Alright, I'm stumped. Can someone help me out?
« on: February 10, 2012, 09:03:16 AM »
I was working on my 360, and it decided to fall off of a ~1.5' tall box while it was open (DVD drive/fan in, and in the metal cage).

It turns on, fans work, DVD drive works, no RRoD, no broken or missing components on the board.
I get no video or audio.

Any ideas?

Try cleaning the thermal paste off putting new Artic Silver 5 paste, bend the X- clamps so they will hold tighter against the CPU and the GPU. Then start it up after you put it all back together. if that don't work.. then unplug the fan till it over heats, then turn it off plug the fan back in and turn it on should work...

If this continues then you need to reflow the GPU .   Then issue will be fixed !

that would be my last step rodent. the box was working before? check the av plug, or try hdmi first. if you have a composite av cable check to make sure the switch is not in between its steeings

If that was the issue matt he should still have sound. either way even if the switch wasn't switched the right way.

I look at a reflow as a last resort to anything. Just not sure how a fall can cause solder cracks.

Thats why i said  try and change the paste, its not so much the solder cracked could be the thermal paste is causeing and issue, using the wrong thermal paste can cause issues with the xbox , short between the componets on the board. I have seen alot of stupid stuff happen. and If it has been sitting or dropped, shock from the fall or dried out thermal paste and cause it to over heat instantly and not show no errors. I have seen this before, and is odd .

I always inspect the xbox before doing any reflow also ( always My last Resort ) but usually needs it.

oh believe that it can ive encountered every disaster known to man when dealing with x box's i would scan the board first near the av port etc maybe the av port got damaged due to the fall

Cold solder joins/bad solder joints break very easily. If you go and solder 2 pieces of wire together the wrong way (putting solder on the iron and then smearing it on the two wires) if you try to pull them apart, it breaks very easily because it is brittle. When you solder it the right way, you can pull all you want and they will not separate, but the wires insulation may come off lol.

When it fell, the DVD drive fell out of the case but that's it. It was still in, and screwed into, the metal chassis. The ports should be fine. Doesn't work with HDMI, Composite, or Component.

It's a MW2 360 (Falcon, I believe). I know the GPU is probably the cause, but I don't see how this could even be happening. It should at least output sound, and it there was a problem then I'd be getting a red ring.

It wont red ring, and I don't know why it does that , but usually when it starts to do this it the GPU and that is what needs to be done like i explained in the first reply...

let me know what happens when you do that. if it contuniues you need to reflow the gpu...

Well I don't have any spare thermal paste here at college so it's going to have to wait. I'd really prefer not to reflow the board but if I have to, I guess I will.

Replaced the RoL board. I'm actually getting RRoD, error 0021. Reflowed a few times and got nowhere. Reflowed a few more times, now I'm getting 0020. Reflowed a few more times and still no change. Xclamped it, and STILL no change.

I'm convinced this thing is dead. All because of a little fall...god damnit.

did you try reflowing the south bridge?  Also I like arctic cooling MX-4 over AS5 it keeps temps lower and no curing time, of course you could go all out and get some past with diamond dust in it.

No way lol

Of course I did. It's not a matter of overheating; this is all because I dropped it.

Anyway,I just took the GPU/SB off and I'm going to reball them. If that doesn't work, I'll reball the RAM/(H)ANA chips and maybe the CPU. God damnit this is annoying.

Reballing should fix the issue, also check for blown capacitors now that you have reflowed it a few times could of damaged one... not saying you did but always double check them

I checked. I need to shift a capacitor and resistor back into place, but besides that I got everything off clean. I'm reballing the 2 RAM chips that are closer to the front of the 360 as well. The HANA and other 2 RAM chips look perfect. This better work, my new Resident Evil game just got here haha
