Works on: Wireless / wired / cheepys
Parts List

1k Res: 271-1321
22k Res: 271-1339
555cn Timer: 276-1723
.01uf Cap: 272-1065
10k Pot: 271-282

Ok after not being able to sleep and talking to mike on the phone he found a way to do the sleeper for my 555 chip.
1. take the rapid out put (pin 3 on my chip)
2. add a 1k res to it
3. wire the other end of the 1k res to the base (pin 2 of the npn) on the npn tans (middle pin) Any npn will work i used the asorted pack part nuber # 276-1617
4. pin 1 of the npn trans will go to the buttom pin of the trigger
5. pin 3 of the npn trans will go to the middle pin trigger.

sorry for the lame pin out ill will redo the tut with the new video of the sleeper working tomm. as it is 3:00am here and im half a sleep.

Thansk mike  :whoosh:
i will edit this post with the videos. and sleeper pinout after mike and i get done hope today or tomm.  hope this is a lil easyer to follow for yall.

so the pot will adjustthe resistance, thus changing the fire rate? will this make your method work in halo 3?

ive got another question..sorry for being such a pain, but youve got the 22k resistor and the pot wired in parallel. the current is going to take the fastest path from neg to pos, if the pot is lower then the 22k the electrons will take the pot, if the pot is higher then 22k then the electrons are going to flow through the resistor. basically your making the resistance between pin 6 and 7 22k or lower. just something i noticed and am very curious about

hey guys, i need some help on this mod.  when i use a battery it doesnt work right and i cant click my right stick.  however, if i use my play and charge cable it works fine. what could be my problem? im thinking im not grounding in the right spot.

also to double check, does the timer go from 1 to 8 from the front or the back.

and finally which diagram should i follow since they are different.

here is a picture of how i have the pos and neg wires.

Well... look at the chip with the pins down. See the little dot? That's pin 1 right next to it. On that side it would be pin 1(by the dot) then 2,3,4 going down. Then on the right side it would go from the bottom up 5,6,7,8. Hope that helps.

Follow the one mike posted. They are the same thing except one is more confusing.
You may have something wired wrong if your right stick isn't working, check the connections and make sure you ground it to the pin that's in mikes pics for his mods in the tut section.

Greetings all... First of hats off to SillyNuts for the design and to KingMike for polishing up the schematic.  this may be a silly quesiton, but on Mike's schematic i do not see the POT included, should this still be wired in between pins 6 and 7?  Also should the power for pin 8 and ground for pin 1 be drawin from the points shown on the tutorial posted by KingMike located at: https://www.acidmods.com/forum/index.php?topic=21452.0 ?  I've put this together twice now and am still battling with getting it to function.  I think everything is correct based on what I see in the schematics above.  I am using the old Matrix board wireless controler, and have attached accordingly to the "powersaver mode" point shown in the afore mentioned tut.  Could anyone who has this mod working maybe post a close up photo of their connection points and pinout of the 555?

so the transistor gives it the sleeper quality? i find that kind of hard to believe seeing as its a NPN transistor and all it does is make connection between the two pins when positive voltage is supplied to the middle pin. further explanation please

Ok, well i just gave this my third try... and still nothing... I wll say I'm no stranger to building components like this for several different applications, so I am pretty sure that i'm not suffering an ID10T error  hehe.  Here's what I've done so far...

attempt 1:  installed inside my controller

installed pot in handle so i could adust from outside, installed hidden switch so I could cut power to the 555 chip if i wanted to, wired up 555 according to diagram, and added the pot between pins 6&7 reassembled my controller and nothing... just normal opeation  btw on this rig i did NOT install the NPN Transistor just took pin 3 direct to ceter pin on right trigger as in original diagram.

attempt 2:

started with all fresh hardware (including a different matrix controller), built out another assembly on a cut down IC board from radio shack soldered long wires onto power, ground center right trigger pin and bottom right trigger pin, reassembled the controller and connected the power, ground center pin adn bottom pins accordingly, nada same as in first try...  in this attempt i tried both with and without the NPN Transistor

attempt 3:

again started with all fresh hardware, except controller, used same controller as in attempt 2 since i already have the 4 appropriate internal connections (properly identified i might add).  Now this time i used a project board to ensure no problems with the assembly of the chip with cap resistors, jumpers, etc. again nada... just normal controler operation.  again on this attempt i tried both with and without the NPN Transistor

I'm about out of ideas... i know i can follow a schematic and i know i can solder...  :help: please... thanks :)

island hopper, I am unsure why you are having trouble, i made this board with no problems, and this was the first board I ever made. I have made three of these now using different components and they all work.  the only thing that changes is the rate of fire, but they all rapid fire. I have done it multiple times using lager caps trying to eliminate the inconsistencies. this 555 chip drains power from the caps so fast I was not happy with it, but it does work the first time you use it, and every time just in short busts.

use mike's diagram, the best fire rate I got was without the pot at all. if you wire it per king mikes diagram make sure to put in the switching npn transistor as mike illustrates

pin #3 to base of npn, collector to middle trigger pin, emitter to bottom trigger pin
I used the mic's power source for vdd
and the battery ground for the chips ground

works every time on the new cg controllers, I have not tested it on the old controllers, I just used the push button and two wire method for them.

Just for the record, both types of 555 chips (low power or not) create “rapid fire”, but the low power chip in this configuration fires very slow more like auto fire. need to use the normal 555 chip to work the best, in this configuration. Better yet, buy mikes chip LOL

Yeah i'm about to just buy Mike's chip... Like i say i have a fair amount of experience with low voltage compoents so i'm not getting it... but such is life... I may go buy a new controller and try it on a cg controller just to see as its about the only variable i have not accounted for.  The reason I am liking this mod is being to vary the fire rate... I am an avid HALO player so i want to be able to dial the rapid fire to coincide with the fastest that halo will accept the input which i know is not much faster if any over the rate you acheive without mod but the increased accuracy is key... perhaps i should go with one of the multi mode pic mods... i just dont' want to let this one beat me though ;)

island, I only did this on a new cg controller. I am not 100% positive, but I think you would need a different setup for the old controllers.

OK, being the dilligent tester that I am... I went and got a CG controller to try the mod with, and what do you know... using one of the assemblies I had arelady put together and tested on 2 different matrix controllers it worked first time.  :faint:    Therefore, I must conclude that this mod does not work with the matrix controllers and only works with the CG controllers.  Anyone got any ideas as to why this rig is not cross compatible? I'm also now wondering if the NPN transistor used here to make this a sleeper configuration can be combined with an on/off switch and the 2 wire matrix rapid fire method... thereby acheiving a 'sleeper' rapidfire... hmmm.

output from 555 (pin 3) goes to a spst switch then to the npn to turn this mod on and off.  also for the low power chip. change the cap between 1&2 to a 1uf and add a 0.1uf cap between 5&1 this will make for a much more reliable circut. also if you want an adjustable rate of fire put a pot along with the 22k resistor between 2 & 7.  this is a change to allow use of the low power 555 chip and is much more consistant than the high power chip. new schematic comming this weekend

this is not compatable with both becouse the old controlers require a low input (ground) and the new ones require a high (vdd) if you play with terminating the transistor diferently it may work, but I have not tried. the matrix contolers are obsolete.

that would make sense... I may tinker and see if i can make a different schematic that will work for the application... there are a lot of matrix controllers out there and I happen to have 3 so... instead of getting newer ones i am going to try and rework this :)  Yeah i know i could just go and buy a pic or use a different method but i like to make things work...  will post my results if i make it work.

I know, I know--Virtual Display Device!! yep thats it. I am positive solder this RED wire to the Virtual Display Device, inside your controller and there you have it, a perfectly working sleeper with the 555 chip.

no but seriously, chives I have got nowhere with controling this chip from the sinc button. I had to put it down for a while, it was starting to consume all my free time. I am looking for a D latch, or a flip flop from my local radio shack and not having any luck. I am not sure it will work anyway. as soon as sinc is released the voltage returns inidiatly, I plan on testing a few things out this weekend, but I am starting to think this con only be done with programing or some special order parts. I have just about as much  :censored: on my work bench as radio shack, and no luck

Man, still battling with the momentary button Latching circuit.  Can't believe Rat Shack doesn't have JK flip flops, that place is not what it used to be.  Congrats on getting 555 RF to work on the trigger tho, that is pretty good accomplishment in itself.  Did you get a chance to look at the Op amp stuff I sent you last time? Rat Shack must have op amps, I think that will be your best bet for tools to do this job, that are available locally.  Even still it is going to be tricky to deal with the bounce on sync button.

Did I mention how easy it would be to use a pic? LOL just for the latching circuit makes it kindof redundent considering a pic can do the whole thing at once.

Keep on keepin on, I am sure you will figure it out

Ok 555 Timer Is now Works on Trigger and no external switch needed  Works & Tested Last night
Now all we have to do add a On/off Switch to enable 555 Time and wire up to sync and you got your self
a sleeper rapid fire Kit Like Ours but from radio shack parts.

i have done this mod before and it seems to me that when ever your batteries start to die the mod slows down    will this happen on this and i have read some other tutorials and they say to use the .1 compacitor instead of the .01 compacitor  which one works better, also what type of transistor do u use?      THANKS

yea idk if it was mentioned in this thread but it doesnt matter wats volts it is on the controller to use this right. Works with 5v for the wired controller and 3v for wireless.
