sure which is better.

Thanks guys.

As far as how it feels goes, you'll have to ask the guy that bought it, but the little I used it the thing was alright. The PS3 controller layout has it's + and -, so does any controller, but that's the person's problem, not the controller itself. If I don't like something I change it, plain and simple, and going by all of the different controller setups I've done over the years now you really wouldn't want to go by my opinion at all anyway. ;)

This one is already gone, so the more accurate question is would I make another one up. ;) If you're interested in having one made you can PM me about it.
