2915 Work Log - PSP Dash mod
« on: January 17, 2013, 10:21:18 AM »
I will be uploading my photos tonight (and will just edit this post)

I will be doing a PSP 1000 mod with a bunch of the normal led's and what not so nothing to special except i will be atempting to wire them to the UMD motor to make them spin =)

The big part of this mod will be building a vacume forming table so i can make a custom Dash mount for by car as i have long since removed my deck and would like to make my PSP my deck.

Stay tuned for photos

What? How in the heck are you planning to do that?

Sounds AWESOME if you could pull it off but i'm not sure how it could work.. Number one the motor only spins when a umd is inserted, and when you insert one wouldn't it cover up the leds? Number two wouldn't the wires get all twisted up and what not since they're moving? idk. just saying my thoughts out loud lol

Both kool ideas Bonz.
First my thoughts on the spinning action, if you want to re-use your umd drive motor, you could eliminate the whole drive circuit and just drive it off a voltage and a switch. Maybe wifi etc.
Also they make a generator/light combo attachment for dremils. something like tha could be adapted to work. You might run into trouble with the spining and trying to run wires or contacts to your leds.

Your deck idea is cool. I started out doing one for my Vita and ended up putting in an android 7" tab. My dash was previously modded to accept a 7" lcd. I just removed the lcd in the dash and made a dock for it. Not sure if I still got build pics from it but , I could show what the end result came out like.
My final choice of the tablet was better given the larger screen.

thank you guys.

your both very correct i will be disabling the way the umd drive works and will likely wire up the umd motor to a roller switch (like an old volume nob on a gameboy) so i can adjust the speed.  as for how to run the led's think of that old electric race track you had when you were a kid, or even a train set.  same idea for powering the leds.  hopefully the power needed is so low it won't generate sparks but who knows!

pics should be up in an hour or so

Just an idea but , do you know how a points system works in older cars?
You could have the spinning action light up leds as it hits contacts for them like a points distributor. Giving a flashing rotating pattern.

wow that would look really cool... but i'm kinda thinking of finding a tiny arduino type chip and making this a POV. but we will see how that works =)

so I've hit a road block and i was coping someone could help...

the motor for the umd (and laser control) are A/C powered (3 pins) so i won't be able to power them direct.  does anyone know where i could rob A/C power from in the psp... Or even better know of a piece of homebrew that will activate the drive motor?

my last ditch would be to grab a very tiny inverter to do the job but I'd rather not have to go that route

any help would be great

Sounds like a tough one. Maybe make the psp spin it naturally while trying to read a scratched UMD Disc (extracted from case) mounted to the motor, then mount the LEDs to the top of the disc? If you did that, you could also scratch through the mirror coating in certain places to make a small laser show whenever its trying to read (personally I would electrocute it for the desired effect lol).

not a bad idea but the psp shuts down the drive after about 30 sec of not being able to read the disk.  makes me wish that i could program, I'd just write something to activate the drive!

i may just find a tiny motor to replace it with.
