PS3 DVD DRIVE LOGIC BOARD question
« on: March 27, 2011, 08:13:51 PM »
I have been looking around and cant find the answer, I have a PS3, that i changed the Logic board on and everything works  yet will not read the disk, and I know why because the board is differnet then the one that belongs to it, its off a 20 gb PS3 and not a 40gb... yet I found out that the board is no good. TESTED thats all.

I have been reading and looking. My question ,IS the logic board keyed like a 360 to match the motherboard or can I just replace the board and it will work?

The logic board is "married" (tech term) to your PS3s mainboard.

There's a way to remarry a logic board to your mainboard - I haven't done it, but there's plenty of people who have. I can try and do some Google-fu and find something, but your best bet is to either find a tut or find someone who's done it who will make a tut for you.

I have found some info on it, and just not sure, if you just need the same firmware board, I tried another board, from a 20 gb ps3 which mine is a 40 gb drive, and everything worked, except it wouldnt read the cd or game, it would auto feed in and spin up the laser worked and just wouldnt read and had no errors. I did see that you need to replace 2 chips from yours to another , yet no tut showing how to do it

thanks I will keep looking if you fine something let me know

Ebay has a replacement board, that you can buy that is replaceable as long as firmware matches, the board numbers BMD-001 A1, A2,A3,A4

Like I said I have tried another board everything worked , except reading the disk, so that tells me that it can be changed if you buy the right board with out having to change the chip or key. Sony says that it can just be put in and replaced , whether that is true , I will have to find out other then that you have a Epromm chip and a bmg chip that has to go on the board doesnt look that hard . just time and patients

make sence>?

Best answer I have found :As long as the console is in the same family ie. CECH-xxxxA or something like that It should plug and play.

[Console Serial Number] + [Main circuit board ID] + [BD Drive] + [WLAN board (MAC address)] are bound together (HW-ID) in SCEI Server
PS3 service mode Jig set-up manual.pdf (page 22)

In a random comment on the interwebs.
This is what I'm going to begin looking into when I get back in 30 mins.

thanks , will find out if it works soon, either going to change the chips out to the board I have on the 20gb ps3 i had or wait to get this board from this guy and see if i can just pop it in and plug and play. has same numbers on board BMD-001 A3

Also what I read is that It can not be changed with service mode jig if it is past the firmware 3.55 and mine is 3.60.

Thanks for helping maybe together we can help others with the same problems.

Ok, So I bought a new controller /logic board for my ps3 blu-ray drive. numbers matching and plug it in and everything works now except reads the disk, accepts the disk loads up and then no sign of  game play on the dashboard. so I have been searching all over the internet there is a way to flash the firmware as long as its below 3.56 on the ps3. There for I am on to the next step replacing the nano chip or BGA chip as  I found a video on you tube. thanks for all your help and hope this helps others and thanks to the guy in the video for showing us an easy way to change the chip.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Zh46cR6k3s

Hope this helps anyone with this problem. when I get  the right paste here I will be attemping this myself and will let you know if I suceeded or failed wish me luck!

Things needed to do this below!
1. Heat Gun
2. Soldering Iron
3. Solder Paste (Sn 63/Pb 37)
4. Flux
5. Isopropyly Alcohol
6. Desoldering Braid

I also been told to dab the braid not roll it around like in  the video . just a note!

Nice - so just pull that chip off your old board and drop it into the new logic board? Helluva lot faster than waiting for a 3.56 or god forbid, 3.60 downgraders.

its not as easy as it looks it took time trying to get the chip to solder up, took me a few tries to get it to solder up to  the board. everthing else was easy getting the chip off both boards and reballing it like the video showed, and just trying to get it to solder up to the  board was the  hardest part

I'm glad we could help, sometimes the chip can't handle high heat. Temperature is critical~remember that.

Thats true, I guess I should of mentioned that, becuase in the video on  you tube someone asked  what temperature did they set the heat gun at , He mentioned 300 degrees C which is  around 570 Degrees F. I did it around 500 and I think thats what could of been the problem of getting it to solder to  the board or type of  solder I was using.

Thanks again everyone!

Yes this will work , the bga chip is matched to the motherboard , I had to use a different board other then the one i bought. due to i made a few mistakes due to it was my first time doing it.

Best suggestion I got , take your time be patient that is the best advice i can give good luck let me know how it turns out.

origionally the normal drive stopped reading disks. would eject and take in games but nothing happend.not even a spin. so i plugged a new drive in and again it ejected and took the discs and i could here it trying to spin up but obviously wouldnt read the disk.
i have managed to remove the origional chip and place it on the new logic board but i litertally get nothing. wont even take the disk.
i took my time and lined it up. you think its due to the chip not being seated properly? how may attempts did it take you?

It took me 3 tries to get it seated properly , i had the same issues that your having tried and tried it and finally got it working, make sure that the chip is in the right location meaning that it goes on the same way it came off and put a little pressure down on the chip while heating it up will help with seating the chip to make a better connections light pressure and heat at same time you dont want it to move around due to it will bridged together , you will get it just be patient

They have to be the same series. IE single laser or dual. dual laser control boards need both chips.
bmd-002 is for launch 20/60gb machines.
Sorry I missed this guys.

I know that when i did this I had bought the same board and messed the Traces up trying to do it on the replacement board after i messed the traces up and I already spent $40 dollars on the board I couldnt afford another board at the time. I had a logic board that was out of a 20gb PS3 boards looked nothing alike, I swapped the BGA and took my 3rd and final try and when I pluged the different logic board from the 20 gb in with the BGA from the 40 gb drive two different consoles , two different logic boards and got the BGA re attached it worked fine would play blu-ray movies , played black ops the game and played regular cd's and music cds .. this has been proven. not just by me but buy a few others that i have seen since i done this... maybe just luck . maybe its true what 1TONpete says also I havent done enough of them myself to prove it works 100% I just know that what i did worked and sold the PS3 10 minutes later for a good amout of money working.

Maybe it is I who stands corrected.  :dntknw:
You have more experience w bga swaps than me. But I still think my point is valid. I dont think you can swap from dual to single or maybe the other way around. The boards can be different just saying , I think they have to be either dual or single.
Either way the bmd-001 and the 002 are swapable so it should be working.
