xbox 360 HDD light
« on: November 17, 2010, 03:20:22 PM »
alright so recently i saw on youtube a kid with a window in his hdd and i told myself i could do that so now im getting to it. i know how to make the dremel cuts and everything i was wondering if anyone had a simple 555 timer led flasher tutorial.

update
i know the power and ground of the hdd i just want to use the chip to make it flash-E

What kind of flash effect are you looking for?

Strobe?
Fade?
Flicker?

A rather quickly done schematic for a 555, these LEDs will only flash on and off, they won't fade in/out with that circuit.

The components to change for the time you want are R1, R2 and C1, there is a calculator for this here.

R3 and R4 are to protect the LEDs, and I'm kinda lazy to work out values (And I don't know what LEDs or voltage you are using)

Voltage/Current = Resistance
Voltage in Volts, Current in Amps and Resistance in Ohms. Most LEDs have a forward current of about 20mA, which is 0.02 Amps.

Just a note: Those LEDs flash in alternation, not at the same time, if you want them to flash at the same time, put them on the same side (If that makes sense).

If that's not what you wanted, then meh. :P

thanks i decided i might just put something like this on the faceplate because from what you told me it will create a strobe affect thanks again

Ask FOOKz if you want it to fade. XD I never done a fading circuit (Well I did, but it was before I knew what a resistor was... And yeah. XD)

its good for fading maybe i dont know lol but i plan to put two leds on the two longest sides so they alternate blinking

i need a little clarification
1) what pin does the positive side of c1 connect to
2) does R3 connect to 4 or 8
3) does R1 connect to 4 or 8
4) does R2 connect to 6 or 2
5) and does the box that connect 6, 2 and 4,8 mean to link it with a wire

double edit lol

does this look right for the led to switch blinking every .5 seconds

whoa whoa whoa . . .

0.1 Farads? what the F--- that is a huge capacitor.............

your resistor values are too low and your capacitor value is too high.

C1 should be 22 Micro Farad (0.000022 Farad) or [22uF]

R1 can be 22K ohms (22,000 ohms)

R2 is approximately the same as R1 (22K ohms)

plug these values in the calculator you will get almost the same effect.

Increase the resistance to slow the LED's speed down
Decrease the resistance to speed it up...

Increase the capacitance to slow it down.
Decrease the capacitance to speed it up.

Yeah, I shoulda mentioned about the capacitor value. XD

As for that 'box', that is a 555 IC. The numbers are its pins (But not in RL).

In operation, Pin 3, the output pin bounces between high and low, when it's high, it's giving LED2 the power it needs to light (This is called sourcing). When it's low LED1 lights because its source of power is your battery or whatever your power supply is. When this is happening, Pin 3 is acting as the sink.

R1, pin 4 & 8, and R3 are all connected to your supply.

R2/C1 connects to both pin 2 and 6.

(A big dot is a wire connection)

S :censored: T happens dude. Your glad you don't work for a radio broadcasting company (like my friend) where they had been fined by the FCC because of bad math. Glad you understand :D
