for matrix, you will have to use the battery supply to get that much FV..you will need a diff resistor on each diff led. google led resistance calc..and you will need to put a on/off switch on the controller some where.

You can always just use white LED's for the buttons and it looks the same. You dont need to match the colors it barely makes any difference.

After a fair bit of playing around with different LEDs I'd have to agree with Jumbo that white is better, they look consistent.
I saw recently using SMD LEDs for the buttons looks pretty good and only requires removing a small amount of the white plastic in the button. You do of course have to prewire an SMD to a length of wire but PSP modders seem to have no trouble with that!
Personally I thought that 4 x 3mm LEDs made for a better dome light.
Using all white, which are usually a max of 3.4V or so, you won't really need resistors. As you won't get more than 3V off of the batteries.

yea, but I have ruined a many smd leds like that. lol.. I think a through mount 0603 led bight be better. I am ordering some this weekend, and saving my smd leds for applicatins that acctually need a surface mounted device

I did it with white SMD's and it looked alright in the dark fully charged - but not as good during the day. and I didn't remove any white plastic, just slide them in..

The only thing is they stayed on constantly, as I just wired them to the main power points in the center of the controller..

Ben I seen that you wrote you didnt remove any white plastic....  I just want to make sure I understand right. You did not have to drill out the 4 white plastic sticks inside the buttons? I have tried lighting without taking them out and have had no luck!! Props!!!! I have also used SMD 0603 LEDs as well and I think the buttons are a bit more colorful rather than bright. Anyways great job!!!

Yer, I just wired the LEDs up and put a dab of hot glue on them to strengthen them, and slide them inside the button and trimmed part of the rim of the button to lead the wires out, and it worked out quite nicely - shame they aren't too bright.

I think they look pretty good. I wonder if a PLCC-2 LED would be ok, they're a higher spec but bigger. I may have to head to the shed to test it out this afternoon.

they look like theyre analog sticks, that were chewed by a dog, then stuck on top of the original joysticks. this controller definitely has A LOT going on

almost as comfortable as putting sewing needles in them and gouging them into your fingers. That way the "my finger slipped off the joystick" excuse is no longer.
