Elite controller 1698 Board short to ground
« on: January 03, 2021, 12:40:45 PM »
Hey guys i have a elite controller  with small holes. I wanted to replace the right  joystick due to stick drift. I  removed old one plugged new one in and it was perfect so I went ahead and soldered it in and after that  it showed that it?s pushed forward. I?ve removed it and there is some damage to the holes and   now on the middle pin of the potentiometer it shows short to ground.  Controller turns on but I hear weird noises coming from the board

Any ideas ?
Update

J2/J6 Connector Pinout
Pin 4 is short to ground

If J2/J6p4 is shorted to ground then the controller isn't turning on, because that is the 3.3v rail.

Separate the boards and check the Resistance again to see which one has the issue.

The continuity setting on a meter is not the correct way to check for a short. Those things can beep even if there is hundreds of ohms of Resistance, and that's not a short.

If you suspect C23 then just remove it, it will work fine with it missing. D25 could also be causing an issue on the RSY line. Post a pic of the area there, could be some solder splash on there causing it.

I went and removed c23 and wasn?t it. So I removed D25 as well and that solved the problem. I got connector. I installed new joystick and it wast at 0.03 on Both sides.  After solder it started acting up and it?s changing on its own.

Bad connection ??

The short trace between D25 and C23 looks like it could be broken, can't really tell from that pic.

I re soldered everything and it seems like it?s working fine now. But I can?t manage to calibrate it less then 0.04 is that in the limits ??

I think the kit I got was a knock off or something. How I do know witch one is good quality and witch are poor quality knock off ?

Lots of things could cause a short on the 3.3v rail. Find out which board has the issue first. The top board can be plugged in via USB cable and the 3.3v checked. If you know the top board to be good, then inject 3.3v into the bottom board and see what gets hot first.

It turns on but doesn?t get detected.  C23 gets really hot. When 2 board are connected it shows short but when separate not so I?m assuming it?s the other board.  Unfortunately I don?t have a way to inject power to it  is there any other way I can check ?

Remove the Capacitor and see if it powers up then.
