Title: L0rdNiC0s tutorial for the Sound Reactive LED Mod for the Slim
Post by: l0rdnic0 on October 27, 2007, 10:45:50 AM
Well all here it is, I hope you like it. I used other peoples tutorials and I gave credit, however if the names I used are wrong please let me know and I’ll fix it.   :#1:

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2FTopWinCE-1.png&hash=e920e30bbed44106738c6e4e6a2a7da80746566a)
L0rdNiC0s Sound Reactive LED Mod for the Slim

I would like to point out two things. First Both AcidMods and the author of this document will not and can not be held responsible for any negative results that you may have by performing the actions listed here. In essence Do This At Your Own Risk. Also since you need to open up the slim, you can say goodbye to your warranty!

READ THE FULL DOCUMENT BEFORE YOU START!

What you should do before you start! Copy an MP3 file to the MUSIC folder on your Memory Stick. This will help you test before you have to put your PSP together.

Let’s start by building the sound chip.
Note: Make sure that you use flux and Tin (on/for) all of your wires and connections.

Using Jrf's tutorial (https://www.acidmods.com/Wiki/tiki-index.php?page=PSP%20Sound%20Mod) build the Sound Mod. You will need to complete ONLY the following steps before we can install.
a.   Cut the legs off the Amp as shown on Jrf’s instructions.
b.   Connect the resistors and Wire that will be run to the speakers
c.   Connect a wire to the 5Volt + Pin
d.   Connect a wire to the Ground –  Pin
e.   Connect a wire to the LED Anode + Pin.
f.   Cut the non used legs off of the LM386
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2Fchip-1.png&hash=a4eb834d1bfc9d91e693b1c2f8b470546e8be413) (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/l0rdnic0/chip-1.png) This is what mine looks like. Take note on how I mounted the resistors, I did it this way cause my resistors are on the big side and I wanted this to fit under the heat shield.

Now that you have that stuff built, let’s take the PSP apart. Refer to T3KN1K4L’s PSP Slim & Lite Disassembly Tutorial (https://www.acidmods.com/Wiki/tiki-index.php?page=PSP%20Slim%20%26%20LIte%20Disassembly).
NOTE: you will not be using all the steps in that document. Stop before removing the Mother Board and return to this document (see WiFi Switch).

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2Fsticker-1.png&hash=25020fe46de7f19aac7b34e164494f8f0a7035f4) (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/l0rdnic0/sticker-1.png) In the first step you will need to remove the security sticker. I have had much success with removing this sticker without disturbing the security measures (VOID). Take care when removing it, if you peel it to fast or the wrong angle you will separate the martial. If you do it right you can store the sticker (sticky side up) somewhere safe, incase you blow something up….   ;-)

WiFi Switch.
Once you have removed all the cables and the screws that hold the Mother Board in place you’re ready to take it out.

MAKE sure you lift from the lower left! Once you can pop up the MB (Mother Board) lift it and pull down as the USB port needs to come out from under the plastic at the top. Also note there is a heat shield under the MB, it’s good to study how this was placed so you can put it back together later (sorry forgot to take this picture).

After you have fully extracted the MB flip it over and arrange it so that the USB port is facing away from you and the Memory Stick slot is on the right hand side.

Now you want to focus above the MS (Memory Stick) where you will see the WiFi switch.

The WiFi switch has three leads. I will list them from Left to Right.

Anode +, Cathode -- and Dead

When the switch is on the WiFi mode the Circuit is complete, but when you turn it off the Ground and the Dead pin are connected!! So let’s make it so we can use the switch to Enable/Disable our mod and still use the WiFi

To do this lets grab some Kynar wire and connect the Anode and Cathode pins. It’s best to use flux and tin on both the piece of wire as well as the legs of the switch. This will help you solder the wire nice and clean.

Note: To make this easier I bent a piece of wire into a U shape and bent the ends to away from the center of the U like the Greek Omega Symbol . Since there is not a lot of room in here I was able to hold the wire with clamps and still solder it clean.

Next let’s take another piece of Kynar wire and solder it to the Dead pin (this will serve as our Ground point for the LED’s and the Sound Mod). I recommend using a little more wire then needed to make sure you have enough.

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2FSwitch1-1.png&hash=99df8a932e6a9e17c4d126254f88047a7aa9b437) (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/l0rdnic0/Switch1-1.png) When you’re done it should look like this.

Installing the Sound Mod.

Now take your Amp (Sound Mod) and wire up the Anode + lead.
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2FLocation1-1.png&hash=245a4cee09119ff5fb95bf823ae59cd051231900) (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/l0rdnic0/Location1-1.png) To do this place tape around your Amp and ensure that there is no exposed joints or other metal and place it on the top of the MS cage like so.

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2FPower-1-1.png&hash=42f0799907d6df65d496ef54fae7d8fb71e9eb4e) (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/l0rdnic0/Power-1-1.png) Wrap your 5V Wire around the bottom center of the MS where it has a notch as shown here and solder it to the top of the left most resistor.

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2Finput-1-1.png&hash=17634c195fce074e839a9435b185f52252575785) (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/l0rdnic0/input-1-1.png)  Now take the two wires that come off the resistors of your Amp and bring them to the top of the MB.  They will be soldered to the contact points of the speaker. Remember that the 191Kohm is positive (that’s the bottom contact point – my Blue wire).  Leave some extra cable here and make sure the wires are run something like mine. If they’re not run this way they will interfere with the directional pad and speaker (your case will not close right).

Building the LED’s.

At this point you will be preparing the LED Shoulder Mod. Please Refer to Chaos’ PSP Trigger Mod  (https://www.acidmods.com/Wiki/tiki-index.php?page=PSP%20Trigger%20Mod) for details.
Note: Remember that Chaos’ Tutorial was developed for the Fat PSP. I just used it as a point of reference and the actual trigger drilling process.

To wire the LED’s I found it easiest to do it this way, you may have a different way but that’s taster choice.

1.   Take two pieces of DIFFERENT color Kynar wire and cut at an equal length. Like 8” to 10” inches.
2.   (https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2Fwire-1.png&hash=c3d99f65893581791ba8b7d1d1c0c96b11e5312f) (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/l0rdnic0/wire-1.png)  Put them together and place them in the drill (where the bit goes).  Hold the other end of the wires while powering the drill (slowly). This will spin the wires together and add more stability (it also looks cleaner). If you don’t have different color wire, skip this step and step three.
3.   Clip off the end of the wires that were in the drill as the shielding may be damaged.
4.   Line up your SMD and cut one of the wires so when you solder it, it lays flat and then strip a 1/16 inch or less off the end of the other wire,.
5.   Tin the wires and the SMD.
6.   Solder the wires to the LED (Remember which wire goes to the Anode and which to the Cathode).
7.   Your final product should look like this (https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2FLED-1.png&hash=12c5058cc2b899d3d749674cf07edfbfb3d33fa1) (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/l0rdnic0/LED-1.png)
8.   Repeat steps 1- 6 for as many LED’s as you’re going to use.

Because the triggers have a white plastic coating on them different then the PSP first you will need to drill into the triggers as outlined in Chaos’ LED document as shown here.
Note:  Make sure you drill using the correct angle. I have a vice, if you have access to one use it!

(https://www.acidmods.com/tutorials/images/step7.JPG) (https://www.acidmods.com/tutorials/images/step7.JPG) “As you can see, the place I drilled the holes is on the bottom of the button, at the bend, as it is marked here.”
(https://www.acidmods.com/tutorials/images/step8.JPG) (https://www.acidmods.com/tutorials/images/step8.JPG) ”Use a 3/16” drill bit for the right size.
Slide the LED’s into the holes on the shoulder buttons, and dab a drop of hot glue, into the hole, to seal the LED’s in. This also gives it some structural integrity”

Installing the Mother Board.

Just to make things clear. Right now your Amp has its power wire and the input wires soldered. The wire you soldered to the switch, the Cathode – from the Amp and the Anode + for the LEDS is not connected.

So let’s install the MB but run the non connected wires and the LED wires out from where the MS plugs in. You will want to make sure that the heat shield is in place correctly and that your Amp is under the heat shield when the MB is fully in place.

Now before connecting any wires to the MB (UMD Motor, Power, WiFi antenna etc) put the shoulder buttons in and route the wires as shown below. You will need to bend them so that they don’t interfere when you press the button down.

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2FLeftRoute-1.png&hash=c0f66b205c1d45481bf9df74727c02b074dfd833) (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/l0rdnic0/LeftRoute-1.png) Left Side Routed. (Note how the trigger wires are routed)
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2FRightRoute-1.png&hash=be2b5bfe7ffe4f9f67a5e82be7a10d78a6347856) (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/l0rdnic0/RightRoute-1.png) Right Side Routed. (Note how the trigger wires are routed. Blue should be below the post by the red.)

Finish and test.

With all the wires sticking out the Left side of the PSP where the MS goes, take all the Cathode – wires from your LED’s and the Cathode – wire from the switch, cut them so that you don’t have any excess wire and then solder them together.

Next take the Anode + wire from the Amp and then the Anode + wires from your leads and cut them so that there is no excess wire and then solder them.

Put your battery in the PSP and turn the WiFi switch to the off position (this turns the LED’s on). Then turn on the PSP and your LED’s should light up. If they don’t you did something wrong! Check your setup.

If you want to see them blinking but haven’t connected your screen then insert your memory card. Turn on the PSP and using the rubber piece from your /\ [] O X button do the following:

Tap the rubber thing on the right directional pad one time. Then tap the left directional pad three times. Then use the rubber thing to press the /\ button and then the X button. This should start playing a song… OH yeah, turn up your volume for more blinky blink. It helps to have a speaker connected so you can hear the beeps as you navigate the menu.

Clean UP.

(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2FClean.png&hash=94bd868c6b259b38a96b3a45cd41d480f408312d) (http://i57.photobucket.com/albums/g219/l0rdnic0/Clean.png) Tape up your exposed wires and stuff them in the opening under the MS slot. Note: try to keep this area clean and neat as the tabs on the MS cover slide into the area where your new wires are. It may take you a few tries but test it out before you put your PSP together so that you’re not disappointed.

Take out your MS if it’s still in the card reader and put your PSP back together and enjoy.

Special thanks to the following!!!

HI everyone here is what I can add I got all my parts from mouser.com execpt for the Amp...

638-192BHC-AN1P23T Blue Water Clear 0603 LEDs 0.68$ each. order at least 6, 10 is a nice number.

71-RN60D-F-191K 1/4watt 191Kohms 0.21$ I got 15 of them.

271-30K-RC 30Kohms 1% 0.90$ each I got 15 of them too.

All thats missing is the part number for the Amp IC (radio shack, 8 pin AMP IC). I'll get that number when I go to my office... :yess:

when i bridge the resistor for the powerpoint, does it cause too much voltage to go through my leds causing it to burst????becoz i already removed the resistor n does it mean i canot use the powerpoint from there anymore???

Edited . i add 20ohms resistor to limit the voltage to 3.2 volts.i duno the maximum voltage i can go for my led.

Those resistors at that power point are for the MS and WIFI LEDs. You soldering to the 5.x volt side of the resistor. If you have removed them then your supplying 5.X volts to those leds insted of 3.2

does it matter if my resisters are 5%? i have both of the right resisters its just 5% you guys have 1%. maybe that will solve my lm386 not working problem?

edit: nvm my 30kohm is 5% and my 191kohm is 1%

yeah I have it working external.. Where the lm386 is getting input from the headphone jack and making the lights blink.. I just haven't wired it to the headphone part of the board.. I just finished a 360 mod tonight so I'm back in the swing of things again..

Could you draw a diagram??Because i still don't understand it. The dead pin is not even connected to the ground, does it means it's a open circuit???  Then why would my battery still drains when it is an open circuit even though my psp is off(not standby)(totally off).

wait wait.. you're fine. the anode and cathode on the switch is "bridged" so its making the dead negative. that dude probably didn't see it. its fine.

I have got a quick question.

1) I connected my supply voltage from the memory stick which is the 5++ V powerpoint to my LM386 amp pin number 6.

2) Then i connected my ground from the Lm386 amp and my led cathode(-) to the dead pin from the switch.

3) I connected my led anode(+) to pin 5 from the LM386 amp.

Is there anything i done wrong??
Because i can't seem to find where the ground from the LM386 amp goes to in this tutorial.

Lastly, i am leaving my psp overnight now and see if my battery still drains tomorrow.

Edited: My battery still drains. I will take out the mod and see how it goes for 4 hrs with the  battery full charge.

i almost have everything but i still have a question or two. does the fact that when i search for the resistor that there is a couple differences like a 1/4 w versus a 1/8 w. and the 30k ohm resistors i have found dont look like the ones in the picture i still havent gone to the local radio shack but just was wondering if that was an issue or not

You should be fine with a 1/4 watt. Bad news though Radio Shack does not carry 30K or 191K. Your best bet is to order from mouser...

Hey, I'm new to this site...I have some things that I'm not compleatly clear of.

I Understand the building of the sound mod and the connecting of the resistors to the negative and positive contacts on the speakers. I also understand the connecting of the power source. And the soldering of the LED's

What I dont understand is:
1) You know how you connected the anode and cathode of the switch together right? Where does the wire from the dead (soldered to the switch) go?
2) Where does the anode and the cathode of each LED connect to?
3) Where does the ground wire(on the sound mod) go?

Because I'm planning on putting one LED in each of the L and R buttons and 2 in the back to light up the Jewel.

haha, sory for being so newb *sluggish grin*

hey ppl i made a mistake while doing the mod and i got siome problems here  will be glad if you help   :dntknw:

after  i  thought i was done i started the psp turned the wifi switch but the leds werent shining.
i started checking everything again and again but no luck so i removed the mod , made the psp in 1 piece again and started it. it is going fine but then i realised that the WIFI and the MEMORY STICK LEDS on the psp (  u know em next to the analog stick) ARE NOT WORKING NOW !!!

i think i overheated the place where i need to solder the 5v wire

can you give me a tip how to fix it ?
is there another place where i can solder the 5v wire now since this one isnt working now i think.

(From mouser.com since I found out that they ship world wide :D and I live in the netherlands) And how about the 30k-ohm resistor?
Can anyone tell me the details for both of the resistors?

Hello,
Yesterday I made the soundmod for my psp slim.
It all works perfect but..
Why does it also react to the noise that's coming from the speaker?
When I change the volume level to 0, the leds are on (not full strength),
when I set the speakers to mute, the leds are off.
When you listen very closely you can hear some noise coming from the speakers.
Am I the only one with this problem? Or did I do something wrong?
My modding/soldering skills are sufficient for this relatively simple mod.

you just have 2 look for any supply between 3-5v on the board, if you use 5 volts use 40 ohm resistor , 3v no need to put resistor, you can find the power points at the power switch , tnx

It is simple. I haven't done it to a slim but I've done it to other things. It's not that bad. If you're a noob at soldering/modding I couldn't recommend it as your first mod though.

yes, i personaly recommend doing that first. it gives you an idea as to how the psp is built and where other mods are placed. helpful info to know for the next time you mod the psp with something a little more demanding. make sure that you use very thin wire as the speakers will have to fit on top.

Supplies needed for the Sound Reactive LED Mod
30-gauge Kynar wire (best to have different colors)
2x 0603 LED’s
1x 191k-ohm Resistor
1x 30k-ohn Resistor
1x LM386 Audio Amplifier IC
Soldering Iron (nothing more then 15 Watt)
Solder (.015 size works best)
Flux
Drill
3/16 bit

could anybody tell me which onlineshop sell those items?? it would be better if someone could give the exact links (example LED link, Kynar Wire link, etc)

coz i'm still newbie to this mod/soldering stuff, so i cant decide which is 0603 LED and the difference with other LED

complete genius man luv  it, i got the sound chip from "the shop" and i did everything exactly as you have here. it works perfectly and i have one orange 0603 led on the contacts but it eventually burned out.i burned out the resistors to my wifi and memory stick indicator lights(sound chip still works) but im cool with that cause they ruin the flow im trying to make. i want to install 6 blue leds and 2 white ones. i would like to know what resistors i would need for the colors im using and whether its better to wire them in series or parallel. i tested a couple of white ones and the popped so i know i need them. id really like to finish this thing cause all my media is centered around music and my psp slim. any help would be greatly appreciated.  :help:

1) what is the importance of using two different color kynar wires?
2) which type of resistors do i get? copper or metal

uh I don't think it matters, just one is more expensive and

It's not really important to have different color kynar (I just used one color) but it just makes it easier for you to identify positive and negative.

A few questions cause your links are broken. What exactly do I NEED in this part?
(https://acidmods.com/forum/proxy.php?request=http%3A%2F%2Fi57.photobucket.com%2Falbums%2Fg219%2Fl0rdnic0%2Fchip-1.png&hash=a4eb834d1bfc9d91e693b1c2f8b470546e8be413)

I don't know how to do that.

Also what type of resistors do I need (how many ohms) and lastly, how you did your sound mod? the way Jumbo said to do it was just wire the + and - of the each LED for L and R was just solder the LEDs directly to the contact points of the speakers and that's it. Is that how you did your sound mod? since the links no longer work I'm really confused. Please help!!  :beg:

Really?

Come on, he says the value of the resistors.

Quote
1x 191k-ohm Resistor
1x 30k-ohm Resistor

Jumbo was talking about direct contact leds.

This way uses the IC.

And there are many diagrams drawn in this thread, such as the one by Wowzerz:

am i doing something wrong??

this is what i got.......

Dude, take the time to read, do some through searching, and Then ask questions.

btw wowzerz it looks fine to me.

so you only need it hook it up to 1 speaker for both L and R? also are the contacts on the IC labeled? (don't have it yet) cause it's really REALLY small..

and lastly can I hook up multiple LEDs to L and R? like 2 LEDs on L and 2 LEDs on R?

Yes.

If you wanted to hook up more than one led yes, but depending on what is wanted, there may be more.

As for the contacts, pin one will be labeled by a dot.

If you know where pin one is, you know where the others are:

ok, so I can have 2 sound LEDs in the triggers and 2 LEDs in the UMD door? do I solder 2 wires directly to each contact?

Yes to the First.

Yes to the second as well, but you can solder 1 wire to each contact (I'm assuming you mean the pins) and then connect as many wires as you want to those wires. Allows for a much cleaner mod.

so it would look like this? Oh BTW is my wiring correct? I wired them in parallel did I or didn't I? I'm not sure lol but I think I did.

So I did something right? :D

They are wired in parallel right? cause I don't want everything to die if 1 goes out. Oh and why is the start at the + mint colored then changes to dark red?

And the neon green goes to... what resistor? there are like 10 resistors on the PSP circuit boards.

Is this mod going to be VERY reactive? or only semi-reactive?

Well sorry, but it starts getting annoying when one has to state the same information twice. But no this won't be very reactive, only semi. I suggest transistor method or direct connect.

Ok, do you have a tut to the "tranistor one"? cause I have no idea what that is. Second, by Direct Contact you mean from the speaker contact points + and - to the LEDs? but can I turn them on and off still? is there a way to have active LEDs that you can turn on and off?

I didn't give you a bloody answer, cause I said to Search.

Yes direct contact are DIRECTly connected to the speakers.

And of course you can turn them on and off.

In order for you to do that, you need to use the search.

It's there for a freakin reason.

Need I say search any more?

Yeah, there's no way to turn them on and off if you use direct contact.

PSP Slim & Lite Disassembly Tutorial by T3KN1K4L (https://www.acidmods.com/Wiki/tiki-index.php?page=PSP%20Slim%20%26%20LIte%20Disassembly)

Clean UP.

Note: try to keep this area clean and neat as the tabs on the MS cover slide into the area where your new wires are. It may take you a few tries but test it out before you put your PSP together so that you’re not disappointed.

Take out your MS if it’s still in the card reader and put your PSP back together and enjoy.

Could this be used in an Old Xbox? Rigged up to one of the AV audio channels?

You can add resistors together. to get a 30K resistor you can just put 3 10K resistors together in series. 10K+10K+10K = 30K

Hi, I've read and been searching for the answer to this question, and I'm a bit new at this, and was seeing if anybody could assist me,-

With the same basic setup(resistors, amp, ect.) as this tutorial, how would I install another slider switch to turn on and off the led's, instead of using the wif-switch?

I know I can install one, but could somebody give me a relatively detailed explanation of how to do it?

Any help is appreciated, thank you.

There are certain sites where you can get smaller switch that you can install in UMD area or other areas that reachable. Off hand i do not have any URLs for sites that sell these switches but ill post once i relocate them.

long time since someone has posted but let's see if anyone's there.
what is the difference and hazards of doing the direct contact mod as opposed to the lm386 mod? and can I simply add a switch to the positive lead for the direct connect or does it have to be wired into the board?
Positive > Switch> led? or does the switch need to be grounded
I have everything to do the LM386 mod except the resistors but I can order them, maybe I am just impatient  :dntknw:
I've searched but every reference to it tells you to search  :boxed:
I know this topic is old, a lot of the pictures are old and taken down or missing.

I used a tip31 its was more reactive compared to the Lm386 mod and it does not glow when the music not going it and you can hook it up the same way as the Lm386 mod you should look into
