Xbox elite series 2 controller right stick bad repair
« on: October 21, 2021, 01:28:27 AM »
Hello.

During the repair of the Elite series 2 controller, a strange error occurred to me. I wanted to replace the stick on the right, but after I soldered the new stick this was what the diagnostics showed:

And the PCB looks like this:

What did I do wrong during the repair? I hope you can help.

You'll need to rebuild the circuit but its not a difficult one. Just look for the diagram for your controller, its under Xbox one controllers/rapid fire.
What you did wrong is clearly you used too much heat and too much time for the solder points. Microsoft uses a very hard tin which needs a lot more heat than regular soldering tin, next time add a little of your own tin, then try to mix it with the point of the soldering iron.  Crank the heat up a lot and don't use like more than 2 seconds for each pad.

When you have removed the piece you can then turn down the heat just enough for your solder to melt so it will be easier on the pads.
Another thing that works well with Elite controllers is destroying the damaged stick so you can remove pin by pin and not worrying about removing the solder with a suction tool.

No pads are ripped off the bottom in that pic there.

Most likely you've torn some of the thru hole plantings out and lost the ground connections to the POTs, since those connections are all done on an internal layer on that board version.

Try this on the right stick there and see how it acts after installing those 2 jumper wires.

Screwing up is one of the best learning tools, so long as the only thing you're not learning is how to screw up.

Hot Air is the key to ripped pad enlightenment!

Need a pic of the other side of the board to know the full issue.
