Xbox 360 Controller redesign commission
« on: October 15, 2012, 12:25:25 PM »
I've been hired to make a mini xbox 360 controller with the right analog stick even with the left stick, and the abxy buttons underneath the right stick for a handicapped gamer.

This is the controller I'm using. http://www.amazon.com/Xbox-360-Mini-Pro-Controller-Wired/dp/B005761CFO/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1349020333&sr=8-3&keywords=small+xbox+360+controller

Update: I cut the right analog stick and the abxy buttons out. I fiberglassed the hole from the analog stick. I filled the fiberglass with jb-weld and I sanded it down. I need to build it up a little more, so I put on some more just now and I'll sand that down when it is dry tomorrow.

Next I need to desolder the analog stick and rewire it and then I can put the analog stick hole in the case.

Lookin good, interesting controller choice, but it'll look like a whole new controller once it's done and painted.

I finished one of these controllers a few days ago, all the positioning and soldering was pretty simple.  Have you done one of these before?  My only tips are to pick responsive, comfortable buttons, position them sorta close and comfortably, and make sure the right analog stick is as flat and centered as possible (I shaved a tiny bit off the inside of the controller's analog housing to give it perfect freedom)

Yes I have done this before.

Here is one that I started for a customer but it was dropped so it is not complete

I just relocated the analog stick and it is working fine. Oh, and I didnt pick the controller out.

you should have used the button cutout in the place of the right stick..... https://www.dropbox.com/s/zdmouh8kaisjsnf/IMG_3306.JPG

I had to repaint this, but take a look

That is the obvious place to put it but the buyer insisted on having me put it underneath the new location of the right analog stick.

ah, something like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/yfuzgkio74334z5/DSCF2287.JPG

not my best work, but the customer was happy. The problem with placing the buttons below the stick is that the Mobo is flat and the shell curves around closer to it as you move down on the controller.  You will be much better off usign aftermarket buttons... let me know what button you find that will fit.

I see what you mean. If I have complication with that (witch I probably will), then I can trim those tall buttons down a bit probably. I'm using a wired controller so the circuit board is pretty simple so I might be able to just cut the circuit board where the buttons are going. There is only a transistor and a few caps where i would cut. It would be easy to trace back those compenents and re wire them if needed. It looks like those components are for the right rumble (which is not going to be present) so I may not even need those at all.

I got the analog stick hole in the case. The sticks are pretty even.

The case is ready for some green paint!

My theory was right. I cut the bottom corner of an extra controller i had and without any rewiring, the controller works. The components I cut off were just for the right rumble.

I had trouble with the height of the butons and even though I cut part of the controller motherboard off, it didnt fully resolve the issue but it helped though. So now, I cut half the height of the buttons and I dont have any issues now.

I cut the buttons pcb from the donor xbox controller I had and wired it up. There is only 1mm between the button pcb and the controller motherboard so it was a close one for sure!

I epoxied in the buttons pcb and assembled the controller after it dried. It's finished! I'm really proud at how this controller came together. You cant even notice I moved the buttons! This controller is flawless.
